Perhaps being white makes you less likely to be a victim.0 -
Byrnzie wrote:Really? I've never met one of these people myself. Or it could be that you're simply talking bollocks.
I'm not asking if you've met anyone like that, I'm only suggesting that they exist.
If you haven't heard of Al Sharpton then you have no business talking about racism in America. He perfectly embodies what I've described."I'll use the magic word - let's just shut the fuck up, please." EV, 04/13/080 -

I've heard of him. I haven't heard him though. So perhaps you're right. I was under the impression you were referring to certain white's looking for racism where it doesn't exist.0 -
Byrnzie wrote:Not in the way that people experience it, no. Most racism is quite subtle. It may often manifest itself in just a look, or a passing comment. I don't think that Western whitey - excluding the Jews - really understands what it's like to be on the receiving end of racism.
Maybe Jlew's right, and there isn't any racism in Chicago - or at least, very little of it. But until I hear that corroborated by a black Chicagoan{sic?}, then I'll take it with a pinch of salt.all insanity:

Very sad.
What  - you mean like now, as in the 2000's?!?!R.i.p. Rigoberto Alpizar.
R.i.p. My Dad - May 28, 2007
R.i.p. Black Tail (cat) - Sept. 20, 20080 -

Late 90's, but same diff, yes?
I work with a black man who goes to Tennessee every year for a church retreat. He says he knows how to put on his "Yes, Mam - Yes, Sir" persona for when he goes there. I would say my impression is that people (stereotypical old style folks who have been there forever) are not as chummy with people of color as someone might experience further to the north.
For me that sign is hard, because I'm like, "Why don't people speak up and DO something!" It's just not right to have a sign like that this day in age. I guess the gun laws may be more liberal down that way. J/K - I think there is an established way of thinking and the progress of eroding it away is SLOW.
It's not just the whites practicing racism, though. I've heard racist remarks from all groups. One of the benefits of working in a culturally diverse environment.
I miss when I was a kid and I was the minority at an elementary school, but I was to young to notice and nobody else seem to care either. Cheers to whatever that school was in San Bernadino 1983/1984.Walking can be a real trip

I wouldn't be surprised if somewhere in AmeriKKKa, there is a sign stating such...
off topic, but i do know places where signs say,"we reserve the right to refuse service to law enforcement...."

Here is the difference (by example) between northern racists and southern racists:
Southern racist: "Youns a damn n#%*&$!!!!!! I'll take ye out Buckhannon way and learn ye!"
Northern racist: "Oh, there is a black guy over there! Lock the door!" (sipping a latte', in her Jetta speeding back to the 'burbs after attending a fundraiser for school lunches for young black students in the inner city)
perhaps true. but i must say, i'm not a minority, but speaking as someone who likes to not get the shit kicked out of him, northern racism sounds a bit more bearable to me. at least they're trying.0 -
i'd never heard a racial slur of any kind until i moved to florida (small town in north florida...outside of gainesville...a large church-going community). people use the n-word all the time there like it's not a big deal...with such hatred behind it. whenever i confront someone about the use of the word, they always come back w/ "it can be used for any ignorant person...that is the definition." i have yet to hear anyone reference an ignorant white person as such. it sickens me...it is not something that i grew up around and i don't feel that it should be tolerated. to hear my sister using this word is mind boggling....she says it knowing that it greatly offends my mom, who was called this growing up (her and her sisters were the only hispanics in their town)and it was very hurtful to her. crazy how one can be brainwashed by their environment. needless to say...i got the hell out of that town when i was 17...haven't been back except to visit my family. i hate that place.
i've had to deal w/ racial comments from people about hispanics. they'll make comments around me, expecting that i won't say anything...cause i'm "white". the look on their faces when i tell them that i'm mexican...yes...i do feel like a human. i do not feel like a tree.0 -

My ex was an asshole, but he wasn't a liar. It was outside of Huntsville near the Tennessee border. He was on a business trip, not a leisurely photo-op vacation trip.
Here in WA state we have a guy with a big billboard type sign on his own private property that just happens to have a view of I-5. That dude writes all sorts of kooky shit on that board.
Maybe this sign in Alabama was the same type of thing. Being on private property doesn't detract from the sentiment. Sadly, the "Good Ole Boys" are still around.Walking can be a real trip

funny thread as I just ran into this recently with my mother of all people...
I'm a Chicagoland native and since living down South for more than 10 years my parents somehow think that any time I refer to someone in a story as a "black guy" I'm only pointing out their color because I'm a southerner now. Not that they say that, but I know them well enough to know their reactions.
So I'm the phone with mom the other day and she's talking about buying a new house. Now the house they live in is perfect for them, small retirement community, no yard work, good sized place that's paid for. Her reasoning for wanting to move?
"Well Ebizzie, the townhomes (these are very nice, privately owned townhomes) behind our property have had black people moving in. And it's not that I'M prejudice but, ya know, a lot of people looking to buy a house ARE prejudice. So, you're dad and I think this may be the best time to move before it gets too bad."
What? And I'm the racist? We have a Nigerian couple living across the street from us down here in ATL. The wife and I have never considered moving because there are, gulp, black people living in the neighborhood. It's like someone earlier said, racist folks in the south just aren't shy about it."Worse than traitors in arms are the men who pretend loyalty to the flag, feast and fatten on the misfortunes of the nation while patriotic blood is crimsoning the plains." -- Abraham Lincoln0 -

trying is not a good word in here, they don't wont their asses to be kicked by blacks and whites that's why they're silent.0 -
there is also another group of racists.
individuals that hate anyone becuase of their colour and because they're different
and individuals that hate because they have a reason/generalised view of particular culture.0 -
flywallyfly wrote:There was/is a West coast vs east coast rappers feud going on where two big name rappers (Tupac and Biggie) were murdered. Just a dumb reference on my part !
I'm not sure if that can really be considered racism though. West and East was more about just having something to fight about."I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"0 -
I have read before where studies were done and showed that blacks and whites actually interacted more in the South. Just curious of peoples opinions on this.Seeing visions of falling up somehow.

The racism is the same too, so I disagree with the original post. Southern people are more vocal/clear about their racism, but only when they're in their own respective groups. When they're in a situation where the races are mixed, they don't say much unless they're really drunk or something.0
