i'd never heard a racial slur of any kind until i moved to florida (small town in north florida...outside of gainesville...a large church-going community). people use the n-word all the time there like it's not a big deal...with such hatred behind it. whenever i confront someone about the use of the word, they always come back w/ "it can be used for any ignorant person...that is the definition." i have yet to hear anyone reference an ignorant white person as such. it sickens me...it is not something that i grew up around and i don't feel that it should be tolerated. to hear my sister using this word is mind boggling....she says it knowing that it greatly offends my mom, who was called this growing up (her and her sisters were the only hispanics in their town)and it was very hurtful to her. crazy how one can be brainwashed by their environment. needless to say...i got the hell out of that town when i was 17...haven't been back except to visit my family. i hate that place.

i've had to deal w/ racial comments from people about hispanics. they'll make comments around me, expecting that i won't say anything...cause i'm "white". the look on their faces when i tell them that i'm mexican...
yes...i do feel like a human. i do not feel like a tree.

Here in WA state we have a guy with a big billboard type sign on his own private property that just happens to have a view of I-5. That dude writes all sorts of kooky shit on that board.

Maybe this sign in Alabama was the same type of thing. Being on private property doesn't detract from the sentiment. Sadly, the "Good Ole Boys" are still around.

Not saying that their not around anymore....just fewer and most folks ignore them....because most of them are just chicken-shit, wanna-be bullies.

funny thread as I just ran into this recently with my mother of all people...

I'm a Chicagoland native and since living down South for more than 10 years my parents somehow think that any time I refer to someone in a story as a "black guy" I'm only pointing out their color because I'm a southerner now. Not that they say that, but I know them well enough to know their reactions.

So I'm the phone with mom the other day and she's talking about buying a new house. Now the house they live in is perfect for them, small retirement community, no yard work, good sized place that's paid for. Her reasoning for wanting to move?

"Well Ebizzie, the townhomes (these are very nice, privately owned townhomes) behind our property have had black people moving in. And it's not that I'M prejudice but, ya know, a lot of people looking to buy a house ARE prejudice. So, you're dad and I think this may be the best time to move before it gets too bad."

What? And I'm the racist? We have a Nigerian couple living across the street from us down here in ATL. The wife and I have never considered moving because there are, gulp, black people living in the neighborhood. It's like someone earlier said, racist folks in the south just aren't shy about it.

perhaps true. but i must say, i'm not a minority, but speaking as someone who likes to not get the shit kicked out of him, northern racism sounds a bit more bearable to me. at least they're trying.

trying is not a good word in here, they don't wont their asses to be kicked by blacks and whites that's why they're silent.

there is also another group of racists.

individuals that hate anyone becuase of their colour and because they're different

and individuals that hate because they have a reason/generalised view of particular culture.

There was/is a West coast vs east coast rappers feud going on where two big name rappers (Tupac and Biggie) were murdered. Just a dumb reference on my part !
The irony is that Tupac was from Harlem.

I'm not sure if that can really be considered racism though. West and East was more about just having something to fight about.

I have read before where studies were done and showed that blacks and whites actually interacted more in the South. Just curious of peoples opinions on this.

I don't know if it's true or not.

Can't say I have those feelings, though.

I've lived in the south and the north, and I'd say that's not really true. The interaction is about the same from what I've seen.

The racism is the same too, so I disagree with the original post. Southern people are more vocal/clear about their racism, but only when they're in their own respective groups. When they're in a situation where the races are mixed, they don't say much unless they're really drunk or something.

The westside of Chicago? Where you can stand at one corner and watch two sides of the street at Central Ave.... where yuppies do their Frank Lloyd Wright home tour then look to the otherside to the most filthiest most horrid ghetto crack house tour? A blantant division of segregation?

Having experienced both, I would agree with this statement.

Here in Atlanta I work with probably more minorities than I do caucasians. I go out to our home office in Denver, same jobs different locale, and there are like nothing but white people. I go home to Chicago and the malls are packed with white folks but down here it's a mixed bunch. Population numbers alone dictate that in the south you must interact with blacks more often. Up north everyone is segregated in a sense by neighborhoods. Not too much so down south.

In my community, which boasts a population of 56,000 for an entire county, I have noticed that their is division between people of color and latinos....that latinos, native americans, and mid easterners cohabitate seemingly well, but cauci's seem to either mesh with cauci's and all the other blends or stand in a posture of fear...

and if anything white people (majority) are either offering open hearts of support or wallow in even a hostile and combative manifestation of prejudice...

the people who are uneducated and motivationally or becasue of their lack of worldly experiences (too poor to leave the area, let alone the city) challenged seem to have the biggest of issues...

being in an economically depressed area reveals a lot...

i do not think being poor, rich, black, white, brown, yellow or red, has anything to do with showing eachother common courtesy...which is what we need to put peace back on the table...in our Homes..

I read somewhere, that when you are walking down a street and you encounter another human, try to make eye contact and give acknowledgement for the gift of another life. Say hello, or if you are shy, atleast offer a nod....when doing this you are praising the LIVING...

Making this a practice opens up a door for gratitude and humility; which can only be recycled for individual betterment....

Only the narrow minded idiots are racists.
you can't say all Southerners are like that.
I lived in the Southern(Alabama/N.C.) and Northeast,
there are racists idiots on both sides.
though maybe more in the South.

You are so correct.... racism is racism no matter whom is the offender...

You are actually correct with this assessment. We briefly discussed this in my lit class when talking about the Harlem renaissance and that the writers of that time noted that the north was every bit as racist as the south, only southerners were more upfront about it.

Hmmm...just throwing a couple things out there. First of all...how does one quantify racism? Secondly, would being more vocal equate into actually being a more fervent racist?

Also, The North being every bit as racist does that mean that there are the same percentage of racist living in both places?

The difference between Northern and Southern racists is wolves and foxes, really, with northerners being the foxes and southerners the wolves. With a wolf, at least you know where you stand. Foxes on the other hand will trick you into thinking they aren't going to eat you and before you know it, they gobble you up and spit out the bones.

I've seen racism in the form of employment discrimination where I work practiced by all of the rainbow. Some people get hired, some people don't, some people get overtime despite spending the whole week on the internet or just 'looking' busy, other people don't. And, I live in Seattle.

My ex once went to Alabama. He came back shocked describing a sign that read "Niggers be out by dark."

    Very sad.

Being from Alabama, that is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. I have never seen anything like that. People that have not been to a place shouldn't make generalizations about said place. I've been to your state. It wasn't that much different.

Actually now that I remember the Gorge weekend, a girl from Seattle asked me where I was from and replied, "eww aren't there a lot of black people there?"

You should hear the ridiculous questions we ask the Canadians! ;)

Anyway, that sign was seen and it made a HUGE impression on some people from the north who were there on business. I've already explained this in a post further back in the thread. However, being as it was seen by passers-by, I do not know how long the sign was posted or if something like that would cause an uproar amongst its community. I don't know the area.

Which brings me to a post I'm borrowing from another thread:http://forums.pearljam.com/showthread.php?t=272791
I hangout in greenville almost every weekend, grew up and still live 30 mins away...neither of these two posts accurately describe the city. That being said, there are people like the ones described who live there but I'm sure you're both aware that this kind of mentality exists everywhere else, too. Hate, though on its decline, imo, still is alive and well all over this country and planet, for that matter. Personally, I view people that assume the south is filled to the brim with nothing but gomer pyles, inbred rednecks and sheet-wearing assholes to be just as ignorant, stereotypical and misinformed as the racists they show such disdain towards.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I know of some so-called open minded people who refuse to go to the South, because of their impression of its population as a whole. They actually fear going there.

Watched 'Deliverance' a few too many times I suppose.

However, the South is used as THE example of America's racist past. At least it was for me. It was always the video of some southern state with segregated everything. That's something those states might want to work to improve.

What about Japanese internment camps? They certainly were not exclusive to the south. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_American_internment

What about institutionalized racism such as mortgage red lines. Where people in certain neighborhoods that were known as minority neighborhoods were basically barred from obtaining mortgages and therefore left out of the wealth that can be created and carried on by homeownership. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redlining
