He's a brilliant singer and i love Radiohead, but i dont think he has the stage presence as a lot of my other favourite singers.

    Respectfully disagree
Every time I see them they blow my mind
Energy's different then say Zach, but on par imo

I love how he plays with the crowd

Tough to limit to just 5

    Patti Smith
    Jon Spencer
    Neil
    Jagger
Bowie would also have to be on my list

Never saw Layne, Morrison or Plant or they'd be on it too
    '96 7 shows / '97 3 shows / '98 15 shows
    '00 12 shows / '03 4 shows / '06 6 shows

  • Lots of people listed so far that I would agree with, so it would be redundant to list them again (i.e. Freddie, Ed, Bowie, Axl, etc.) but one I would add is Marilyn Manson. I know, not much in the voice department, but for sly, deviant lyrical wit and sheer front-man presence he gets high marks from me.

  • I think being a frontman requires that person to make a connection with the crowd and be part of the band.Alot of singers are ego driven and like all the attention . So here is my top 5:-

    1)Eddie Vedder (Pearl jam)
    2)Mike patton(faith no more)
    3)Kurt cobain (nirvana)
    4)Chris Robinson(black crowes)
    5)Mark Lanagan(screaming trees)

The thing I love about Tweedy is that it's not about being a showman with him. It's more his witty and hilarious stage banter that makes him such a great lead singer/frontman. He'll tell a little story or anecdote in between songs and he really gets the audience in the palm of his hand. It's amazing to watch. He's also the king of shouting down hecklers.
yeah, i saw that sunken treasure show that was on a while ago and he was yelling at people for talking during his set. :)

and fanch, as for who they sound like...good question...they're kind of folk/country meets rock. tweedy is one of the best lyricists around right now, i think. some of the songs on the new album sound beatles-esque to me. you'll probably recognize the sound when you hear them, since they have six songs in VW commercials right now.

I understand this because this is a PJ forum (and thus the understandable bias that comes with that), but I don't see Vedder as this great front man. I mean yeah he's a great singer/songwriter for a great band, but he doesn't have much stage presence, IMO, especially these last several years.
