MINNEAPOLIS — Sen. Larry Craig of Idaho pleaded guilty this month to misdemeanor disorderly conduct after being arrested at the Minneapolis airport.
Roll Call, a Capitol Hill newspaper that first reported the case, said on its website Monday that Craig was arrested June 11 by a plainclothes officer investigating complaints of lewd conduct in a men's restroom at the airport.
A Hennepin County court docket showed Craig pleading guilty to the disorderly conduct charge Aug. 8, with the court dismissing a charge of gross misdemeanor interference to privacy. The court docket said the Republican senator paid $575 in fines and fees. He was put on unsupervised probation for a year. A sentence of 10 days in the county workhouse was stayed.
In a statement issued by his office, Craig said that he was not involved in any inappropriate conduct.
"At the time of this incident, I complained to the police that they were misconstruing my actions," he said. "I should have had the advice of counsel in resolving this matter. In hindsight, I should not have pled guilty. I was trying to handle this matter myself quickly and expeditiously."
Craig, 62, is married and in his third term in the Senate. He is up for re-election next year. He was a member of the House for 10 years before winning election to the Senate in 1990.
He has been one of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's top Senate supporters, serving as a Senate liaison for the campaign since February. As word spread of Craig's guilty plea, a Romney campaign spokesman, Matt Rhoades, said in a statement: "Sen. Craig has stepped down from his role with the campaign. He did not want to be a distraction and we accept his decision."
Sidney Smith, a Craig aide in Boise, said Monday afternoon that the senator was "in the (Boise) area" but was declining to give interviews.
Minneapolis airport police declined to provide a copy of the arrest report after business hours Monday.
Roll Call, citing the report, said Sgt. Dave Karsnia made the arrest after an encounter in which he was seated in a stall next to a stall occupied by Craig. Karsnia described Craig tapping his foot, which Karsnia said he "recognized as a signal used by persons wishing to engage in lewd conduct."
Roll Call quoted the Aug. 8 police report as saying that Craig had handed the arresting officer a business card that identified him as a member of the Senate.
"What do you think about that?" Craig is alleged to have said, according to the report.
Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada, the Democratic majority leader, had no comment on the report. A spokesman said he was not ware of the arrest until it was reported in Roll Call.
Sen. Mitch McConnell, the Senate minority leader, was traveling in Kentucky and hadn't heard about the arrest, said spokesman Josh Holmes.
Craig hasn't said whether he plans to run for a fourth term next year. His spokesman, Smith, was uncertain whether Craig's guilty plea would affect his re-election plans.

I'm not sure exactly what he did, but I can't think of any "lewd acts" in a men's restroom that would fit in line with the family values platform... And this is a guy who felt he needed to go on national TV in 1982 to say he didn't have sex with male congressional pages.

Supposedly that is a known code for sex, but hopefully its just in that area because I tap my foot all the time. My innocent foot tapping could cause me some serious pain!!!
I did read that the cops in that area have been investigaiting lewd conduct in that airport for weeks. Craig did all of the "signs" that the people wanting sex would exhibit.
I don't care if he is gay but he voted against every major gay issue in the senate since hes gotten elected.

and nearly doubles my chances of getting a date in the men's room.
It's basic physiology...
When you're in the can... especially when you're sitting on the shitter with your pants off your waist and your bunghole exposed... you DON'T make contact with anyone else... right? You DON'T scoot your foot over to tap the foot of the guy in the next stall... you DON'T stick your hand under the wall and wave... HELL... you DON'T even pretend to exist.. right? We all do... guys, that is. The only ones that do this stuff are the guys that want to share their stall with another guy.
Hail, Hail!!!

there was a lot more than just foot tapping. According to the cop, who was occupying a stall, Senator Craig waited for the occupant to the right of the cop's stall to leave. While waiting, Senator Craig looked through the crack of the door at the cop for what seemed to be longer than a minute -- long enough for the cop to notice Craig had blue eyes.
Once the occupant of the stall to the cop's right vacated, the Senator went in, moved his roll-on luggage in front of the stall, blocking the door, and sat down. The cop noted that the Senator was wearing slacks and black dress shoes. He then noted that Craig started to tap his foot, all the while slowly moving it toward's the cop's foot to his left. Finally, Craig's foot actually touched the cop's foot. It was then that the Senator lowered his left hand, palm up, under the bottom of the stall's side and ran his fingers back and forth, showing them to the cop. Each "run" of his hand showed more of his fingers until the cop could see Craig's wedding band and palm.
It was then that the cop flashed his badge by holding it in his hand and lowering it towards the floor in between the stalls. Craig yelled "No!" and immediately got up and started to leave the stall. The cop detained him and told him he was under arrest and asked Craig to move to an office within the airport where they could talk privately with another investigator, in order to save Craig's dignity. All this time, the cop did not even know that Craig was a Senator, he just took him for a business man. Not until they got to the office did Craig, when asked for his Driver's License, pull out his business card with the Senate Seal on it and demand, "What do you think of THAT?", to which the cop responded, "I asked to see your license."
For the record, you can find the full report in the Huffington Post, for one.
I like the way the cop handled himself, "I asked to see your license". He's gots some xplaining to do.

reminds me why I switched to being a liberal Democrat.
alrighty so he's not gay, he just solicits sex from men in a public men's room.

Unfortunately for him, other men are climbing out of the woodwork and bringing up his past to reporters. I give him a week before he resigns in shame.
Um, make that less than a week.
makes ya wonder what he was doing with those male pages in the Senate office building men' room...errr, or would that be the Senate Office building little boy's room?

in the Pages, my friend. Not to mention, in other public restrooms.

Yeah yeah yeah I didn't know all the details. It sounded very vague at first. I don't know about the rest of you guys though, but I do enjoy putting on finger puppets and putting on a show for the guy in the stall next to me. I've lost touch with my gay friends and am just not up to snuff on all the public restroom sex scuttlebutt I suppose. Honestly though, of all places, when someone is on the shitter?! How nasty is that?!
But seriously...no shit eh? ....you'll have to excuse my toilet humor...
If some guy waved at me under the stall and started flirting with me, I'd be getting ready to pop him square in the jaw upon exiting if the situation escalated.
That is just creepy as hell...
A disturbing level of sexual deviancy is what that is.

I didn't see his entire angry press conference, but none of the comments that I've heard actually denied soliciting sex in the bathroom... All I heard was, "I'm not gay" or "I love my wife" or "I did nothing wrong in that airport bathroom"... that's great and all, but did you try to get some man-love from the guy in the stall next to you?

...are those who've helped us.
Right 'round the corner could be bigger than ourselves.
However, why was he arrested? For being gay? Was he bothering a lot of people who tipped the police, or did the police just start surveillance in order to catch gays in the act?

im guessing it ws part of a plea deal. from essentially soliciting sex or prostitution or something to a simple misdemeanor that's naught but a fine and an embarrassing black eye.
Evidently there were reports of lewd behavior and men soliciting sex from that particular bathroom. That is why there was an undercover cop there in the first place. Craig demonstrated the reported behavior of someone looking for man lovin so he was detained. It is not like he will have to serve time for this but for someone who voted against every piece of gay rights legislation in his term he deserves the embarassment for being a hypocrite.
