the purpose of a mat is to one keep the glass of of the art, second to open the art up and accent the print in some way. This image uses a lot of negative white space. With that being said I also don’t like colored mats at all for the top mat, looks cheap (unless we are talking alpharag mats). The red Pearl Jam is the part I wanted to pop so I used the dark green and yellow lines to continue the design in the art and the white mat gives the art more space to "breathe". Another reason I use white is if I cant mat right to the image and it bleeds out of the "square" like this one. If I put just color around it, it would looked crammed in the frame... AND one last reason I used the white on this is because it is a 6ply mat… I like the depth the bevel creates on thick and ultra thick mats AND they don’t come in colors either.

what colors would you use on a DC?

Without seeing it in person (YET!) I would go with a black mat on top for sure, 6 or 8ply if you can... then if there is a red that goes with it well that would probably be it for the bottom mat... might try and match the grey of the B2s in the background and put that in between the black and grey. This is such a cool print I would probably do a fabric wrap for the red mat. The frame selection is really going to make this frame job I think...

I used a black frame, and double-matted it with white and red.
Black matte would not be good since the poster is already mostly black. Best to use white to bring out the colors of the poster more.

I don’t have a picture right now, there are two kinds of fabric mats though, "fake" fabric where it’s just a texture on a white core mat, like the Bainbridge suede or linens (I don’t mean fake in a bad way, there is a couple Bainbridge suedes that might go perfect with this poster). A fabric wrap is where you take actual fabric and the mat is wrapped with it. You get two benefits with this, usually a much richer color than a paper mat and the texture of the fabric can be a nice touch. But sometimes the texture is too much though. Any quality framer will be able to wrap a mat with any fabric you can buy at a fabric store. From expensive silk to cheap cotton...
