no offense.. but how do his education and wealth enter into it?

why would/should you listen to the political views of anyone? :D

Agreed. I mean don't get me wrong it drives me crazy when he rants and raves as well, but his wealth and education really do not factor into this at all. If it did he would be republican because he's got a shit ton of money. But the point is he does sometimes take it a little too far. He kinda forces it. It doesn't change my opinions any, but I can definitely see it changing younger minds.
  • I wish they would step out of their comfort zone a little bit. Try something completely new like Radiohead did. I don't want PJ to make electronic music, but just try something different. Every album they have a few songs that would make a great example of an outside the box sound. Here are a few examples: Oceans, Master/Slave, WMA, Foxymop, The whole "No Code" album, All Those Yesterdays, No Way, Faithful, Rival, Sleight Of Hand, Green Disease, Arc, Parachutes.
  • I don't understand why people don't like it when e.v. speaks out...have you ever been witness to an injustice and wished that you had just a little power to do something about it? And I think that is where he is coming from that there is injustice and he can't be silent, especially if he has the little power to possibly open minds.

Don't like? .... are you serious? -- ok.. this is going to be hard.. :D

I don't like them because I can't see them perform live every single day in my life. (<-- that would be pretty cool... - imagine Ed and guys sitting in my livingroom with their guitars and stuff... and just jamming and having a good time) ... :D lmao

:) I love them so much that I can't say anything negative... becuase there is nothing I don't like about them.

Love! Don't hate.... Just accept the way things are and get over yourself ;) (my philosophy of life)

There's nothing I dont like about Pearl Jam, except for some of those elitist fans who knock some of their songs. Came across someone who said he'd vomit if he heard Army Reserve one more time, I mean come ON!! Army Reserve is one of my most favourite songs off the Avocado. I've been sitting up to 3 in the morning watching old PJ videos on YouTube, and I've been in a constant state of excitement recently about PJ because of seeing so many of these great videos of them when they were starting out. I haven't slept properly for a week because I've been watching their dvds until the early hours of the morning too. (I'm talking 3, 4 oclock in the morning for the past week). I just cannot get enough of this band. I know they are "only a rock band" but they can do something many other things/people can't do for me (and I'm talking someone who's in a very difficult marriage at times) they MAKE ME HAPPY!!!!! Looking forward to them going back into the studio and seeing what comes out this time from so many creative geniuses. Awaiting the next issue of "Deep" too. There's so much this band give to us, their fans - dvds, albums, tours, merchandise gallore, the fantastic Ten Club - they really CARE about us, their fans, and dont treat us with disdain the way some other rock "idols" do. PJ are the most human, down to earth band on the planet and their music is second to NONE!!!!!!!!!

I think it's coherent, honest and brave of them to express their social & political opinions even at the risk of irritating or loosing fans. It's part of who they are not only as individuals but also as a band, the band you and I love... and respect!

Last album and some of Riot Act seem half assed. PJ used to make great sounds for songs, with lots of builds and dramatic parts in the music. The recent albums seem to be just trying to make songs. Just play a riff behind these words. Seems that they are either trying to hard or not enough. They don't seem truely inspired like they did on Binaural and everything before.

Boom's circus clown organ sound. I like the organ in rock, but his sound is just cheesy to me.

    Thats it.

Those albums are not half assed!!! Obviously nothing they've done recently pleases you, so why are you still a fan of theirs? The Avocado is brilliant, and Riot Act is great too. And yes, while I'm at it learn to spell. The word is "too" not "to". One thing I can't stand is someone who claims to be a fan of Pearl Jam who just knocks them. There's no pleasing some people. I heard Mike say he really likes Riot Act, but he DOESN'T CARE if others don't. So good on you Mike!!!!!! I know they put a hell of a lot of work into those last 2 albums, the Avocado took a year and a half to record and you call it HALF ASSED!! Just what do they have to do to please you, you seem like such a whinger. And Boom puts in at concerts, really gives his ass and plays with his heart and soul and all you do is KNOCK him! Well, you're welcome to your opinion but I'm not even going to bother to await your reply, should you read my answer to your message. I can't stand people who never seem to be pleased with what Pearl Jam come up with just cos it's not the same as what they did in the early days.....

Yeah, but when they get more they fucking always find something to whinge about, eg Riot Act and the Avocado having no depth, easy riffs, too old school blah blah blah. Poor production on albums. Eddie's political rants. Not enough touring and then when they do tour it's always in the wrong places. The Ten Club's ticketing. Rising ticket prices (when the band still do their ultimate to keep them low). It seems no matter what PJ do, there's always someone around to knock them. Give me a break, I dont want to hear people's complaints about the world's greatest band anymore so I'm not going to bother reading anymore of this stupid thread.

    hmm...

im amazed by the amount of people who are giving out about Eds political comments. i think to be fair, its not just ed. the other 4 seem to be very active in political/environmental/social activities, if they had the mic theyd probably bring it up too (and they do in interviews).

A PJ show without rants doesnt make any sense at all to me.

its good to challenge the audience - take them out of that comfort zone of just being at a rock concert. and if this many people bitch about it, then the band are right to challenge them. theyre not meant to be groundbreaking political insights, theyre meant to make you think.

the only thing i dont like about the band is the lack of Stone's work on the last 2 albums. the songs he writes are usually slower, riffed ballads, and more awkward than eds stuff (a good thing)...a few more on the new album would mix it up nicely (judging from his recent solo stuff theyd be quality too)

Ah shit... I love these guys!! I am not about to start judging them after all these years. I just hope they keeping making music.

OK, the thing that first comes to mind is the ranting about politics from Eddie.
I respect his right to his own opinion and I respect his intelligence to know that he is most likely well informed. However, I truly feel that anyone in that calibur of fame that has manhy people listening to their views also has the power to change the circumstances that they do not like.
What I mean is that in his regard, he has the means to meet with senators or others involved in the law making process and perhaps see some of the changes being truly developed.
It's not that I don't think it is valid; it is as valid as my right to my own opinion, whether I agree with him or not, but I just think his energy could be better spent in action with those who can try to change the issues at hand instead of just riling up a bunch of fans.

1.) Ed's rants - I agree with a lot of what he says, but I don't need to hear it every show. Throw out an issue, a couple of facts, and get playing again. If it's not a political or fund-raising gig, keep it to a minimum. Music and politics do go hand in hand to a point, but there have been times in this country's past when the influence was a little extreme and people formed opinions based mostly on what they heard at a concert or from a performer - not necessarily seeking the information for themselves. It's kind of amazing to me that in this day and age with the internet, 1,000 channels of TV, and blogs that people can be so naive...then again, there is a lot of mistruth out there to be devoured as well.

2.) Album production - with the analog equipment they own, the time they take between records, and the technology to affordably produce it, there's no excuse for the terrible production on the last few albums. Binaural had great atmosphere, but in terms of the instruments sounding like they're supposed to, it started to go downhill from there. It also makes the songs sound odd when played live. It's cool to have different sounds, dynamic levels, and styles - but it's just been too much overproduction lately.

3.) There's almost too much PJ stuff out there to be consumed now. I know - 10-12 years ago, I never would have said that, but I almost miss the days of having to hunt for bootlegs and getting excited when there was a 1/4 page news snippet in a magazine. The GOODS section is like a Sear's catalog these days, and the stuff people really want to have is gone 6 seconds after it's on sale.

    4.) T-shirt quality...'nuff said.

    :)

I don't like that, theoretically PJ could be my neighbors (as I live in Seattle), yet I have seen them live a whopping one time! It is especially frustrating because I can afford it now, haha.

I thought this may be interesting, considering we're all fans. There must be something which you don't like about them...

    Mine are :

    1. Ed changing the lyrcis at shows. For the most part, they are great lyrics, and there's no need to throw in spontaneous words..

    2. Under Rehearsed songs - I'm all for mixing up the setlists but they need to nail the songs before playing them. e.g Can't Keep from Hartford 2008 is just painful to listen to.

    3. A certain air of mysticism has gone, ever since 2000 really. That brooding intensity..

What? You don't like changing up words to songs? Thats one of the highlights of the live show. Besides getting a good look into Ed's head, he usually has the change refer to something in the area or going on in the world at the time.
Don't like changing lyrics at a show is just crazy talk...

The things I don't like about Pearl Jam have nothing to do with the band themselves....The sweating to get the tickets online, waiting for new info that gets passed around the rumor mill for weeks or months before it ends up in the mailbox of the fans, that kind of thing.
Oh, and their bootleg recordings are not that great. I prefer others to what they put out.
Thank you fellow 10 clubber for saving my ass....again!!!

I don't really care one way or the other, so, I'm just going to take a stab at an answer and play devils advocate. Possibly it's because Ed's views are expressed during the concert when he is less than sober. Maybe fans get tired of the rants because they lack the eloquence of unique expression found in the man's lyrics and his obvious talent for expression. Espousing a serious political view while taking swigs from a bottle of wine and lacing the opinion with "F bombs" can degrade the credibility of the statement for some listeners.

I do not think Eddie's lack of formal education is a deterrent to the truth in which he believes or should it influence us as fans, either positively or negatively in our own thoughts and convictions. The man himself encourages everyone to fully explore these issues and intelligently derive our own opinions.

The sheep mentality of some PJ fans concerning Eddie is at times frustrating. Eddie likes a certain band, he hangs out with certain celebs - Oh - I like them too because he does! They have the EV stamp of approval. How do any of us know we'd even like Eddie if we really had the opportunity to become his friend? I respect his song writing talents and musicianship, HE even agrees with the majority of MY political views - but that doesn't mean he'd do it for me as a friend. Now, the man is incredibly easy on the eyes, but that's no basis for a true friendship. Possibly an amazing tawdry affair of the mind - but not a friendship ;)
I wish a guy like Eddie, would like me.
