Still a masterpiece!!
OK do me a favour, listen to Soundgarden's Like Suicide, then Arms around your love, and tell me if you think the level of musicianship/lyrics/vocals are comparable. Seriously I desperately want to like this album I love everything he's done in the past, but there are a fair few filler songs on there, leaving it far short of a masterpiece.
I don't expect Soundgarden/Audioslave/TOTD part 2, but I would at least expect better lyrics than "can I visit your arms, can I visit your legs".0 -

We had the same discussion on another board and slowly I´m gettin´ tired of this, but ok, I´ll try to explain!!
You make the mistake to compare this album to his previews work, you cant do this, coz its 10-20 years ago!!!
This man has changed, so his music! I think how you feel in a moment, so sounds the music you make, or you are listening to!! If you are in bad mood you hear dark music, right?? But if you are in good mood you are listening to happier music!! Thats life!
But that dont mean that the next album is the same like this now, I think its a question of feelings and emotion.
Let me say it like this, you, no I can only speak for me, I dont wanna walk my whole life the same way without once looking right and left, if I would do it I wouldnt make any experience and so he does, he decides to go this way to try another music style and he did it great!!
He want to make another experience, not only sounded like SG, AS or TOTD till the end of time, he thought, its time for a changing and he did it, so what is wrong with it!!! The result is a great album and I told it so often, who, accept a genius can do such a jump between different music styles, this man is cult!!
I think you wont it eat every day the same, too??
Gosh, I hope you understand what I wanna say!! (I mean this, coz of my english)0 -

Okay. So he's made another experience. It's different from his previous works, yeah. But does that mean it's good? It certinally makes me respect him, as he's not going to churn out Audioslave/Soundgarden rehases for his entire career. But does it mean I actually enjoy the record? No, not really.0 -

No, I dont wanna say that all people have to like it because its different, no!! I can only speak for me and I like it, I also like the older stuff, but this one is exact a same special album like the others, you remember I only speak for me!!
You maybe dont enjoy it, but I do and many, many others too!! And no question about the respect, he gets highest respect!!0 -

Let me stop you right there, I have no problem at all with him changing styles, I loved Euphoria Morning and all it's different styles - what I have issue with is the QUALITY of songwriting. I'm not comparing it to say "hear how different it is, and he should be writing like that again", I'm comparing it in the same way I would compare any art.
To me, the album seems really rushed, a jumble of songs all thrown together, some great ideas for sure, but hardly any of it is truly realised.
I don't have an issue if he wants to do a more pop sounding record, but for me it's got to be decent, well written pop, not middle of the road pap that has no real substance.
There's loads of things that bother me about this record, like the fact that he's blatantly thrown No Such Thing in there to lure in Audioslave fans - despite the fact that the rest of the album sounds NOTHING like it, to me that's pretty calculating and cynical. Then there's the inclusion of You Know My Name, which was quite obviously tacked on to the end just to sell it to James Bond fans.
Strangely, I felt really at odds after seeing him live in London the other week, he sounds incredible, and clearly enjoys performing all his past music, so why make an album that's so unchallenging and well, blah?0 -

The reason for this you will never know!!!!
Maybe it is calculating, the last album is years ago!!! And maybe the family has made the change in his lyrics!! Maybe this is how he feels now, who knew, only he knows it!!
You cant compare painted pictures, if you see many pics from a painter, than you cant say, uuh, that pic is not like the other pics, so I dont like it! There its the same, a painter paints his pics how he is feeling and not because all must be the same, that would be boring and he wouldnt sell any pics, I dont know much about art, but I know I wouldnt like to have all the same kind of pics in my room!!0 -

Plenty of singers get past their angst and get married and settle down, and still manage to write songs that have depth. And why else would those songs be on there?Mo69 wrote:You cant compare painted pictures, if you see many pics from a painter, than you cant say, uuh, that pic is not like the other pics, so I dont like it! Yeah but this is the equivalent of him first turning in a masterpiece, then turning in a finger painting! Ok that might sound harsh, but he is capable of far better. The fact remains, nobody is going to be calling out for Your Soul Today over any of his classics from the past.0 -

I really shouldn't even bother responding to this...
But! What exactly are you hoping to achieve here, guy? Everytime you weakly insult me (or the thread starter) in this thread, you just bump it right back to the top. So hey - keep at it. I enjoy reading these Chris Cornell threads, especially when people like you get bent outta shape about it.
And for the record, I enjoy Carry On. Not quite up to Chris' usual standards, but as a rock album, it's above average at least, and better than Revelations.Smokey Robinson constantly looks like he's trying to act natural after being accused of farting.0 -

Not a single song on Carry On is as good as Wide Awake from Revelations.0 -

Maybe not - I love that song too - but as an album, I feel it's way more consistent. This is probably more to do with the fact that I grew tired of Morello's montonous solos than anything else. That said, I think the one song on Carry On that I'd contend to be up there with Wide Awake is Silence The Voices. I guess I just find the variety of styles on Carry On makes for a more interesting listen than the last AS album, which I found to be very similar to the previous two.Smokey Robinson constantly looks like he's trying to act natural after being accused of farting.0 -

I just think he was a bit over-reaching with all the different styles, at least Euphoria Morning's songs all sounded like they belonged on the same record, I guess I just feel that the album lacks identity.0 -

I still say that Cornell's best album for a variety of styles (and probably overall) was DOTU. And you're probably right that he was over-reaching. I certainly don't like every song on the album. Finally Forever and Poison Eye usually get skipped. But I think it better that he try a multitude of styles and succeed at most - arguable, I know, but that's my opinion - than continue making hard rock in the Audioslave stencil.
But you made a good point earlier when you said no one's gonna be calling for Your Soul Today at gigs. But no one's calling for Sound of a Gun either. Everyone just wants SG and TotD. And I'm cool with that - at least as a solo artist, he's getting to play those songs now.:pSmokey Robinson constantly looks like he's trying to act natural after being accused of farting.0 -

Yeah but there are a fair few Audioslave songs that are clearly crowd pleasers, like Cochise, Like a Stone etc. I'm certainly not giving up hope on him as an artist, I just wish he had taken more time with the record and crafted a masterpiece - which he is certainly capable of.0 -

I'd argue that songs like Safe and Sound, Billie Jean and even Silence the Voices will become crowdpleasers once everyone's heard them enough. But yeah, I get the feeling that now his pipes are back on top form, his next album will be one to watch, especially if he keeps his touring band. Maybe one of the problems with Carry On is the changing line-up?Smokey Robinson constantly looks like he's trying to act natural after being accused of farting.0 -

Totally agree, and those are my favourites from the new album, by the way! The band seem to have a lot of chemistry going on, so it would be cool if he keeps them on board and they record together.
I think a lot of my problem is that I saw him play the day before the record leaked, and he was really on fire, and the album just doesn't capture that energy at all.0 -

Yeah, as much as I like Billie Jean, the studio version is pretty tame compared to the live shows. The solution is obvious: live album, very soon.:DSmokey Robinson constantly looks like he's trying to act natural after being accused of farting.0 -
