how do you figure? If it was a tax credit I'd agree. This is a tax cut right? That means they are deducting the money from the taxes you have paid in. Then again, I'm not really sure how it's being doled out either seems a lot more like a credit. They usually do try and fudge the language around these types of vote buying programs especially when thier name is attached to the Republican party.

Everyone pretty much agrees that this is a ridiculous idea. I'd rather he spend 800 dollars to 1600 dollars less for every man woman and child. That'd be more effective. Hell put all mine on the deficit. This is a consumer confidence ploy. I'm hoping people pay down thier debt. He's hoping that too I guess but I don't see that happening either.

If anyone tears theirs up, all it does is cost the govt more $$ to send you a notice that the check has not been cashed. Even though I think the $$ should be used to pay-down the national debt, if they choose to give it to the taxpayers, then I feel that we should spend the money, as opposed to the govt allocating it to some program that is inefficient and ineffective.

If you are truly against the rebates, why not donate the money to a charity, or a group that voices your specific political beliefs?

That's not the proper anti-Bush mentality. The proper way to think is that all money belongs to the Government. The working citizens are nothing more than individual entitlement program recipients and the part of our salary that the Government is nice enough to pay to us is all just a bonus.

I don't know about you, but that package for the people, single and/or married really doesn't even qualify as a bonus, except for the fact that it is a one-time deal.

That, specifically, is not the only bonus. The Government is kind enough to allow me to take home a portion of their money each month as well. Some may call this my salary. I have learned from here though that it is not truly a salary. It is a bonus allowed to me by the Government.

and what do you call Government bailouts of failing corporations? Everyone should spend their rebates as they see fit, but don't act like it is bonus. To me, this is

-money overdue the people as they watched, unable to do anything as corporations, and warmonger defense contractors wasted the "people's" money with NO consequences to their businesses.

-money overdue, as people watched 1/2 million and million dollar bonuses awarded to departing CEOs of failing companies that left thousands of people without jobs or retirement packages.

He could have kept those one time rebates and given the people something they really needed to help turn this economy around.

    January through March

-all utility bills up to 50% of the total will be tax deductible over a certain amount.

-all mortgage and rents up to 50% of the total will be tax deductible over a certain amount.

-all gas purchases up to 50% of the total over a certain amount.

Actually if you think about it, most of us will be getting more than our fair share of the money. Because essentially we paid this money proportionally to our income and we are getting it back as a fixed amount. So a guy who made $2Mil last year paid a bunch more taxes than the guy who earned $30,000, but both will be getting the same amount back. This is really a redistribution of wealth to the less wealthy.

Which by the way makes sense, since $800 won't change how a rich person spends their money, but it definitely will affect how a poor person will.

part of the reason i posed this question in the first place ... i think it is a waste of good money.

btw, are we going to be taxed on this money?

Well it's not a waste in the sense that now this money will get spent. Had the money remained in the hands of the rich, it would not have been spent, or at least not as much.

And so more people spending money is what is going to help spur the economy.

You will be taxed with sales tax when you spend it, but I don't know if they will tax it as income (or even worse as a bonus!).

I guess sarcasm really doesn't work on the internet.

It is not a bonus. It is a refund of our money. Much like that money that some people get back when they file their taxes. That is what you overpaid. They are kind enough to give it back to you without interest. Now, if you hand your money over to them a day late, you get penalties AND interest.

What it comes down to is it is better to at least give the people some of their money back rather than throw it into another bureaucratic black hole.

I agree with all of those ideas there. In fact, I would like to see all of those become 100% deductible. Hell, I think people should keep as much of their hard earned money as they possibly can rather than having five months' salary go directly to a bloated bureaucracy.

What I have seen around this board over the years though is that tax cuts, credits, deductions, rebates, etc...do not put more of a person's OWN money in their pockets. Instead, these are all seen as a government expense and a waste of "government" money.

the proposed rebate is similar to taking a cash advance on your credit card...its money in your pocket now, but you have to pay it back later!

I wonder what govt programs they will cut in order to fund the rebate? Most govt programs help low income individuals, so in the long run, they will suffer, while the higher income people who use less govt services are the ones who truly benefit.

Everyone should take their rebates and buy gold and silver... dead serious here. I am now putting 20% of my income into silver every month.
