  • Musician or singer?

I'm going for Alanis Morissette... I have too :o
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.

Ditto on the Neko Case. I never understood why she isn't bigger than she is. Also Mellissa Auf De Fur Mauer and PJ Harvey! Love them both.

Probably in the rock genre but female singers in pop and especially in RnB are well-respected, probably more than the male singers.

The girls from Luscious Jackson are underrated muscians.
Fiona Apple hasn't gotten enough credit after her debut.
    Cat Power is awesome too.

  • I can agree with Neko Case, even though she seems to be pretty big on the "indie" scene.

I think Lucinda Williams should be HUGE. All of her albums are f'ing amazing from top to bottom. I know she gets lots of critical praise and does sell out most of her shows, but she should be on a much bigger level in my opinion.

As far as someone who doesn't seem to get much attention from anyone and has never put out a bad album, my vote would go to Kasey Chambers.

In what possible conceivable sense is Bjork underrated?

Seconded. Fantastic live performer, solo & otherwise.
  • I've always thought Lisa Loeb was underrated. Firecracker is still one of my favorite albums.
It makes much more sense to live in the present tense.

I'd have to say either Emiliana Torrini or Alison Goldfrapp, even though Emiliana's latest album isn't that great.
  • I couldn't say who's the most underrated coz I don't listen to a whole lot of female artists.
But I will say K.T. Tunstall fuckin Rules!

  • Charo. She completely kicks ass on the guitar. It was always her image first and her actual talent last.

Susan Tedeshi (not spelling it right sorry) She's just great.

Ani DiFranco. As popular as she is, I honestly don't think she will ever get the total amount of credit she is entitled to. What hasn't she done?! She has impressed me since the first sound of her. And not just her music but industry that she created around herself. Brillant.

Bjork, she lost a lot of people over a stupid dress. It bothers me what others are missing now. She is amazing. Did anyone see Dancer in the Dark and just ball your eyes out?

I know everyone hates her, but she's written some amazing lyrics, and man can she fucking belt it out when she wants to:

Pretty much all of them? Especially around these parts.

But I'll say Kathleen Edwards and Gillian Welch. They're my two favorite female musicians, but I rarely see them mentioned outside of the "alt-country" realm.

Edit: What am I saying, "favorite female musicians"? There two of my favorite musicians - period.

I'm with you on this, I'm past caring if nobody agrees with me. Truth is most of these artists are ignored just because they are female. women have to work 10 times as hard for a tenth of the recognition, it fuckin sucks
