Pink Cellphone? Are you kidding? I deleted it from my tracklisting it was so bad; the only song on the album that is bad, imo.
    i'm really not! haha
the other tracks just sound so typical and predictable so to me only that track stood out for now haha

Am I the only one who really loved self-titled? Oh well. Hexagram 2 is amazing, IMO.

Nope. I thought it was their best album to date. It was just no-nonsense, pure emotion. No overproduction. Loved it.
  • I just got the album...got to listen to it...will post my opinion later....but I am going to see them Dec. 5 @ Nokia Theater in NYC....I am so hyped....
  • Am I the only one who really loved self-titled? Oh well. Hexagram 2 is amazing, IMO.

what is hexagram 2? the opening song on the self-titled is just called hexagram, right? am i missing something?
  • what is hexagram 2? the opening song on the self-titled is just called hexagram, right? am i missing something?

Yeah, sorry, my mistake. I was trying to remember what the song was called (haven't listened in a while to that CD) and a stupid review I googled called it Hexagram 2.
'We're learning songs for baby Jesus' birthday. His mum and dad were Merry and Joseph. He had a bed made of clay and the three kings bought him Gold, Frankenstein and Merv as presents.'

  • I like it. I think, in the same way some people still expect Pearl Jam to remake 10 or VS, that some people still expect to hear Around The Fur which is just stupid, its 2006 now, not 1998, Deftones are a completely different band now with different tastes, I for one love the direction they've gone into and hope they're around for ages, one of my favourite bands and White Pony is just incredible.
    "I am a doughnut." (live - Berlin, Germany - 11/03/96)

"Behave like rock stars - not like the President." (live - Noblesville, IN - 8/17/98)

"Yeah, I was gonna learn to play it (Breath) but somebody slipped me a bottle of viagra and was busy doing something else six times last night" (live - New York, NY - 9/10/98)

  • Well I like the soft songs which are Beware,CherryWaves,Xerces. The fast paced songs are Rapture, Rats! Rats!Rats!(the drumming in this song is freaking awesome), combat. I like Pinkcellphone, it's different and love what the girl( i think) says..funny shit too.lol

I understand there are fans that would like for a band to do albums like when they first started...but a band has to evolve or else i think the band will get bored...they need to change and experiment...that's what Deftones do...No one sounds like them or like the singer Chino...which is unique...
That's a risk any musician has to take....They change to what ever makes them happy and what they think fans might like...in saying that....musicians will loose fans, gain new ones and in bewteen there are fans that stayed there through out the changes no matter if some sucked or some were great.

Now seeing the band live....I've seeing them a few times....Chino has his days...he is not perfect(that's what we humans are)lol....when his voice is in good shape, he sounds awesome and when his voice is not that strong for him to scream...he still manages to get the audience hyped.
Abes is awesome at the drums. Chi rules on bass and steph...well he is in his zone...frank, spins those records and delivers great beats that go well with the songs. They all have a special skills to express and make greater when they can.

Now that's what I think of Deftones....
If anyone here is going to see them at NYC 12/5...Let me know maybe we can meet up and enjoy the show....
    :)
  • this album is beyond everything i'd ever imagined.

it's one of the most amazing albums i've ever heard in my fucking life.

    WOW.

without a doubt the best deftones album ever.

    album of the year !

    10/10
  • I think there was so much hype for the past year or so about this album that it was hard to live up to my expectations. Its definately a solid record. Unfortunatly i bought the who album at the same time and i've had a hard time taking that out of my cd player. Maybe next week it will get or playing time.

I advise you to take time to clear your mind first and then put it on your cd player...you will like some songs...I bet you will....lol
    enjoy!

  • Is that track only on itunes? Because I read that this was a bonus track on the clean version of the CD (makes no sense why it's not on the explicit version...)

thanks for postin the link though, look forward to checkin it out.

And gotta say i do love the new album, it's their most eclectic to date, and Chino really sounds good (i.e. Cherry Waves, Xerces)...And yeah as lots of people mentioned..Pink Cellphone really should've been a hidden track or something, as it interrups the flow of an otherwise cohesive album...I think time will tell how this rates against WP.

    no problem man..

what me know is..it's the bonus track on the clean version of the album from Itunes.
i have both the clean(bought it accidentally) and explicit versions of the cd..and no bonus tracks on the actual cd.

  • I never liked them, aside from maybe a song. They are headlining a radio station show in St. Louis next month. I will be there to see Sparta (who should be headlining IMO), I will probably leave before the Deftones even take the stage.

  • i think the deftones will always be a niche band (and that's a good & bad thing in a way), and I think as long as they maintain their integrity then they will always have their fanbase and have my respect.

Damn, that's a good cover indeed! Should've been on the CD instead of Pink Cellphone or something

i think you nailed what i would have said. i was pleasantly surprised by how good this album is after being super disappointed with their self-titled.

its not that I EXPECT them to sound like Adrenaline and Around the fur again.. its that the bar was raised SO high with those albums it just makes this new stuff hard to listen to.. i grew up with those albums.. they are fucking amazing still to this day.

if were talking about.. say Radiohead.. ok yes there's a band that raised the bar from the get go but continued to evolve and in my mind continue to get better.

  • I like SNW a lot, getting into it a lot more now, the contrasts between the heavy and the melodic is very interesting. And track 3 (Beware I think) is great. I'd say SNW is 3rd on my list of Deftones records:

    White Pony
    Around The Fur
    SNW
    Deftones
    Adrenaline

Having said that, I've not listened to Adrenaline for years, perhaps I'll dig it out tonight.

Very solid album. Maybe it's because i was expecting something like this on the last album, but it stuck with me immedietely.

    SNW
    WP
    Around the Fur
    S/T
    Adrenaline
“I know this song so well, I can smoke a cigarette, have a drink, brush my teeth, take a shit, and mow the lawn while singing it. But I'll only be doing a couple of those things during this version.”
  • My favourite album of theirs....

I disagree with what someone said earlier on this thread, its NOW the bar has been raised...

There's nothing nowhere near as beautiful as Beware, Kimdracula or Combat on Adrenaline...

Album of the year, well I'll have to wait for Light Grenades...
