You definitely want to check out The System Has Failed and United Abominations. They are more in the classic Megadeth vein, particularly the latter.

Cryptic Writings was a solid album, with a good mixture of heavier and radio friendly material. Risk is the one the entire fanbase hates. It was just too much of a departure. Its Megadeth's version of Cornell's "Scream", though not as much of a radical change. The World Needs a Hero was a half-assed attempt to get heavy again, and save a few songs, its just boring.
Damn right about Risk. "Breadline" is basically a pop song (not that I don't enjoy pop songs, I just don't want to hear them from friggin Megadeth).

As for great metal bands, I can't say Opeth enough times, but I'll try:

    Opeth
    Opeth
    Opeth
    Opeth
    Opeth
    Opeth
    Opeth
    Opeth
    Opeth
    Opeth
    Opeth
    Opeth
    Opeth

    Alright, that should do it.
  • Albums I bought today. Dillinger Escape Plan, Ire Works. Sikth, The Trees are Dead and Dried Out. Converge, Jane Doe and Down, Over the Under. :)

That Down album is great! Check out NOLA if you haven't already. Also if you like Down musically, check out Corrosion Of Conformity. Its guitarist Pepper Keenan's main band.

I'm not a big fan of hard metal but I really like Slayer's Seasons In The Abyss. It's just a rock out album...

It's taken 26 years of my life to get into real metal, but better late than never.

    Pantera
    Sepultura
    Cavallera Conspiracy
    Down
    Meshuggah
    Gojira
    Between the Buried and Me
    The Dillinger Escape Plan
    Mastodon

... all totally amazing. Here's to the next 20 bands I hear for the first time.

Edit: Oops, wrong forum. Ah well.

great list. I concur with others on Lamb of God as well. Ashes Of The Wake is probably the best place to start with them. Also try some In Flames, Amon Amarth, Kataklysm, Children of Bodom, or At The Gates. Slayer always works for me too.

i was going to suggest Converge for everyone. Jane Doe, You Fail Me and No Heroes are all equal levels of awesomeness. the production on Jane Doe is a little too metalic for me... You Fail Me and No Heroes is where it's at!

Dillinger's Ire Works is probably one of my favorite records from last year.

Isis is good but stick with Oceanic and Panopticon. their newest, In The Absence of Truth, isn't all that great.

Lamb of God use to be awesome. New American Gospel, As The Palaces Burn and about half of Ashes of the Wake are amazing. Sacrament felt like a rushed, unfocused album.

oh yeah, listen to KYUSS!! Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age on guitar. essential listening... Blues For The Red Sun, Sky Valley, ...And The Circus Leaves Town.
  • Yesterday I bought

    Hatebreed - latest one
    Soulfly - latest one
Machine Head - The Blackening (latest one and the only title I could remember)

    All excellent.

Still looking for Between the Buried and Me, 'Colours' and Mastodon, 'Leviathan'. I also need to get me some stoner/Southern metal as I fuckin' loved the Down album I bought. Kyuss is my first port-of-call and cheers to whoever it was who suggested some more.

I'll check out Isis and Children of Bodom as I can definitely get hold of some in the local shop.

edit: I forgot to say, I bought Opeth, Watershed, and I really have a love/hate relationship with it. I really love it musically.. they are obviously skilled musicians and I love how it goes from heavy metal to very quiet/ambient, almost folk-sounding. Musically I love it.

HOWEVER, one song on it sounds slightly like a Disney ballad ('Burden' I think) and I don't really like the guy's singing voice (the growling is fine), or his teenage poetry-esque lyrics.

    Slow down Mark-san!

Allow the music to absorb before you buy more of such differing genres!

You don't think this is a good way of learning about genres?

Hmm... if you're suggesting there's only one way to go about this, I might have to find a different mentor ;)

And btw, I have been absorbing quite heavily.. How is hours and hours of listening every day for the last 2 weeks?

dude.. it'll pass... you're a flutterer... 6 weeks ago you were into seasick steve or bluegrass... 4 months ago it was living off-grid... 8 months ago it was Arcade Fire... if you listen to only metal and at this intensity you'll just get fed up of it and move onto something new and shiny like chromerock...

Not at all but remember Mark-san, Sian only learn her knowledge through years of metal discovery. It take loooooong time for Sian to get this good. ;)

The lotus, she say "don't run before you can walk, Mark-san".

Oh, someone suggested Obituary? Get 'Slowly We Rot' - Great album :D

and one more thing... Soulfly's latest is 'Conquer' and Hatebreed's is 'Supremacy' - Both blinding albums.

(I've just realised I made a faux pas... The lotus, she forget how you roll Mark-san. She is most humble in apologies. :o;))
