I don't know how many people were there. Definitely felt like 100,000. Here are three pics I took from the front (Stone's side) waiting for PJ to come out. These pics don't even come close to showing how large the crowd was, its just me holding my arm up and trying to get a shot of the massive crowd. Damn it was hot that day.

I was in almost the exact same spot, and have a similar picture. It's just a bit later in the evening.

I've been in a crowd of 120,000 (RHCP & Pixies in Dublin) and it certainly didn't look like that many. I don't really think you can go by the look of a crowd.

Regarding their biggest crowd ever, they played Slane in 1993 with Neil Young and there's usually crowds between 80,000 and 100,000 there.

I think there was only about 35000 at slane that year and the crowd was nowhere near as far back as it is when sold out (from what ive been told by a couple of people that were there), intense Pearl Jam set though!!

Was that RHCP and Pixies show in the Phoenix park?? Cant remember, I remember pixies played landsdowne road some years back aswell and I seen RHCP at slane years back aswell (03 I believe)

Redmosquito85 you talking about 1993, the year PJ played with Neil Young there we're only 35,000? Is this info from your friends or do you know of a more reliable source like an article? 5Horizons quotes 30k I think but not sure where they got that figure from, I'm guessing fans too.

Hahaha...damn, I think it is the exact same spot. We must have been standing right next to each other. Nice. Me and about 8 other people stayed in that spot from about noon that day until PJ came on.

I was just thinking about the '93 show in Toronto. Between 60-70,000 people. NOt bad considering it wasn'e a festival. It was a Neil Young concert with Blue Traveler, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam as openers. Still one of the best non- festival line-ups I ever been a part of.

As someone else quoted, 167,000 which Billboard also quoted for the weekend. They also said no days were sold out. I guess it's hard to say for sure if it was there biggest crowd, in the US it most probably was. Here's a list of other big shows, with less reliable numbers:

    6 & 7 July 93 Stadio Flaminio, Rome, Italy (w/U2) 80,000 each night
    27/8/06 Reading Festival, England - 75,000*
    25/8/06 Leeds Festival, England - 70,000*
11/7/95 Soldier Field, Chicago - 70,000 (though figures range to as low as 47,000)
14/6/98 RFK Stadium, Washington DC (TFC) 66,000
    18/8/93 CNE Stadium, Toronto, (w/Neil Young) - 60,000
    8/6/92 & 12/6/92 Pinkpop Festival, Holland - 60,000
5/8/95 Golden Gate Park, San Francisco 53,440

Other notable mentions are Rock Am Ring and Roskilde festivals which are 2 of Europe's largest festivals 150,000+ over the weekend and Werechter too in Belguim though I'm not sure of the exact capacity for it. Eastern Creek Raceway in Sydney, Australia in 1995 was also a large one though no capacity is known, G'N'R played to 71,000 a few years pervious.

*Reading & Leeds figures confirmed by the festival, 60,000 each day weekend tix + 15,000 day tix fro Reading, 10,000 for Leeds)

I lived in the Chicagoland area my whole life and the old Soldier Field sat 67,000 people. I was at that show and not only were all the seats taken but the whole field was General Admission and that was almost filled. I remember that's when PJ was not using Ticket Master and the company they used fucked up was basically giving tickets out at the gate. About 10 people I knew got into that show by just walking up to the gate and complaining that they never received any tickets and got in. So it was way over booked. 70,000 is a very reachable number for that show.
