Ever try to explain Pearl Jam to someone who just doesn't get it

I had this conversation with my husband, it went sort of like this.
Him: I like fun music, Pearl Jam is all depressing stuff
Me:Well some is but what about Dirty Frank?
Him: I don't know, have I heard it? What is it about?
Me:Well, a cannibalistic serial killer bus driver, but it's a fun song. :D
Him: (he just looked at me like I was crazy and said nothing)

I don't know if I convinced him or not.

If they don't get it I don't try to explain it.

that's a huge mistake, thinking pearl jam is depressing. they have some of the most uplifting and inspirational songs ever.
  • i managed to get two friends to come around to them. but it took months and years of annoying them with my music to wear them down.

i've tried, most times i've been successful, other times? meh lol

this reminds me of a quote by louis armstrong, when asked by a reporter to define jazz:

"If you have to ask what jazz is, you'll never know.”

one can only try so much to convince someone why PJ is awesome...you can make an effort, but in the end, if they still don't get it, they never will :)

What I usually do is email the friend in question articles about how good they are live, such as the Linkin Park article where they praise PJ... and things like that... it's worked well for me.

I just brought in a bunch of older boots (93-98) to listen to in my office and a co-worker says....
aren't the songs on thsoe a lot of the same songs? I said sure, a lot of the songs are the same with different versions and covers. He says, so those are just a bunch of cd's that are exactly the same thing.....I said no. He walked out and I had a pj day.

On a side note, I did recently get my '03 Alpine Valley poster framed...with black matting and a orange frame (if you know the poster you'll get it) and hung it in my office at work......I have recieved a lot of compliments on it from a lot of people that don't have a clue about PJ.

i usually get the weird looks from people who dont understand why i would travel to see the band. "why are you going all the way out to george, washington to see pearl jam in the middle of nowhere when you just saw them here?" or my new favorite " i dont understand why you are seeing the same band 5 times in a week, arent you going to see the same show 5 times?"
some people will never get it

It's like trying to teach a dog math, it's really really hard. I like to use Crazy Mary as an intro. Break out a couple bottles of wine, maybe roll something up, and blast maybe the SD 06 version. By the end I've usually got a believer or two.

That, or I'll wait til my roomies are a little toasted and not paying attention and I'll throw on a boot. Nothing spices up a party like live PJ!

I've had this conversation a lot in the last few months regarding Ed Ved, Black Keys, etc.. You either get it or don't I guess.

Now this made me laugh. It sounds like what I run into from "normal" people. Meaning the ones that aren't into music. Or I get, "Aren't you a little old to do that?" (I'm not giving my age.)

All the time unfortunately - they all tune out whenever I mention PJ or anything PJ related. It's okay it's their loss.
