NakedClown wrote:No shit - you'd be hard pressed to find a better string of albums than: MENTAL JEWELRY-THROWING COPPER-SECRET SAMADHI-THE DISTANCE TO HERE...
Fuck - those four albums make for a better career than 90 percent of rock bands...
I have never loved Mental Jewelry (except for the 3 singles)----but I do agree with this statement 100%. Copper through Distance is one of the best 3 albums stretches any band has ever had (yes there have been a lot of good stretches, but this one definitely ranks). Along with that, Birds and V each have more than enough good material to warrant purchase (I haven't got the new one yet).
But, if I am not mistaken, Live has always gotten bad reviews.
Now a little off topic...
I know it is kind of cliche to say, but who in the world is more useless than critics? Really. Every summer movie critics are yapping about how they matter despite the fact that the blockbuster they gave a "2 star" review to made $200,000,000. Throwing Copper got terrible reviews ( I remember reading some of them and laughing then) , but it has sold like 6 million copies . And here we are THIRTEEN years later still discussing it. Yeah, keep telling yourselves that your $60,000 communications degree is being put to good use, you blowhards!I love my female wife...

Was just listening to it the other night for the first time in a while.
i've actually heard white, discussion on the radio quite a lot on dc101 in washington... don't know if that's just like a regional thing or what, but i do recall hearing it a lot. but i agree, it's a great fucking song.0 -
Throwing Copper is the best thing, second only to my coveted Pearl Jam albums. Pure classic! T.B.D and Pillar of Davidson give me chills like no other songs. I don't care much for any of their other albums except for Distance to Here witch is also pretty damn good.0

Songs from a Black Mountain is good? You must be drunk. That record is terrible."It's the American Dream I am disbelieving... When the gas in my tank feels like money in the bank... I’m gonna blow it all this time, take me one last ride..." - Gone (vedder)0 -
Just saw them a couple weeks ago at the Eagles in milwaukee. They played a few off Throwing Copper. Great show, glad to have gone.0

There ARE very 4 good songs on that record, 2 so-so songs, and the rest are mediocre to bad...
Doesn't mean I love this band any less...0 -
I just saw Live for the first time last month in Halifax. The band put on a kickass show but it was so poorly attended (2000-3000 in a 10000 seat arena). That didn't stop the band from delivering though. You had to feel a little bad for them.0

How can you skip over "Beauty of Gray"????? Amazing song...0 -
I think Mental jewellery and Throwing copper are good albums. Like some have mentioned Throwing copper is a classic, too bad they went down hill from there. Secret Samadhi was alright, but after that they just drifted away from what I like in Throwing Copper.« One man's glory is another man's hell.

yeah Throwing Copper is no doubt a classic album, i didnt mind a few of their later albums, The distance to here was okay, had some moments, but after that album i wasnt overly impressed all though i did buy V.Run to the hills

I love Live, and 'Throwing Copper' is undoubtedly my favourite album of theirs. Saw them live twice, once on Secret Samahdi tour and once earlier this year. Although later albums are not as good as 'Copper', when you hear them play the new stuff live it kicks ass - just somehow doesn't translate onto CD.
I think Secret Samahdi,V and Throwing Copper are great, but the others have great songs on them too. Birds of Pray did smell slightly of cheese tho as Ed clearly went through a god stage... never good... "I don't need anyone to tell me 'bout heaven, I look at my daughter and I believe" Hmmmmmm.

Throwing Copper is one of my personal favorites. I remember the days of it's constant radio play. Wow, were those the days. Good music on the radio. Fast forward 10 years or so and look what we have now. I wish we could go back.I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me.0

There are a few standout tracks on BOP, too - but overall, it is a lesser effort...
But it did give us songs lie Rivertown and Like I Do...0
