Kay Hanley, formerly of Letters to Cleo fame, is one of my all-time favorites.

Also - I'm kinda surprised no one has mentioned her yet - Beth Hart is amazing.

  • Patty Griffin....
    Sarah Harmer...

And whoever said the girls from Lucious Jackson, I totally agree!

Pretty much all of them? Especially around these parts.

But I'll say Kathleen Edwards and Gillian Welch. They're my two favorite female musicians, but I rarely see them mentioned outside of the "alt-country" realm.

Edit: What am I saying, "favorite female musicians"? There two of my favorite musicians - period.
Kathleen Edwards is really cool. I need to get more of her stuff. Saw her open for MMJ a few years ago it was a great show.

Courtney Love *runs and hides for cover*

I know everyone hates her, but she's written some amazing lyrics, and man can she fucking belt it out when she wants to:

    Honestly.

I know people say that Kurt wrote most of the album but frankly, if he did, he was a moron for giving the songs away :D

Nina Simone. Loretta Lynn. I suppose they are both well known, but still never seem to be properly credited/acclaimed. although i suppose loretta has been. nina definitely has not been. i want to put my all time favorite female vocalist, Billie Holiday, on here, but i know she is acclaimed, at least nowadays.

  • I'm going to agree and say Ani. She's probably the most talented and passionate writer out there on the female side of the fence and it's a damn shame more people don't listen to her. She's very much like a Dylan in her writing, she's extremely talented on the guitar and she can sing much better. Few writers have the ability to draw me into the narrative of their songs like she does. Now having said all that, I absolutely hate it when she introduces brass instruments (horns, etc.) into her music.
  • Ani so true!! Im adding Patti Smith... Not Smythe mcenroes wife... but PATTI SMITH!!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0brHGJ6xqbk
  • Neko Case. I have never been a big fan of female singers but, MY GOD, this womans voice is one of the most beautiful voices in the history of music. Her voice always puts me in a better mood.

PJ Harvey is pretty badass too.

I'm confused by some people's interpretation of the word "underrated". I mean, Bjork?! PJ Harvey?! Patti Smith?!?!

Well presumably if he wrote songs like Doll Parts, he wrote them FOR Courtney, rather than just left them behind and she stole them, unless you can picture Kurt singing "I want to be the girl with the most cake" :p

my friend just gave me some stuff from a band called "duke spirit" thats ive been digging so far... but i guess thats it

PJ Harvey is amazing, and has been producing great work for such a long time now. Stories from the city, stories from the sea is a must have for me!

This really is a curious thread, in that people are listing all of the most highly praised female musicians of recent times rather than underrated ones :)

  • Natalie Merchant gets my vote.
The Official Matt Cameron appreciation signature!
  • I would have to say Kim and Kelley Deal for their work in the Breeders and for Kim's work in the Pixies.

Also, Amanda Palmer of the Dresden Dolls.

PJ Harvey in no way gets the the same level of recognition that males would get if they produced the same pieces of music.

I was gonna say her too. She's the first that popped into the old noggin. Maybe not necessarily the most underrated except to those of us that really like her, but hey, I never claimed to not be biased. Is she still touring?

Maybe she doesn't get the same commercial success but she gets a shitload of critical recognition. I'd say she's one of the most highly (and relatively widely in comparison to other musicians of her ilk) praised female artists of the last 20 years.
