One of my friends wanted some songs off my ipod so I took his nano and hooked it to my computer and filled it with Pearl Jam. :)

I tried to get my ex-girlfriend into PJ for 4 years. She never got into them because she thought Ed's voice was annoying. But of course, lo and behold, after we split she tells me "I like that No More War song, I think I'm starting to like'em" FUCK....... ME!!!!
  • It's so hard.... I've tried to explain many people but they don't understand me and I accept it but the only thing that I expect from them is to respect my tastes (=respect pearl jam).
I remember months ago I stopped to speak with a guy cause everytime we spoke of pearl jam he laugthed in my face and told me unplasants things of them, since that day he die for me..

I never try to get anyone to like PJ. But sometimes my husband just keeps on me about how depressing they are so I was trying to explain that they aren't all depressing. I just thought it was kind of funny that I picked Dirty Frank as a fun song :D

I don't think I convinced him that it is.

I completely agree that everyone has different tastes. My cousins son asked me one day why do you like Pearl Jam so much(the kid is 6!) before I could answer he said I like Trent Reznor. So I replied why do you like Trent Reznor so much??????

I just wish my husband could get into PJ with me. I am almost embarrassed to post that he listens to 80s stuff. He thinks Night Ranger are one of the best bands ever :( I have to live with this :(

I've tried to turn a few people onto Pearl Jam by giving them some songs to listen, if they don't like them then that's cool and I don't persist. Nothing worse than a pushy fan who thinks that everyone should listen to their favourite band, and everyone who doesn't can not "see the light."

See I really try to remember this when I start in one someone who says something ignorant about PJ.

But here's my issue. If you're into quality music of any kind (and by that I mean, generally, written and performed by the individual/group and containing creativity/talent/etc etc), then you should at least give them a shot. I don't try to convince teeny boppers or rap fans, but I have a real problem with people who listen to good classic/contemporary rock not giving PJ a listen. They stick to what they remember from the early 90's (accurate or not) and then they shut down. Pearl Jam, at the very least, is a respectable rock band. If it's not your style, fine. But if you haven't heard their catalog, and you're going to try to tell me how awful they are, you've probably got an ear full coming.

Explaining PJ has never worked for me. Giving people my CDs and telling them to listen to them and look up the lyrics works all the time however.

When I went to California last month, I just told everyone I was going out for a wedding. It worked great until I showed friends my pics and they were like how come you don't have any pics from the wedding. ;)

But yeah, you're right - it's just easier to keep people thinking you're not crazy sometimes by not letting them know you fly and drive all over the place to see the band.

I, like many others, have attempted to spread the jam. Sometimes it has worked and rubbed off on folks, not to the magnitude of them buying all the albums and becoming a pit member though. ;) hehe
Other people just either 1) just don't understand the love for this band, or 2) don't enjoy them because of "his voice" or something silly like that! :P Fuck those dislikers!

I remember one time we were driving to Fredericton, New Brunswick to go see some friends of mine in university, and I popped in Yield. Listened to the whole album, and the girl in the vehicle said "Honestly bovy, didn't like that too much." I was crushed that she didn't enjoy Yield! Not even Given to Fly! Oh well, she's slowly coming around, she finally started liking a few, especially that 'big hard sun' song by Eddie. :D

I usually have PJ playing at some point when friends are over. I don't say a thing... Months pass. Friends hear more and more PJ while hanging out. Then one will ask a question about a PJ song playing again that they heard last time. BAM - I start them slow.. point them in the right direction...

Have tried in the past...still keep trying anyway. And yeah...I have the same problem with the bf and most of my friends...apparently. I think I have become really defensive about the band because of it ...then again "defensive" is probably an understatement. :p

Explaining PJ to people who don't know?

good luck with that one... ;)
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.

that's a huge mistake, thinking pearl jam is depressing. they have some of the most uplifting and inspirational songs ever.

    SO TRUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have given up explaining....people always think I am crazy.

However, there is ONE great analogy I came up with when people laugh at me for going to so many shows - esp. if it is a guy - I say:
"Do you like going to Yankee games?
How many games do you go to a year?
Why don't you go to just one?
Oh, because they are all different you say?
okay then, well that is why I go to 6 shows. Now imagine if the Yankees only came around every 2-4 years. Then they shut up :)

Why did you say "Christians", why didn't you say Muslims? They are ones that kill you if you don't convert.

That is cool that you loaded all that PJ on his iPod. I would have filled every remaining space with PJ.

haha, sweet, i might have to use that one time :) i think the reason people dont understand the whole "going to 6 shows in one week" thing is because theyre just so used to the mediocrity of other shows with the same set over and over with no rarities or anything us pj fans are spoiled with.

i got one of my friends into pearl jam, but you know what really sucks?
that they like a few songs, but they dont love music so it's like the songs they like, they dont "get". and i dont mean that they dont love pearl jam and that's what sucks, because not everyone in the world is going to love pearl jam, but my friend just isnt in love with music. she doesnt listen to her favorite song with her eyes closed, letting the melody wrap her up or letting the lyrics fill her like a drug. ive once felt so moved by how beautiful a song (light years) was that ive cried a little.

not only is it hard to explain pj to someone, but it's even harder to explain the beauty of music to someone who just doesn't get it.

I know exactly what you mean. These people talk over the best parts of the songs. :(

In Given To Fly when Eddie sings the line "The love he receives is the love that is saved" there must be silence! When he sings saved, it hits me right in the stomach. I just can't explain that feeling to anyone. Makes me sad for them.

Oh yeah, I can relate. I never cry. Not even when a loved one dies. What’s wrong with me? Lol. but there’s a few choice pj tunes that make me cry. It’s bizarre to me.

My old friend Matt hated PJ, especially Eddies. Then again, he thinks Poison is the best band, All 80's bands are his gods. Maybe this is why our friendship has gone down the tubes.

i usually get the weird looks from people who dont understand why i would travel to see the band. "why are you going all the way out to george, washington to see pearl jam in the middle of nowhere when you just saw them here?" or my new favorite " i dont understand why you are seeing the same band 5 times in a week, arent you going to see the same show 5 times?"
some people will never get it

That is so true!!! Most of my friends and family are flabberghasted @ what I'll work into my schedule to go see Pearl Jam...All I can say is.. ya just gotta go two nights in a row ONCE to freaking get it.. if ya don't want t(o go with me and share the experience (cause it's one of the most religious experiences one can have to see the band transform each and every night into something new AND AMAZING each and EVERY night), Then stay at home and watch TV..And let me enjoy what is great to me.. which is to share this great music.. this intelligent and beautiful music with those who love them too..It's straight up Synergy.. and I've missed it terribly these last tweelve and a half years..I'm gald I get to go again.

I took my husband to the VFC show in St Louis. Awesome show, awesome venue, he still doesn't get it. :(

Seriously he likes stuff that was big in the 80s. Eddie Money,Night Ranger,Van Halen, Sammy Hagar,Survivor, just stuff I consider lack luster no thrills plain music. I bet he likes Nickelback, I am going to ask him.
