if you listen to there album it really wasnt that political at all really. . .as far as the diaries, i dont really have a problem with that. . .its just another form of merchandise, like a t-shirt, wristbands, or a hat. . .every band does that. . .id rather they do that then play their song in a car commercial

Its definitely political, maybe not political like Bruce Springsteen or Rage Against The Machine but the politics might be comparable to Pearl Jams

Outside of Holiday and American Idiot? I don't think political is the word you want to use. They might be considered social commentary. . .

I might add that American Idiot was not the first time they dabbled in political and social commentary. "Minority" is a political song. "Welcome to Paradise" would be quite at home on American Idiot. This wasn't necessarily new ground thematically. However, it certainly was structurally.
It makes much more sense to live in the present tense.

People who say the album was political reveal themselves as having never listened to the album. With the exceptions of Holiday and American Idiot, none of the songs on the album were political. When that album came out, I argued repeatedly on this board for American Idiot's importance and its brilliance. In my mind, it remains one of the great albums of this decade, beautifully encompassing life in post-9/11 America.

That being said, Green Day beat the album into the ground. They rode its wave for far too long and allowed the songs to be used in ways that violated the principles on which the album was based (see American Idiot being used in Wedding Crashers ads. . .). For that reason, I can understand them being called sellouts.
agreed on all fronts. . .i still wouldnt consider them sellouts though. . .
i have wished for so long, how i wish for you today
