  • Nor would I... but it certainly is stoner ;)

Then again, I find it quite debatable whether you can call Down metal either.

Now, now... Philip H Anselmo is the greatest metal vocalist to ever live!

    Down are metal as fuck.
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.

OK... but Anselmo is the greatest metal vocalist to ever live because of the band he came from, right? And other band members are from some of the greatest metal bands etc. but that has no bearing on Down themselves, necessarily.

As far as I can hear, Down seem to be influenced by Southern Blues/rock and are hard Southern Rock. I can see where the metal comes from but some of this album reminds me more of Temple of the Dog or Soundgarden than other metal albums I have.

But then, what do I know right Sian? ;)

obviously i dont even listen to it, and although this sounds bad, its the clothes of the band and all the shitty death-related imagery that puts me off it... but mostly the shit hair and poor clothes... leather waistcoats with nothing else under them... welcome to 1987

Not every metal band adheres to some kind of "death-related" image you know. Look at the guitarist from Boris for example. Does she look like a metal guitarist? Prejudices can be harmful things Dunk :)

Besides, how is it any more daft and contrived than The Raconteurs? Someone should tell them that The Band broke up ;)

Yes indeed, what do you know...

    Down are metal.

So they have a southern influence? Doesn't stop them being metal.

    Down are metal.

It's irrelevant of who came from what band (could you name them all? :p).

    Down are metal.

You really shouldn't compare them to Temple of The Dog or Soundgarden. Compare them to CoC, Alabama Thunderpussy, Exhorder (not heard of them, right?) or even AiC but don't compare them to Soundgarden!

    Here here!

Dunk should realise that not all 'metal' is a hate fuelled, dirty sounding, evil assault to the ears.

But then, i'd expect that opinion of someone who doesn't know what they're talking about ;)

she doesnt look like one at all.. but she's in a band called Boris... ergo i'd never find out about her in the first place. Boris?

    i like The Band :D;)

I blame Avenged Sevenfold for lots of things... like shite music and a jilted, misguided generation... but that's for another thread.

oh oh oh!! is it 'Torn' by Natalie Imbruglia?!

That's about the extent of your musical knowledge, right? :o

Of course it's irrelevant. That's what I'm saying. You cannot necessarily say that Down are a metal band just because Down comprises of some great metal musicians. They have their own sound. That's my point.

I can name Corrosion of Conformity, Eye Hate God and Pantera.. but who gives a fuck anyway?

    OK, sorry Sensei.

You really shouldn't compare them to Temple of The Dog or Soundgarden. Compare them to CoC, Alabama Thunderpussy, Exhorder (not heard of them, right?) or even AiC but don't compare them to Soundgarden!

Incase you didn't get it.... Down are metal.

I'll compare them to whoever the hell I like. If I think they sound like Soungarden/Temple of the Dog, that's my right. If I can hear it, it's there.

Well done for knowing about some obscure bands I haven't heard of yet. Good show.

OK, sorry Sensei. I bow to your superior knowledge and your more informed opinions. :p

Fuck no, I don't like the Raconteurs and don't think they sound anything alike but there is something Bandsy about the way they dress, like they're Upstate New York in the 19th century.

The Band were amazing, don't worry, no blasphemy going on here.

i just dont see a comparison. except perhaps robbie robinson could be arrogant and i suspect perhaps jack white can be too on occasion.

when it comes to the raconteurs, or as we call them down these parts, the saboteurs, im more a brendan benson fan. :)

    you listened to the greenhornes???

ah yeah ok. when i say see i really mean hear. you know see it with my ears. anyhoo... for me, no band evokes the emotions in me like the band do. it has truly been a privilege to have been listening to them for the past 25 or so years. i still remember the first time i saw them play 'live' . i was staying up very late one night and the last waltz was playing on the tv. it grabbed me, pulled me in and ive been totally gone ever since. :)

and yeah id say give the greenhornes a go. :)

  • Just heard some Cult of Luna and Isis. I also remember Jamie giving me a link to some Om. All of this I've absolutely loved. I'm assuming this sound is Doom metal. Who should I be listening to with this mega slow and atmospheric sound?
