Lawn signs ...

As much as I feel annoyed when I run the gauntlet, walking down my street between dozens of McCain/Palin lawn signs, I wouldn't trespass on someone's private property to express myself. I really don't appreciate the asshole who went up on my lawn today ... kicked in and mutilated my Obama sign, and put a McCain sign beside it.

I hate living here right now.

What kind of douche bag would do that? You should contact the local McCain campaign headquarters and tell them that if another sign shows up on your lawn you will file trespassing charges against the headquarters manager.

    Wow. Screw that.

I worked for Obama in New York on the runup to Super Tuesday, and you know what candidate surprisingly had the worst/most asshole supporters? I know he's got fans here, but Ron Paul by a landslide. Of course I don't hold the behavior of his supporters there to Paul or his supporters here, but my God they were horrible. We'd put down an Obama sign and an hour later we'd go by and the sign would be mutilated, a Ron Paul sign in its' place. This happened with every different candidate; we also had Paul supporters sabotaging campaign offices of other candidates, Democrat and Republican alike (including the Obama office I was in charge of). I guess all's fair in politics, but they turned me off of Paul for quite a while.

You know, you don’t have to tell anybody who you’re voting for.
All political signs posted on lawns piss me off on a certain level.

I know who's doing it, they live about 2 miles down the road and Im friends with the farmer they work for.
A guy that works for me caught them last month hunting on my land and ran them off....
I'm afraid it could get ugly. When they're sober they come around looking for work and act like they're my best friends.

  • People who put up lawn signs, put on bumper stickers, etc. are magnets for a-holes. Quite frankly, there is no reason, whatsoever, to tell the world your affiliations. Do you feel like you are going to influence someone to your side of an issue/affiliation? To me, people who do this are expsoing themselves to morons, so why? Seems narcissistic. Or just put up twenty or so signs. The sign equivalent of shock and awe.

I've debated this for years and I guess it depends on where you live.
I'm located off a major highway in our area and I'm always approached by local candidates Dem and Rep to place signs on my land.

I usually let everyone put up a sign if they ask, I just tell them they can't vandalize the other candidates signs. This usually pays off because the local elected officials lend me their ear from time to time and it always helps to have the sheriff on your side.

And yes, I'd put up a McCain sign if they would ask. They just haven't.
Usually the Democrat signs go up first and the Repubs don't ever bother asking unless they know me.

I don't care if people put up signs or bumper stickers.
What annoys the crap out of me is when their candidate wins and then they keep the sign up for months. Dude...we get it. Your guy won. Get over yourself.
And trespassing on someone else's lawn and destroying their sign, or anything else they own just because they're supporting a certain candidate, is wrong.

    True

But I have run and served in local campaigns enough to know the signs create enough familiarity to have a positive outcome on the elections.
I've had many people thank me for placing the Obama sign and afterward several followed.
    I don't think it's narcissistic though..
Maybe if I went and stood by the sign and looked real pretty then maybe it would be narcissistic:)

My first reaction was to take a picture of it, and then I e-mailed it to a bunch of my friends ... some whom are local Republicans. I live outside of Philadelphia, in an incestuously Republican Catholic neighborhood. I was born here, what can I say except that somehow that didn't rub off on me. I've also managed to raise my kids to be open-minded and thoughtful.

The friend who came in to point the sign out to me is a registered Republican, who is decidedly liberal and always votes Democrat. Why the party registration? If you want to get a job here (in the school district, township, etc.,) you have to prove a Republican party affiliation. The place runs like shit, by the way, but the "powers that be" are in blissful denial of it ... for the the past glorious fifty years.

I dread going to the polls, but I vote in every election, no matter how small or seemingly inconsequential. My polling place is in the home of a relative of the county's Republican party boss ... and they paint an elephant on the driveway leading up to the garage where the machines are housed. If the Democratic party (or any other party, for that matter) sends volunteers to this particular polling place, they're relegated to the sidewalk. I always give them credit and thanks for showing up. The atmosphere is more than a little intimidating.

The McCain signs will be around here for months after the election, no matter the outcome.

My favorite was from the 2004 election, though. One of my neighbors nailed a Bush-Cheney sign into the trunk of a tree with a huge nail. I'm not an arborist, but I'd say that it had to do at least a little damage to the tree ... and to me, that pretty much said it all.

Wow that's some scary and intimidating stuff right there that you have disguise what party you're registered to. That's why I kind of wished I lived in the opposing party's county and see if anyone would try and intimidate me.

Put up some more signs, set up a camera and see if you can't get some pictures of the destruction, then email them to a national paper or broadcasting company. They'll have a field day.

I just heard this story - did I hear it on the Message Pit?

A guy had an Obama sign on a tree in his yard and it was pulled down. He put up a sign that said, "I just donated $100 to the Obama campaign. And I'll continue to do that every time you take down my Obama sign."
