Nirvana, Soundgarden, or Alice in Chains

For me its a tie between Nirvana & AIC. Soundgarden are good, but they come third.0

When it comes to the above mentioned bands I just cannot put Nirvana in with the other 2 bands. I am a huge AIC and SG fan as well as PJ. I have stuck to my roots as far as music goes in regards to such bands. I enjoy some nirvana but I was never really impressed or captivated by there music. I rarely listen to nirvana and have to be in the mood. I will listen to any AIC or SG anytime though.0

As amazing as AIC were ( and they f'ing ruled), SG all the way with Nirvana trailing behind somewhere. AIC had a wider appeal with there acoustic stuff( which is amazing.... Jar of Flies/SAP/Unplugged). SG being the more eclectic, original with there odd time signatures, and punk/metal fusion. Lets compare some of there albums. Dirt vs SU: Dirt is an amazing piece of work but very few albums from the nineties can compare with the opus that is SU. 16 songs, 66 minutes of pure bliss. Facelift vs Badmotorfinger: Battle of the metal albums. I think BMF has stood the test of time better than Facelift. Both opening songs are great (we die young/rusty cage), but advantage BMF. Tripod vs DOTUS: I would have to give DOTUS a slight edge for its diverscity, although it is tough to listen to either knowing that it is the last we would hear from these great bands. JOF/SAP/Unplugged vs Screaming Life/Ultramega OK/Louder than Love: AIC owns SG here! There best material vs SG early raw sound. This is where AIC garners there huge appeal and SG loses some people. SG early stuff is a mix of sludgy sabbath riffs mixed with a post punk sound. Oh and nirvana were no slouch either just not in these two league.0

Jeremy1012 wrote:well the voice is an instrument. If jimi hendrix was talented as a guitarist, Layne was talented as a vocalist (Love, hate, love live anyone?) but more than that, Layne wrote the majority of jar of flies' lyrics as well as most of tripod and some of the best songs on facelift and dirt. I always felt Kurt's lyrics were too disjointed and random.
Anyone can sham some arty, imaginative sounding lyrics which sound cool but mean very little. Layne meanwhile wrote songs like Nutshell and River of deceit, songs which penetrate into your soul. I'm sorry if that sounds melodramatic but it's true. I genuinely think that Layne's songwriting (as well as his singing) is vastly underrated. I mean this lyric from long gone day for example means everything in the world to me right now, given that I miss friends who I haven't seen in 7 months and now they are falling out and god knows when I'll be together with them all again. I've never related to Kurt like that.
from Mad season's Long Gone day
"who ever said
We wash away with the rain
See you all from time to time
Isn't it so strange
How far away we all are now
Am I the only one who remembers that summer
Oh, I remember
Everyday each time the place was saved
The music that we made
The wind has carried all of that away
Long gone day"
Good points. First off i have to admit that i'm not much of a lyric guy and a good riff or solo is all i need. And you're right that Layne wrote most of Jar of Flies lyrics (and i THINK all the Mad Season lyrics) what i was trying to say but didnt' actually say it clearly was that Kurt, to his credit, WAS Nirvana, in every sense that he could be. That's a big deal in my opinion. the rest of the band was basically just there because you need a bassist and drummer. Layne, on the other hand was just a part of what made Alice what they are. That's what makes Alice a better band than Nirvana, but i don't think it makes Layne infinitely better than Kurt.
Of course, I already said in the first post of this tread that I'm a bigger Nirvana fan but think Alice is a better band, so i guess i'm just repeating myself2000: Camden 1, 2003: Philly, State College, Camden 1, MSG 2, Hershey, 2004: Reading, 2005: Philly, 2006: Camden 1, 2, East Rutherford 1, 2007: Lollapalooza, 2008: Camden 1, Washington D.C., MSG 1, 2, 2009: Philly 1, 2, 3, 4, 2010: Bristol, MSG 2, 2011: PJ20 1, 2, 2012: Made In America, 2013: Brooklyn 2, Philly 2, 2014: Denver, 2015: Global Citizen Festival, 2016: Philly 2, Fenway 1, 2018: Fenway 1, 2, 2021: Sea. AIC, just on the lone song what the hell have I, best song in their catalogue in my opinion, nasty guitar work. Nirvana second and lip syncing chris cornell a distant third, he sounds horrible live when he is actually singing.NO TIME TO BE VOID OR SAVE UP ON LIFE, YOU GOT TO SPEND IT ALL!!!!!!!0

Nirvana. I love AIC but haven't gotten into soundgarden at all. Suggestions?Believe me, when I was growin up, I thought the worst thing you could turn out to be was normal, So I say freaks in the most complementary way. Here's a song by a fellow freak - E.V0

ALICE IN CHAINS!!! I love this band so much!! They are the only band that can compete with Pearl Jam in my book!!! Now Soundgarden, they're behind Alice in Chains in my book bc you gotta love Chris Cornell!!! His voice during the Badmotorfinger sessions had the power to blow up the world!!! As much as I love Nirvana and as great of a band that they were, they're further down my list, but they're still in my top 10."Darth Vader would say 'Impressive'."

soundgarden without a doubt... i love AIC, but no one can touch chris' vocal... and nirvanas good too... but yah... definitely soundgarden... i mean... come on... MATT CAMERON!0

Alice in Chains. Layne's voice was a gift. I still listen to Frogs and am haunted.
I do miss him very much. Will be sad when and if AIC re-bands with whoever.
STP would be number 2 for me.
Soundgraden would be 3.
Tool would be 4
Nirvana, way behind Hootie and the Blowfish, behind behind Helmet.
BAAM( OIIIIO ) It's about being able to go where most can't - Forget it, It's a Jeep thing!0 -
Soundgarden, definitely. I think Cornell is second only to Ed as the greatest songwriter of the last 20 years. At least in his SG days anyway.0

easy, Pearl Jam & Soundgarden are two great bands that will always last in my cd collection. Alice In Chains is my second option (awsome band) and nirvana at last. i dont like them that much.0

It's funny how you say what a great name for a band Soundgarden is because i've always thought that too. my friend however, stresses how great a name Pearl Jam is. Paraphrased: "Man, JAM is right in the title. Pearl....JAM. Like boom! we jam. ya know what i mean man? Pearl...JAM"
He really talks like that. keep your eyes open for him in places like Camden, NJ circa May, 2006. Keep you eyes open for me for that matter2000: Camden 1, 2003: Philly, State College, Camden 1, MSG 2, Hershey, 2004: Reading, 2005: Philly, 2006: Camden 1, 2, East Rutherford 1, 2007: Lollapalooza, 2008: Camden 1, Washington D.C., MSG 1, 2, 2009: Philly 1, 2, 3, 4, 2010: Bristol, MSG 2, 2011: PJ20 1, 2, 2012: Made In America, 2013: Brooklyn 2, Philly 2, 2014: Denver, 2015: Global Citizen Festival, 2016: Philly 2, Fenway 1, 2018: Fenway 1, 2, 2021: Sea. I think my sig shows my preference hehe...
I really sincerely miss Soundgarden.
My rankings would be SG, AIC, then Nirvana, and then Screming Trees right after that.
Mojo"A consistently good band works all the different elements well. A song has to appeal sentimentally, intellectually, physically, viscerally, and dig deep down into your soul and suck you into it. And after that, of course, it'd be a matter of taste." ~ Kim Thayil from Soundgarden0
