I like U2, but I don't have one single album, so I guess I'll say R.E.M.

then you best start at the beginning.
i recently listened to boy,war and october after 17 years(bit difficult playing LPs on a disc player) and was relieved that the esteem i had for these albums was still justified. at least in my eyes...er...ears

R.E.M...just think about it. Every album from MurMur to Up was great or amazing. It's only on their last two albums they've gone a notch down. But can you blame them? They made GREAT albums for twenty years.
Murmur - A
Reckoning - B
Fables of the Reconstruction - B+
Lifes Rich Pageant - A-
Document - A+
Green - A-
Out of Time - A
Automatic for the People - A+
Monster - A
New Adventures in Hi-Fi - A-
Up - B+
Reveal - B-
Around the Sun - C+
And to me, I've never liked U2. I've always thought they were too polished. Their early stuff was good, I'll admit that. But after that it was all downhill. I can't even bear their new stuff. It's putrid.
I respect Bono for his worldy contributions but I can do without his music.
"This is another sing-a-long." - Eddie Vedder before singing Lukin live at Madison Square Garden.
and i think "Reveal" is extremely underrated... who agrees?
Totally agree. 'She just wants to be', 'Ive been High', 'Beat a drum', 'Ill take the rain'. Some great songs on that album. Totally under-rated....like Up.
Diminished off Up is one of the most beautiful songs they've ever written but because it's stuck at the end of Up(an album which has been wrongly slated), it doesn't get any recognition. A shame.
Like both. I've been to 11 REM shows since 1985 and 5 U2 shows since 1983, but I like REM more. I think their albums are much better, even their later ones. Around the Sun was pretty much dissed by the critics, but I dig the first five songs (LNY, Electron Blue, Outsiders, Make it All Okay, FINAL STRAW (fantastic song) and also think High Speed Train and Around the SUn are outstanding).
u2's live show is more of a "show" while REM's is more about the music. Also, REM does a much better job of mixing setlists from night to night. U2 pretty much does the same setlist (some variations) from night to night.
The one good thing about REM's decline in popularity in the US (I live in Missouri) is that they played smaller places last tour, and I really liked this. U2 can no longer play the intimate places.
I obviously like U2 more..but R.E.M. happen to be my 2nd favorite band. Pearl Jam being a close 3rd.
I liked the person who rated the REM albums..but I think your crazy to give Reveal a higher grade than Around The Sun. Reveal is a good album( and still loads better than most albums) but the 1st time I played Around The Sun I immediately liked it better than Reveal, Immediately!

U2 has remained relevent for 20+ years while R.E.M. seems to still be in a never ending cycle of trying to rediscover themselves since the mid 90s.
Quit sad really. R.E.M. had the potential to be one of the biggest rock bands in the world and they have pretty much just gone off a boring deep end.

Agreed, but it took a while to grow on me.
