Smashing Pumpkins - Zeitgeist

  • Consider this, what if it was a new band, their first record... does the album still suck then? I don't think so.

    I say yes.

    I hated it that much.

i have said it in other posts about Zeitgeist and i will say it again. i don't understand the hate for it. i admit i haven't listened to it in a while but there seems to have been piles of music that i like thats been pushing things through my ipod every 2 weeks or so.

IMO, Zeitgeist freaking rocked. it was heavy and loud and awesome. i don't know if its there second best, but i would place it above Adore and Machina. as much as melancholy blew them up and i assume would be your #1, i don't think its there best. it was very hit and miss. the hits were amazing but the misses were up to and including terrible. my favorites list would probably be as follows:

    Siamese Dream
    Melancholy
    Pisces Iscariot (HIGHLY UNDERRATED)
    Gish
    Zeitgeist
    everything else

honestly, like how people like to knock on pearl jam saying that everything after VS or Vitalogy is crap, i think thats what people are doing with Zeitgeist. Most people are probably pissy cause Darcy and Iha are not in the band so they all jumped on the same hate bandwagon to cry about it.
  • Siamese Dream is one of the top 3 albums of the nineties to me. after that its:

    2: zeitgeist
    3: melancholy
    4: the rest

Can you give us a reason for that? Fair enough if thats your opinion, but I think there's lots about Zeitgeist that make it a worthwhile release. Doomsday Clock, Bleeding the Orchid, Tarantula, JC's drumming for example. Strong overall album i reckon.

The songs are not catchy, no great melodies, the vocals are shit, alot of it just sounds like one giant jam session of hitting guitar strings as fast as possible, lacking the nice synth of other albums, it does not have any nice mellow songs (no that last crap song on the record does not count), the production is awful. To top it off they didnt even release more than one single (which was by far their worst single). That enough of a reason?

Here is how I rank the records (this was tough because these are all so good with the exception of Zeitgeist)
    Siamese Dream
    Mellon Collie
    Machina
    Adore
    Gish

Zeitgeist (its so bad I dont even want to put it near the other records)
    Alpine Valley 2000
    Summerfest 2006

  • the production on the copy of Zeitgeist i have sounds great, but i admit i've been listening to Pearl Jam's O'brien-less albums lately and everything sounds great compared to that shit.

I'd say the glaring difference between this and other Pumpkins albums is the lyrics, they definately aren't on the same level as Mellon Collie or Siamese Dream.

Did Mellon Collie even have good lyrics?

"God is empty, just like me."

    yea it has good lyrics

For the record, Billy and Jimmy were the only ones who really played on the albums anyways. James and Darcey were mostly just the for touring sake cause Billy did all the guitar and Bass on Siamese Dream. He's a control freak like Trent Reznor but I think they are both brilliant musicans

If that's the case, then why not call his solo album a Smashing Pumpkins album? Why even break up the band in the first place? He could have just fired James and Darcey and found two new musicians willing to put up with his bullshit. I am sure James and Darcey would have a lot to say if told they basically didn't do anything in the band. That would be a hysterical conversation.

But aside from all of that, it's Corgan that's the biggest problem on Zeitgeist. His vocals are atrocious (and I mean bad, even for him). He basically sounded like he didn't give a shit. Everything sounds apathetic.
It makes much more sense to live in the present tense.

All these people who say Billy did everything i dont think its true. Ive seen a lot of interviews and to my memory i remember billy saying that he didn't play everything :s but then again he could be lying and also the story on the vieuphoria therapy session actually has some truth in so maybe it was the case.

    hmm

I just felt zeitgeist was too perfect.. there was no rawness to it unlike all their other work and especially their live shows shows reflects this. Just listen to any 93 show and the passion and energy that goes into the performances is electric. Probably why i prefer live versions of pretty much every song rather than the studio.

    LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE this album.

    LIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT! BRING THE LIIIIIGHT!
Beavis: All my friends are brown and red? What does that mean?
Butthead: It means that his friends are like turds and that they like suck.
Beavis: Heh heh. Oh yeah. Yeah! Get those spoons out of my face before I shove them up your butt!
    Butthead: Huh huh.

James and D'arcy left! He replaced them with Jeff and Ginger, lol its not a solo album cause he still has Jimmy drumming etc. I understand it may be a band that you love or hate but to bash his vocals I dont understand because he has always sounded like that which is the allure of the Pumpkins.

Definitely the best song on the album, in my opinion. In fact, the whole album's really great except for "United States" and "Starz".

Are you insane? Mellon Collie has the least filler of any double album. I would take any one decent song from Mellon Collie over the whole Zeitgeist album.

Yeah the last album kind of disappointed me... I like the pumpkins, I do... I just kind of loath Billy Corgan at this point... I think he's kind of dramatic and a bit too theatrical... which now a days comes off kind of corny and a bit cheese.

Anyone see the new Watchmen trailer? I love that it has The end is the beginning is the end on it. here let me find it on youtube....

I cannot wait for this movie.... as a very big comic book nerd and Watchmen fanboy. lulz.

    Bodies
    Thirty-Three
    1979
    Thru The Eyes Of Ruby
    Stumbleine

Pretty good is an understatement. MCIS is classic.

Yeah, I love how they use that song simply to take a jab at shitty comic book movies...because he song was on the Batman And Robin soundtrack.

Still a cool song, and looks like an aweosme movie.

I really do think people underrate gish... its a fucking ace album. Every track just owns + live each song is just insane.. just like pj early 90s.. but imo better.

Replace Neverlost and Pomp And Circumstances with Stellar and Superchrist, it would be have been a far better album imo.

That last track kills me, it's like a bad Christmas song, reminds me of East 17's Stay Another Day :(

In saying all that, I still love the album.

Actually I'm well aware of how Billy layers everything....including his voice.

And it sucks on this album. His final vocal product is shit.

While I wouldn't say it's better than PJ, I will agree that Gish is a "fucking ace album." Lots of distortion and a lot of goth and pop influence help separate it from other Pumpkins albums.
