Jon Mayer: Lame or good musician

On his new album Mayer says, "waiting, waiting on the world to change" Why the fuck doesn't he do something to change it besides getting stoned, playing guitar, and playing with the mop on top of his head.

On the other hand. He seems to be a good guitarist. Thoughts?

  • I'm not a fan but he is a very good guitarist (at least with his trio),great at playing Hendrix tunes, but I could never get into his originals.
I need a fix 'cause I'm going down
  • Good guitarist, but plays shitty music. Therefore he is lame.

"Hey, if God didn’t want me to wear it so much, he wouldn’t have made them rock so hard."
  • Good guitarist, just lame music.

  • Well, I will break the chain. I think he is an awesome guitarist and is turning into quite the overall package. Sure his first album was very pop, I really enjoy the "Heavier Things" album (minus "Daughters",which even he admits he fought for that NOT to become a single), and thought it showed a lot of promise. I really love the trio album, and I think his new album is just as good. It's much more laid back, but has a hell of a groove to it.

In a couple of years I think we will all look back on him with favor

I agree......many great players have had pop hits......even Eric Clapton!

Many acts have had pop hits, yet eventually, still retained their cred!
  • he can play a hell of a guitar, but his lyrics/songwriting are awful.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I think he's not only amazing but highly underrated. He's an amazing guitarist, and his new album is unreal. I haven't stopped listening to it for the past few weeks. Very soulful and bluesy. I think he's only gotten better with time, so who knows what the future holds in store.
  • Don't like his music, his guitar playing is boring. We do not need someone modeling themselves after Clapton.
Using the word "methinks" in your message board posts doesn't make you look smart.
  • I am not sure what to think of him.

Me neither.. I don't think he's incredibly lame or incredibly good.. His music is entertaining in a "background music" kinda way... As opposed to PJ - when I hear them I stop whatever I'm doing to appreciate it...

Its John(with an h) and he is alright, I've always wanted to like him more because he is a really good guitar player, but his lyrics and vocals don't really do it for me.
  • I think is good, not great, but is not bad, I've heard worst music, nice guitarist!

The Trio album is fantastic, and Continuum sounds great too. Hes a damn good guitarist.
I've faced it, a life wasted, and I'm never going back again.

  • i dont like him.. his voice is annoying!
    5/09/06, 5/10/06 - FUCKIN AMAZING!!!!
  • i think he's waaaayyyy lame, sanitized blues ala robert cray.

i think the best thing mayer's ever done was chapelle's show.
John Mayer is said to be a good guitar player. Big deal, there are lots of them. His singing and songwriting are for young girls that know no better. Fine, they can have it. DON'T make the mistake of knocking R. Cray. He really is good. Mayer's a sissy!

There's a big difference between an artist's talent and the crap that they play on the radio.

The guy is a great guitar player. One of the better ones that I have seen live. Most of his radio hits aren't all that good but that takes nothing away from his talent.

When they played the theme to Diff'rent Strokes together?

    That was awesome!

By the way, his new album Continuum is his most solid effort to-date and is easily one of the best albums to be released this second half of '06.

  • John Mayer is a helluva a talent, you really think Steve Jordan or Pino Palladino would play with him if he was just a pop singer for little girls? I think not, and the guy has gotten respect and played with Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton and BB King. If the man has those 3 guys respect then he should have everyones. Alot of people get the mistake of not liking music and then assuming they artist is a hack with no talent wich is irritating

Talented guy so good musician but his music is pretty bad so he's also lame.

For all of you who say his music is lame, have you heard his new album?
  • How is his live album Try!? I've heard he is a very good guitarist and have been wondering about this live album since its been released.
I share a cigarette with negativity.

TRY! is awesome. I would highly recommend it. He does a great cover of "I've Got a Woman," along with some other amazing songs.

And Continuum is basically a Trio album, as Steve Jordan and Pino Palladino played on every track, with some added musicians here and there. Its just mellower blues than Try!

A good little quote from him:

    Met Jeff Beck.
He's one of the greatest guitar players in history.
I guess now's a good time to link to him.
    Running into him again reminded me of why you're reading these words right now;
    Because I'm a guitar player.
And you can't cheat at guitar playing.
Jeff Beck wins fair and square.
You can ask a computer to help you with singing
But computers are afraid of guitars.
Guitar playing rewards only the pure.
I'm half pure. (Working on it.)
Guitar playing helps you meet girls
and makes sure you never see your family.
Guitar playing never failed a lie detector test.
I've said it before, but it deserves another go round...
Say what you will about my words, my voice, my behavior
but end it up with "But I gotta hand it to the guy, he can play"
    and I'm cool.
Not that I've given up on trying on the rest...
    JM

Also, whatever he says in the album liner notes about "If you are reading this with an instrument in your lap- get to work. And deep in it. We all need you."
'Give me some music; music, moody food/ of us that trade in love'
    -Shakespeare
