eh, I guess there is no way to know for sure. I have been in crowds of a million and crowds of 70k. this felt like much more then a bears game, which is about 60k I think. the crowd seem to go on forever. good times.

per Jeff, That was the largest crowd they ever played in front of in the US. I spoke to him after the show.

ha, being a fan of pj doesn't make anyone automatically "cool". I've met a ton of assholes and snots at Pearl Jam shows.

But I guess being a fan is a good start though huh?

Well I know that I am cool so there!!! HAHA!!!

You are right about some though. For the most part people are nice that I have met but there is a always a few.

I was at that show! It was amazing, unbelievable! It was a great life experience that I will never forget! There had to be way over 100 000 people there. It was a very intense show. Pearl Jam rocks! The best band in the world!

Nope, that's the AT&T stage, but the picture is taken from the east facing west. The building in the left hand side of the picture is the Hilton, which was directly across from the AT&T stage. I do think that some of these pictures are showing the crowd from the east to the west, but are crimping the expanse of the crowd from south to north -- a much longer distance.

I thought I read in the paper the day after that some police estimates said the crowd was 100-150,000, but I thought that police departments had given up on making estimates like those.

  • As someone else quoted, 167,000 which Billboard also quoted for the weekend. They also said no days were sold out. I guess it's hard to say for sure if it was there biggest crowd, in the US it most probably was. Here's a list of other big shows, with less reliable numbers:

    6 & 7 July 93 Stadio Flaminio, Rome, Italy (w/U2) 80,000 each night
    27/8/06 Reading Festival, England - 75,000*
    25/8/06 Leeds Festival, England - 70,000*
11/7/95 Soldier Field, Chicago - 70,000 (though figures range to as low as 47,000)
14/6/98 RFK Stadium, Washington DC (TFC) 66,000
    18/8/93 CNE Stadium, Toronto, (w/Neil Young) - 60,000
    8/6/92 & 12/6/92 Pinkpop Festival, Holland - 60,000
5/8/95 Golden Gate Park, San Francisco 53,440

Other notable mentions are Rock Am Ring and Roskilde festivals which are 2 of Europe's largest festivals 150,000+ over the weekend and Werechter too in Belguim though I'm not sure of the exact capacity for it. Eastern Creek Raceway in Sydney, Australia in 1995 was also a large one though no capacity is known, G'N'R played to 71,000 a few years pervious.

*Reading & Leeds figures confirmed by the festival, 60,000 each day weekend tix + 15,000 day tix fro Reading, 10,000 for Leeds)
    My PJ shows:

I wouldn't begin to be able to say how many were there, but after leaving the main grass area, we stopped at that set of stairs to just let the crowd thin out a bit before we left the park, and so we watched, and the field still looked full like a half hour after the show was over. People just kept walking. Being in it, it felt like a huge number of people.

  • I don't know how many people were there. Definitely felt like 100,000. Here are three pics I took from the front (Stone's side) waiting for PJ to come out. These pics don't even come close to showing how large the crowd was, its just me holding my arm up and trying to get a shot of the massive crowd. Damn it was hot that day.

and I also think there are a good amount of people who went sunday only.

I was one of those that didn't show up until Sunday night right before PJ took the stage!

Great show though! I agree it was well over 100K, there were people everywhere.

My friend is a Chicago Cop and was working the show and he said the there was well over 100,000 to 110,000 people on that Sunday. The crowd went into the Buckingham Fountain which is way the hell back from the stage. I felt like jumping into the fountain after that show.....

I was inside the security railings, near the wheelchair area....

Right before PJ took stage, there was a long line to the wheelchair bathroom and I was in a very distressed state so I told the head security guard I wanted to get the hell out of there and go to the bathroom outside.... but he said no and that I'd never make it back inside (quite frankly, I didn't give a fuck at that time because I was too pissed off) and told another guard to take me under the stage.

I was thinking to myself, "OMG...I'm going to have to pee under there?!"

But no...he took me backstage through under the stage to use their bathroom and when I got out of the can, I saw the crowd from up the hill (if it was even a hill!)....

Oh!!! What a breathtaking view!!! I was really blown away! No picture of the crowd could justify when you really saw with your own eyes!

It went all the way, past the opposite stage!

The feeling was really incredible just looking at that crowd and I immediately thought of how PJ felt when they saw everyone getting on the stage.

    :D

So, yeah I think it was over 100K!

wow that is ridiculous. I tried taking a pic or 2 from the front row, but there was no way to get high enough to even fit 1/4 of the ppl into frame.

    That show rocked! My fave!

i didn't know pretty girls listened to pearl jam
  • I've been in a crowd of 120,000 (RHCP & Pixies in Dublin) and it certainly didn't look like that many. I don't really think you can go by the look of a crowd.

Regarding their biggest crowd ever, they played Slane in 1993 with Neil Young and there's usually crowds between 80,000 and 100,000 there.
    Hey hey it's okay...
