how did i not think of the who? and i like them. . .they are just too much. . .the car commercials, csi on an endless loop, enough already. . .when do people say "i have enough money", dont need to ruin my credability
You never heard of The Who Sell Out? Many of those are commercials for real things-- and they're on their real fucking record!
From Jason Newstead of Metallica on VH1: "Yeah we sell out; sell out every show every time." Thought that was a classic, yet ridiculous line.

ok, ok, since i totally fucked up the poll here are the options:
1. ice cube
2. queen latifah
3. gwen stefani
4. mark mcgrath
5. other
by sellout i mean at some point the artist had some artistic credability. . .that excludes the brittany spears, madonna's, etc. of the world. . .i realize mark mcgrath is a stretch in that regard
How did Mark McGrath ever have more artistic credability then Madonna???
I'm not a fan or anything but I'm pretty sure Madonna is considered a classic Pop Artist along the lines of Tina Turner, Diana Ross, Sinatra etc.
Edit: Forgot to add that Gwen is the biggest sell out. Followed by Black Eyed Peas. Metallica, Green Day and RCHP did not sell out in my opinion but grow older. Thats a huge difference in my eyes.

i didnt mean to insinuate that i thought mark mcgrath was ever good in any way, hope you didnt take that the wrong way. . . i dont know, flicking through the channels and seeing him on et he was on my mind. . .sugar ray did at one point used to be a legitimate semi-punk kind of band. . .i dont know if i'd go that far about madonna, someone who lip sync's all there shows and charges hundreds of dollars for tickets to her shows. . .at least mark mcgrath actually sung in concert

How is Queen Latifah a sellout and while we're at it please tell me what exactly is a sellout?
I disagree with Metallica being a sellout, yes they made a mistake with going after Napster and have made some shitty albums of late.
....And so what, what is exactly wrong with having your son as a ringtone?
Peace
c'mon with latifah, now she's an actress, she's hosting awards shows, the last straw and the reason i nominated her was seeing her in some makeup commercial. . .as lame as can be. . .

I'm joining in for ny ususal "sellout is the most overused and therefore meaningless term in music today" rant. Every artists seems to get called a sellout at one time or another. People need to lighten up
If an artist tries something different, people call them sellouts. If an artist sticks to a familiar formula, people call them sellouts. Enough already.
U2 has always been about being big and getting a message out. So at what point did they sell out? Their records have always been good-with deep, meaningful lyrics. So they changed styles and Bono wants to save the world. So what?
Queen Latifah and Ice Cube left the tough street image behind and became actors. Big deal. They're both good actors (even if they both occasionally do lame movies)
Metallica aren't sellouts, they're assholes.

Metallica, suing people for downloading YOUR music is fucking sick, they make millions off of touring. Back before the Black album they were probobly the coolest guys, then money got in the way. Hell they even tried to do a numetal album with lars playing on a trash can, but it didn't go too well.

2 reasons...
1. Like it or not, it is a career for them. They do this for money. That doesn't mean they don't love what they do.
2. Its like The Boy Who Cried Wolf. it has been used so much, it means nothing anymore.
And besides, times are different now people. People like to say "(Insert artists name here) never would have done this ten years ago, they're sell outs now." I have news for you, ten years ago, FM radio would play new stuff (instead of the 15 song loops that get played EVERY DAY) and MTV and VH1 played videos instead of a million episodes of Cribs or Rock of Love all day. I don't blame artists for looking for new outlets (like commecials) to get their new music heard. U2's ipod commercial wasn't a sell out, it was brilliant.
If you are going to take issue with someone, take issue with Pete Townshend. Pete sold every Who song to Nissan, and proceeded to talk at one of his concerts about how "Won't Get Fooled Again" stood for something and don't think of it as a car jingle.
Or, dare I say it, Eddie Vedder. Eddie has always represented his music with sincerity, but I'll never forget him ripping Jewel for doing a commercial then proceeding to cover "Baba O' Riley" from his hero Mr. Townshend.
Don't get me wrong, I love the Who, but Pete is an ass.
And personally, I like the way Gwen Stefani has reinvented herself. She didn't sell out just because she started doing music some of you may not like.
I love my female wife...

Well, the self admitted biggest sell out is Gene Simmons, he wins this contest easy.

their music is their careers. . .commercials and such is easy money, its double dipping. . .its like selling your integrity as far as im concerned. . .your willing to forgive their lameness. . .alot of others arent. . .the word may mean nothing to you but if you read this thread it means something to alot of other people. . .there are still plenty of other places to have music heard, you still can get played on radio in most of the country, plus there's internet radio, movie soundtracks, myspace, etc, etc, and dare i say it. . .doing it the old fashion way and TOURING. . .when im talking about selling out im not really talking about new bands trying to make there way into the business, im talking about established acts who have already made millions and do these things because they have a green disease. . .i already mentioned that even though i like the who it makes me cringe how often there music is used for stupid shit and makes me respect them a little less. . .whats wrong with ed covering baba o'reily??. . .gwen stefani's selling out to me is a little different situation, she was in a pretty successful rock band and went solo to go pop r+b, and seemingly abandoned her band, basically living out the video for "dont speak". . .and yes i would still hit her sellout ass if given the chance

I disagree, it was boring and quite lame to become political when it became safe to be political because everybody else was doing it.
if you listen to there album it really wasnt that political at all really. . .as far as the diaries, i dont really have a problem with that. . .its just another form of merchandise, like a t-shirt, wristbands, or a hat. . .every band does that. . .id rather they do that then play their song in a car commercial

People who say the album was political reveal themselves as having never listened to the album. With the exceptions of Holiday and American Idiot, none of the songs on the album were political. When that album came out, I argued repeatedly on this board for American Idiot's importance and its brilliance. In my mind, it remains one of the great albums of this decade, beautifully encompassing life in post-9/11 America.
That being said, Green Day beat the album into the ground. They rode its wave for far too long and allowed the songs to be used in ways that violated the principles on which the album was based (see American Idiot being used in Wedding Crashers ads. . .). For that reason, I can understand them being called sellouts.
It makes much more sense to live in the present tense.
