Do you hit skip when they get all indie and vulnerable? :p
He's very selective with his contempt for this stuff. As I recall, he likes The Devil & God Are Raging Inside of Me by Brand New, a vulnerable, earnest, heartfilled, self-absorbed album if ever there was one :D

and very very angry and pissed off. it's closer to the afghan whigs... songs about what an asshole the singer is rather than how heartbroken he is.
    and like that... he's gone.

nope. they manage to do it without being whiny ppretentious pussies. though i do skip that one song on z about going over the hills and through the woods with the carnival music. it sucks.
I think the problem is that you seemed to write off all "indie" music as pretentious and pussified, when you were probably just talking about bands like Vampire Weekend and The National - y'know, the stuff that really sucks. But then there are bands like MMJ and Sleater Kinney (RIP) who kick ass while still being "indie", to whatever extent.

Brand New are weird. :p I sometimes think they're good, I sometimes think they might might be good if I put some effort into listening, and I sometimes think they're rubbish.

i like the national. i hate sleater kinney.

i just hate hipsters. those record store morons acting like a dog barking is somehow compelling. and they're the same ones who love to hate on buckcherry for being low brow or whatever. those people need the sticks removed from their asses. or josh todd to fuck their girlfriends while they watch and cry and think about what vinyl they're going to play to perfectly encapsulate how they feel about it... maybe the one of sheep bleating this time. :)

Just out of curiosity, how is assuming the listener gives a toss about how much you hate yourself for being an asshole any less of a whiney lame-ass thing to do than assuming the listener cares about your broken heart?

Don't you also like Twilight by Elliott Smith?

As long as the songs are well-written, there's nothing wrong with them being introverted and about heartbreak or whatever. Christ, rock music is derived directly from the blues and country music, both of which deal generally with unrequited love.

I've never heard their earlier, apparently pop-punk stuff but the Devil & God is terrific. I was surprised by how good.

I just love that you're getting on your high horse about hipsters getting on their high horses.

i love that song. most of elliott smith's stuff. that's pain. i can't stand the theatrics of the flavors of the moment. it's less to do with subject matter and more to do with the bullshit pc-ness and hypocrisy of the people listening or performing it. they say buckcherry is bad because they're low brow and sing about drugs and sex, and that is deplorable and offensive. but their little indie act is just a ruse to try and get girls to fuck them while they talk about how sensitive they are and do ecstasy. buckcherry is at least honest about what they're in it for... the fun and the party. these other bands are like politicians, it's all an act from lame theater majors trying desperately to get laid with a different game. it's dishonest poser music. they're like the subject of this song:

their first album is laughably bad. their second one is very good with some misses. that last one is gold.

Everything you said there is true, but not all rock music that isn't of the Buck Cherry sort is like what you just described, that's all I'm saying :)

I'd rather look for the stuff that isn't like that than listen to Buck Cherry.

I will concede however that, when really drunk, Kid Rock's All Summer Long is vaguely entertaining.

oh i agree. i've been overstating the case... because that's what buckcherry is all about ;)

don't think i know that song (edit: i do, i thought it was werewolves in london the first time i heard it :) it is fun though) but i don't care what anyone says, kid rock's 'devil without a cause' is from start to finish one of the best albums i ever heard.

im' just about honesty. you can hear it in buckcherry, they know it's dumb, but it's fun. there's no pretense, no posturing. same with kid rock, just a swagger he knows is goofy coming from a trailer park cracker. i love tv on the radio becaus you can feel the soul in their music. same with the cold war kids. i just can't handle the theatrics of the panic at the disco stuff... it's as over the top, histrionic and affected as the teenage drama queens listening to it. though the last panic album wasn't half bad. i feel the same way about indie snobs... there is no way those dudes when home that night and listened to those dogs barking. they probably put on a bon jovi album. it's so affected and dishonest and it annoys the shit out of me. and it's why i like buckcherry, because they're the kind of guys that would beat the shit out of those posers at a party and do shots of their girlfriends' nether regions (if that's physically possible). i miss rock and roll that had some attitude.

Oh god, Panic at the Disco are horrible. I reckon I'm a pretty good judge of sincerity in music so, while there is a ton of utterly awful music that trades cynicism for honesty and just gets 14 year old girls to buy into its supposed "sadness" or whatever, I just ignore that shit and move on.

OH MY GOD. I think I just threw up in my mouth a little.

If KID ROCK and BUCKCHERRY qualify as "bad ass rock & roll" to you, then you need to have your head examined. Just because they live the rock & roll lifestyle and "fuck people's girlfriends" doesn't make them any more authentic than Bon Jovi.

If you want to have a rock & roll party, then put on "Exile On Main Street" or "Appetite For Destruction" at top voulme. THAT's the real shit.

Just because they live the rock and roll lifestyle and "fuck people's girlfriends" doesn't make them authentic. Their music is tailor made for meatheads with bad taste in music. If listening to those bands constitutes a "good time", then you've been to one too many frat parties.

Isn't Josh Todd married and completely sober/clean now anyway?
