whats the best concert you've ever been to?

i've only been to 2, but i'm still young, & plan to go to more, especially when i'm in college!!!
so with that said, i'd have to go with Counting Crows w/ Maroon 5 @ Jones Beach, 7/31/08

however on 10/29 i'll be seeing The Who and i'm pretty sure that will far surpass CC/M5

(for today) I'm going with Metallica, Cardiff 1986...yeah with Cliff on bass ;)

Only because Hitch Hiker was so impressed when I told him ( at the Czech Inn, Dublin) on Monday night :D
    I came, I saw, I concurred.....
  • Live 8 in London... the line-up was just ridiculous: Pink Floyd, The Who, Paul McCartney, U2, Sting, Coldplay, The Killers, Elton John, Madonna, Mariah Carey, Snoop Dogg and many others... I'm not even a fan of most of those pop icons, but to see all that in one day was just sick.

  • moe. in albany, ny 3/7/08. best opening to a show i've seen, fantastic lights the whole night, plus i got on stage during the encore (with about 20-30 other people) to sing the chorus to "raise a glass". i'll never forget that night.

    **edit**
so over the weekend, a few other shows came to mind.

pearl jam buffalo '03. setlist seemed like it was made just for me, i got to hear about 95% of the songs i wanted to hear.

robert randolph and the family band turin, ny '02. afternoon set, outdoors and the entire crowd was dialed in. it was like everyone was sharing the same thoughts, feelings, energy. just an incredible set.

soundgarden syracuse, ny '96. lolla tour. they played just as the sun started to set. the stifling heat was dying down, with a nice breeze coming in through the crowd. we were about 20 feet from the stage. great mix of old and (at the time) new songs. just a great, great time.

moe. syracuse, ny '03. played in a small club, billed under the name monkeys on ecstasy. first set was their new album. played the entire thing, from beginning to finish. second set was an hour and 45 minutes long, but was only 3 songs, all segued. encore included one of the most amazing covers of 'godzilla' i've ever heard them do. really happy to have seen them at that show.

moe. cape cod, ma '07. stage was in the middle of the crowd and it revolved. had my wife with me, plus a friend from new zealand (her first moe. show). just great fun the whole night.

billy joel syracuse, ny '05 (or '06, can't remember). played all the greats, and then some. OCC showed up during 'we didn't start the fire' to give him the motorcycle he had them build. really cool getting to see (and hear) the bike. plus, some footage from the concert was on their show (obviously).

bob dylan syracuse, ny '04 (i think?). won the tickets for this show. pretty good seats, too. close to the front, on the side. just amazing seeing a living legend on stage.

willie nelson vernon, ny '04 (again, i think? hard to keep all the years straight). the bill was actually moe., willie, and the dead. brought my son with me and just had one of the best times ever, listening to great music the whole day. we were really close to the stage for willie's set. blew me away, how long he played for. i didn't think the old man had that much in him. and just like dylan, it was great seeing another living legend.

flaming lips turin, ny '03. wow. just......wow. if you've ever seen the flaming lips live, you know what i mean. if you haven't, get your ass to one of their shows.

that's about all i can think of right now.

I was at Philly too. All I was thinking during Keith Urban was "I wonder how much a flight to London would have cost?"

    U2 in Montreal, 2001. Fucking mind-blowing.
"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."

Patty Griffin - The Bayou, DC, 10/4/98

Lucy Kaplansky, The Birchmere, VA, 9/15/01
Son Volt - side stage at one of the early HORDE tours, they'd only released Trace at that point.
Too many Nields shows to count
    PJ -Hartford '08

I tend to gravitate towards shows in smaller venues. That said, REM doing "Country Feedback" and "So Central Rain" in '95 and Page/Plant on "Kashmir" '97, both at the Spectrum, will live on forever in my imagination.

  • Close between:

Pearl Jam- San Francisco 2006 (any of the three shows, really)
Arcade Fire- The Warfield (SF) 2005, Berkeley 2007 (either show), Mountain View 2007
It makes much more sense to live in the present tense.
