I think their music is shit but any band who does that deserves the title.
Musically though I'd give it to sigur ros right now for being pretty consistent musically.
funny thing is, i love sigur ros. just can't stand hipsters.
Other than PJ, at the moment for me it would have to be Kings of Leon and My Morning Jacket.
But I have to say that I'm still enjoying the last Black Mountain & Black Keys albums.

Far too many great bands out there right now to pick a best. My current FAVOURITE however is Sun Kil Moon.
"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"
i think my real vote would be my morning jacket. the hold steady are my favorite, but they just don't have the genre-bending excitement of my morning jacket. mmj is a band in their prime really expanding their sound and kicking ass at the same time.
In terms of the absolute highest quality live shows? Nine Inch Nails hands down. Otherwise I can't single out just one - there are quite a few bands I like, that I think put out quality music, like NIN, Pearl Jam (of course), Springsteen. Then there's bands I'm not really into, but respect their quality, like Radiohead and Dave Matthews.

I really don't think there is a definative "best" band in the world right now. I mean...there certainly are some very good ones....and I definately have a list of bands that I personally think are dong their part to keep the whole Rock'n'Roll Fiasco alive and well.
1. Pearl Jam
2. QOTSA
3. Clutch
4. Dr. Dog
5. My Morning Jacket
6. The Black Keys
7. Radio Moscow
8. Radiohead
9. Black Angels
10. The Mars Volta
11. Liam Finn
"Best band in the world" is tough because does that mean the entire catalogue of artists who are still active, or does it mean only the recent catalogue of newer artists?
In the former case, I'd say Springsteen, the Black Crowes, or Pearl Jam.
As for the latter, I'd say the Arcade Fire or Interpol.

What makes a band the best around the world? longevity, sales, good live perfomances, discography, don't ''sell out'', be mainstrean? thinking about those points i think:
For the last 15: years: Pearl Jam
for the last 5 years: Foo fighters
and for the last 2 years: Arcade Fire.....
Wrong thread. You are looking for the one where all the clueless people post.
Neon Bible is the best album of the decade to this point, and after never thinking I would say such a thing, Arcade Fire have equaled, if not bested, Pearl Jam in terms of live shows.

you're the queen of bad puns today

NIN
The Thermals
Dead Confederate
The Whigs
Freshkills
Circa Survive
Gaslight Anthem
It's one of those bands, I'm just not sure which one it is. I'm leaning towards The Thermals as of right now, though.

The thing is that I thought Radiohead were great live, but just not as good as PJ. Their record catalogue is just below PJ's too.
