however, there is a reason ok computer is in the top 10 all time albums and vitalogy isn't
Well i'm thinking the concept behind OK Computer is what makes it so appealing to critics...but aside from that I wish somebody would tell me why OK is held up in such high regard musically.
All I hear is Yorke's highpitched wail and some nursery rhyme type guitar throughout the whole album...Don't get me wrong there are memorable songs on there but I find The Bends and Kid A a much more pleasurable listen.
Again I think the concept behind the album is genius...but musically it ain't that great.

No Code beats the shit out of OK Computer...one day the rock world will recognise this...

Quite alot actually. For one, Foxy Mop isn't really much of a song at all.
Yeh but neither is Treefingers ot The Gloaming...to name just a couple...but for some reason Radiohead's attempts are 'groundbreaking'...and Pearl jam's efforts are a mess...the price one pays for not being indy experimental rock darlings.

The Gloaming is certainly a song...and yes, the reason Radiohead are well-regarded for it is that they're much better at it than Pearl Jam and most other bands. I think it's hard to argue that Radiohead are much more of a studio band than Pearl Jam is, who typically turn on the amps, mike them and play.
I seriously do not get the love affair people have with Vitalogy. . . .
Whoa, I take that back!!
I just revisited the Vitalogy track list while trying to write this post and realized, aside from 'Pry, To', 'Aye Davanita', and 'Stupid Mop', the only song I can honestly say I didn't like from that album was 'Tremor Christ', and I'll bet if I went back and listened to it now, I'd appreciate it more now than I did then. And I've even sat and listened to 'Stupid Mop' more times than I'd care to admit. It does have one of my Top 5 or 7 all-time PJ tunes on it (Corduroy), so I'm gonna quit slamming that album this instant!
As far as 'The Bends', I also owned that album at one time, and honestly I can only recall 3 songs from the album. I feel cheesy for bringing them up 'cuz I'm sure they were all singles, 'High and Dry', 'Fake Plastic Trees', and 'Street Spirit'. The rest of the album I don't recall. I wanted to like the album more, I think because I was in college and felt like I had to like it more. I just didn't have the musical palate for it then. Again, I bet I'd appreciate it more today.
"We were but stones, your light made us stars . . ."
Looking back over the tracklists for these two albums, they are actually far closer than I thought. I said Vitalogy, but the Bends indeed does have killer song after killer song...Planet Telex, The Bends, High and Dry, Fake Plastic Trees, Nice Dream, Just, My Iron Lung, Bulletproof, Black Star, Street Spirit...I may have to take back my answer...this is one of the tougher musical comparisons I've been asked.

I don't know, It's subjective but for me the mood created on both Vitalogy and No Code are unbelievable...I just can't get over the fact that Pearl jam have created 8 records within the traditional bass, guitar and drums format yet still managed to push boundaries with their sound, whereas Radiohead have opted to totally shift to a much more electronic dominated sound.
I just think it would more difficult to do what pearl Jam has done, by that I mean pushing boundaries within that smaller scope, Radiohead have shown great versatility but are pushing a greater boundary, ie. the inclusion of electronica...yet many do'nt recognise this.
Could Radiohead have created 8 records that are totally different from one another yet remain within that traditional drum, bass, guitar format? Who knows.

Pearl Jam's records don't sound that different from each other, primarily for the reason you mentioned...they stick to the basic set-up. Pearl Jam's strength in the studio is being able to conjure a mood and atmosphere, from triumphant (Yield), to dark and unrelenting (Bianural), anger and frustration (Vitalogy), to inner peace (No Code). But I can't think of one album between Vs. and Pearl Jam where their sound has significantly changed...certainly not in the way Radiohead has. Their sound doesn't change cause the tools don't change.
In my opinion, Radiohead, just soundly has them beat in the studio. Live, I think Pearl Jam is better (although Radiohead is a close, CLOSE second place, albeit for entirely different reasons).

You may be right about having them beat in the studio.
But Vitalogy, No Code, Yield, Binaural and Riot Act are all totally different sounding albums...totally! My point is Pearl Jam do this (changing the mood and sound) using bass, guitars and drums whereas Radiohead do it using a totally different format.
It's harder to reinvent yourself by keeping the same format. But Pearl Jam IMO have done this.
Think "a builder creating a house with just the basics"... much more difficult to do as opposed to somebody with a vast array of tools to work with...

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree...PJ's albums are different in mood, but they're not that far removed in sound. Each song has their rockers, their ballads. Many of the albums (particularly Binaural, which I think still stands with No Code as their most experimental album) have individual tracks that go outside that zone...nothing like a complete shift like from Bends to OK Computer to Kid A...it's just different ways of doing things. But PJ have completely re-invented their style in the way Radiohead has...not many modern bands have done that as successfully...REM was able to do it a few times...take from Green-->Out of Time/Automatic to the People--->Monster/New Adventures in Hi-Fi--->Up.
I like Not For You, Corduroy, and Immortality better than any of the Bends' songs, but I can honestly say I've never listened to Vitalogy start to finish. I've listened to the Bends 100 times through. I think it is better than Vitalogy based on consistency and not having to listen to nonsense (bugs, stupid mop).
I say they suck and you all make it seem like it's impossible for anyone to hate them. Seriously, I have all their albums. I'm not talking about The Bends I'm talking about them as a band. "Kid A" and "Ok Computer" are not masterpieces. I'm tired of people acting like they are gods gift to the earth.
I cannot see how someone can put in Kid A (worst album ever created) and actually enjoy the disgusting crap that Thom calls a song. Just because he's rebellious against the mainstream music industry does not make him a genius, and it doesn't make the music good. And I am dead serious when I say Kid A is the worst and most overrated record ever created. It's just plain awful.
Okay now THAT was ignorant. But in my opinion they are terrible. That's possible you know, for someone to disagree.
i'm not such a great fan of radiohead post kid a.... i really think radiohead's music has matured after ok computer. i don't see why people don't agree with that but anyways.... i think i'll stick to vitalogy... although vitalogy is not my favorite album from pearl jam... it's either vs or yield.
This isn't the land of opportunity, it's the land of competition.

hey, dude it's just music. now go watch some porn....
but since i'm here i'll say this.... kid a is of course "noise" but it's beautiful noise. listen to my bloody valentine, listen to slowdive. listen to other great bands that were never really mentioned simply because they stood against the whole mainstream "idea". i never really read any good reviews of kid a, in fact... i had only listened to kid a when i was young at the time because the cover seemed interesting to me. the story goes like this... i first heard "creep" millions and millions of times. so i tell a friend, hey listen to this song, its' cool. he listens to it. doesn't like it. next week comes back with a cd named Amnesiac... he lets me borrow it. i listen to it, and my mind was literally under a state of aweness... i had absolutely never heard anything like it. sure you can call it noise. but c'mon, it's fair to say that music has no limitations man. there's so much music out there that we'll never hear, it's good enough that radiohead came out with a sound that was literally something else. in my opinion, your statement sounds like an old man griping about modern music... most comments such as yours give so many limitations to allowing afreethinker developing new sounds that push the boundaries of what we are used to listening to. i also recommend doves, as well as starflyer 59 and a spanish rock group called Cafe Tacuba... oh and the flaming lips too.

because the songs are incredible?
Brave to try to gamble at times
They're good but The Bends is better.

What's the difference between Foxy Mop and anything off Radiohead's last three albums. Not much IMO
well i'm not talking about radioheads last three albums I'm talking about the bends...

However, Radiohead's two albums after that top anything Pearl Jam has done in the studio thus far, if we compare total catalogues.

no...sorry but I'm talking about the bends retard
Whoah man...no maybe you took me the wrong way...I meant "Yes you are!" talking about the bends. It was my admission that "I" went off topic...
Sorry dude, now maybe you can say sorry to me !

GREAT POINT...lots of people forget that pearl Jam's ethic is steeped in a back to basics style...they're a rock band.
To me Radiohead ceased being a rock band when they began work on Kid A.
You can't compare the bands...two totally different methods of making music.

You obviously only know them from KID A onwards, The Bends is a masterpiece, I listen to it more than Ok Computer these days.
