Jon Mayer: Lame or good musician

On his new album Mayer says, "waiting, waiting on the world to change" Why the fuck doesn't he do something to change it besides getting stoned, playing guitar, and playing with the mop on top of his head.
On the other hand. He seems to be a good guitarist. Thoughts?

In a couple of years I think we will all look back on him with favor

I agree......many great players have had pop hits......even Eric Clapton!
Many acts have had pop hits, yet eventually, still retained their cred!
Brave to try to gamble at times
You’re on the outside, never bound by such a spell.
Together in the darkness, alone in the light.
I took it upon me to be yours, Timmy,
I’ll lead your angels and demons at play tonight......»
Me neither.. I don't think he's incredibly lame or incredibly good.. His music is entertaining in a "background music" kinda way... As opposed to PJ - when I hear them I stop whatever I'm doing to appreciate it...

Some die just to live.
yeah, letting the blues fall by the wayside is a great idea....

Great friend.
The guy is a great guitar player. One of the better ones that I have seen live. Most of his radio hits aren't all that good but that takes nothing away from his talent.
When they played the theme to Diff'rent Strokes together?
That was awesome!
By the way, his new album Continuum is his most solid effort to-date and is easily one of the best albums to be released this second half of '06.

Met Jeff Beck.
He's one of the greatest guitar players in history.
I guess now's a good time to link to him.
Running into him again reminded me of why you're reading these words right now;
Because I'm a guitar player.
And you can't cheat at guitar playing.
Jeff Beck wins fair and square.
You can ask a computer to help you with singing
But computers are afraid of guitars.
Guitar playing rewards only the pure.
I'm half pure. (Working on it.)
Guitar playing helps you meet girls
and makes sure you never see your family.
Guitar playing never failed a lie detector test.
I've said it before, but it deserves another go round...
Say what you will about my words, my voice, my behavior
but end it up with "But I gotta hand it to the guy, he can play"
and I'm cool.
Not that I've given up on trying on the rest...
JM
Also, whatever he says in the album liner notes about "If you are reading this with an instrument in your lap- get to work. And deep in it. We all need you."
