simply one of the most heartbreaking melodies ever written.
"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"

it's astounding that the Boatman's Call was made by the same guy that did Stagger Lee on Murder Ballads :)

Are you the one that I've been waiting for is lovely too.

I was going to say that one but overall it's just average for him. The bridge is heartbreaking though.

Rockin in the free World from Pinkpop 92 with PJ is the saddest song for me..

Maybe because I had it on my cellphone and listened to it right before I threw up after a little bit much to drink... sad moment...

I liked "Rockin" for the first time now after seeing them playing it in lolla.

I loved it, hated it and now I love it.

A stand up soldier to the very end he made the ULTIMATE sacrifice. Give a listen as James Hetfield rips into these powerful lyrics @ Pat Tillman...Disposable Hero. I salute you and your family's grief.....this is as sad as it gets.

"Fighting wars for peace is like fucking for virginity".

Just aint gonna happen in this lifetime!

    Disposable Heroes

    (Hetfield / Ulrich / Hammett)

Bodies fill the fields I see, hungry heroes end
No one to play soldier now, no one to pretend
running blind through killing fields, bred to kill them all
Victim of what said should be
    a servant `til I fall

    Soldier boy, made of clay
    now an empty shell
    twenty one, only son
    but he served us well
Bred to kill, not to care
    just do as we say
    finished here, Greeting Death
    he's yours to take away

    Back to the front
you will do what I say, when I say
    Back to the front
you will die when I say, you must die
    Back to the front
    you coward
    you servant
    you blindman

Barking of machinegun fire, does nothing to me now
sounding of the clock that ticks, get used to it somehow
More a man, more stripes you bare, glory seeker trends
bodies fill the fields I see
    the slaughter never ends

    Soldier boy, made of clay
    now an empty shell
    twenty one, only son
    but he served us well
Bred to kill, not to care
    just do as we say
    finished here, Greeting Death
    he's yours to take away

    Back to the front
you will do what I say, when I say
    Back to the front
you will die when I say, you must die
    Back to the front
    you coward
    you servant
    you blindman

    Why, Am I dying?
    Kill, have no fear
    Lie, live off lying
    Hell, Hell is here

    I was born for dying

Life planned out before my birth, nothing could I say
had no chance to see myself, molded day by day
Looking back I realize, nothing have I done
left to die with only friend
    Alone I clench my gun

    Soldier boy, made of clay
    now an empty shell
    twenty one, only son
    but he served us well
Bred to kill, not to care
    just do as we say
    finished here, Greeting Death
    he's yours to take away

    Back to the front
you will do what I say, when I say
    Back to the front
you will die when I say, you must die
    Back to the front
    you coward
    you servant
    you blindman

    Back to the front.

  • Not sure if people consider all these sad. But these were the 1st songs that came to my head at least that are really
    emotional.

Nine Inch Nails Something I Can Never Have and Blind Melon Mouthful of Cavities. Which were posted already.

Marilyn Manson- Coma White. Not a huge Manson fan but a
    great song I think.

Pearl Jam- I Got Shit and Nothing as it Seems.

Harry Chapin/ Ugly Kid Joe- Cats in the Cradle.

    Staind- Epiphany

Stabbing Westward- What Do I have to Do

Nirvana- Pennyroyal Tea. I seen other unplugged Nirvana songs posted but the unplugged version of this song just has so much pain in it i think when you hear Kurt singing. You can pick any song from there MTV unplugged.

Red Hot Chili Peppers I Could Have Lied. Scar Tissue also but to a lesser extent.

    Radiohead- Talk Show Host

    The Cure- Bloodflowers.

    Everclear- Twistinside.

Seven Mary Three- The Water's Edge.

These are more songs that when I listen to them they make me think of sad things. Could be a personal thing.
    1998- MSG 1
    2003- MSG 1 & 2
    2006- Irving Plaza, Albany, NJ 1 & 2
    2008- MSG 1 & 2
    2008- EV NYC 2
    2010- Hartford
    2016- MSG 2

that part is SO good. lyrically it's nothing mindblowing but the melody is beautiful and his singing is great.

"I've sat and I've watched an ice age thaw,
are you the one that I've been waiting for?"
"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"

    Ben Folds - Late
Phil Collins (and The Postal Service) - Against All Odds
a large part of Nick Cave's No More Shall We Part album
New Order - Blue Monday - if you know what it is about it is thoroughly depressing

It changes all the time for me. I guess it depends on where you are in your life but Black has been killing me. I have to second Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah and Johnny Cash's version of Hurt. I know Otherside was mentioned but when you throw it in with Sad it's a killer. You can almost feel the guys pain.
