I posted this in another thread and found it worthy of its own thread.
Here is the difference (by example) between northern racists and southern racists:
Southern racist: "Youns a damn n#%*&$!!!!!! I'll take ye out Buckhannon way and learn ye!"
Northern racist: "Oh, there is a black guy over there! Lock the door!" (sipping a latte', in her Jetta speeding back to the 'burbs after attending a fundraiser for school lunches for young black students in the inner city)

You more or less got it. Southerners are more open with their attitudes.
Apparently there are lots of Scottish in the South.
you forgot east coast vs west coast racism...

There was/is a West coast vs east coast rappers feud going on where two big name rappers (Tupac and Biggie) were murdered. Just a dumb reference on my part !
totally cool in that respect...
however, racism/segragationist/controll freaks, hell they walk in all lifes and in all social scenes...it's when we attach ourselves to one group and follow that group, is when all the shit happens...(shit--meaning doubt, becasuse we become fixed in our reception)....
i always think of the more narrow minded as those who have allowed their thinking to become fossilized...
this is why i like that blade of grass theory i always am referrring to....
and if we think about nature a bit....not all species are co-existant in any one particular habitat...
the best way to curb all this, is to find true peace and to monitor as well as, develop one's own heart of heart...peace....
you are an enlightening servant..

couldn't put humpty dumpty together again
only humpty can do that work.....even though it takes a village to help ol hump.....;)

Maybe it's because you're white.
I grew up in a neighborhood that was equally mixed. and now I live downtown chicago which has almost ever race you can think of. and like I said, I rarely see signs of racism. or hear about it.
Being white means you can't notice any racism?

hahahaha.
yep, that's about right.
Where I'm not ugly and you're lookin' at me
Not in the way that people experience it, no. Most racism is quite subtle. It may often manifest itself in just a look, or a passing comment. I don't think that Western whitey - excluding the Jews - really understands what it's like to be on the receiving end of racism.
Maybe Jlew's right, and there isn't any racism in Chicago - or at least, very little of it. But until I hear that corroborated by a black Chicagoan{sic?}, then I'll take it with a pinch of salt.
hahahahahahaha! Great term!
you just created your own racists term. well done
Of course there are others who try so hard to find it that they imagine they see it everywhere.
My ex once went to Alabama. He came back shocked describing a sign that read "Niggers be out by dark."
Very sad.

Perhaps being white makes you less likely to be a victim.
Really? I've never met one of these people myself. Or it could be that you're simply talking bollocks.
I'm not asking if you've met anyone like that, I'm only suggesting that they exist.
If you haven't heard of Al Sharpton then you have no business talking about racism in America. He perfectly embodies what I've described.
I've heard of him. I haven't heard him though. So perhaps you're right. I was under the impression you were referring to certain white's looking for racism where it doesn't exist.

What  - you mean like now, as in the 2000's?!?!
R.i.p. My Dad - May 28, 2007
R.i.p. Black Tail (cat) - Sept. 20, 2008
Late 90's, but same diff, yes?
I work with a black man who goes to Tennessee every year for a church retreat. He says he knows how to put on his "Yes, Mam - Yes, Sir" persona for when he goes there. I would say my impression is that people (stereotypical old style folks who have been there forever) are not as chummy with people of color as someone might experience further to the north.
For me that sign is hard, because I'm like, "Why don't people speak up and DO something!" It's just not right to have a sign like that this day in age. I guess the gun laws may be more liberal down that way. J/K - I think there is an established way of thinking and the progress of eroding it away is SLOW.
It's not just the whites practicing racism, though. I've heard racist remarks from all groups. One of the benefits of working in a culturally diverse environment.
I miss when I was a kid and I was the minority at an elementary school, but I was to young to notice and nobody else seem to care either. Cheers to whatever that school was in San Bernadino 1983/1984.

perhaps true. but i must say, i'm not a minority, but speaking as someone who likes to not get the shit kicked out of him, northern racism sounds a bit more bearable to me. at least they're trying.
