How about Somewhere over the Rainbow? I know it is not meant to be sad but the melody just breaks my heart...
The worst enemies of music? Money and Mathematics. Combined with music, they both do the exact opposite of what they're supposed to do. Money makes music cheap, mathematics makes it stupid and predictable.

On the subject of songs that are supposed to be happy but instead are heartbreakingly sad, how about What a Wonderful World. That song should be one of the happiest songs ever, but instead it just kills me. I'm not sure why.

i disagree that Everybody Hurts is a sad song. IMO, it is about hope and inspiration and never giving up or in tothe the problems we may face. Yes, I am Dr. Phil.

I'll second River Of Deceit, and also add To Sheila by Smashing Pumpkins - never fails to pull on my heart strings.
  • Something like 'River' or 'A Case Of You' by Joni Mitchell spring to mind for me... She was such an angel...

Also, 'Helpless' and 'Helplessly Hoping' by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young...

agree with all of these. tears in heaven is the only clapton song I can listen to. he's normally horrendously cheesy and middle of the road.

Right Where it Belongs is stunning but so sad.
