Gordon Lightfoot's "If You Could Read My Mind"

http://www.ladyjayes.com/readmymind.html
Down the street you can hear her scream youre a disgrace
As she slams the door in his drunken face
And now he stands outside
And all the neighbours start to gossip and drool
He cries oh, girl you must be mad,
What happened to the sweet love you and me had?
Against the door he leans and starts a scene,
And his tears fall and burn the garden green

Speaking of the Pumpkins, Stumbeline has to be one of the saddest songs ever.

Nutshell by Alice in Chains. I defy anyone to watch that tribute video online with nutshell playing in the background the whole way through and not get a lump in their throat. Just try it I dare ya...

  • every rose has its thorn
just like every cowboy sings a sad, sad song. LOL
no additives, preservatives, or artificial colouring
  • Wow great to see someone nominate this song so soon in the sad songs thread. This song is one of the greatest of all time from one of my favourite artists of all time. Lightfoot has other great, sad songs such as 1972s "Ode To Big Blue" a song about a whale. I don't know why the public has largely forgotten Lightfoot he is one of the greatest and yet all I ever hear discussed is Neil Young and Dylan.
  • Seldom has anyone been more wrong ever! While I like the Studio 54 dance version it cannot even approach the heart-wrenching genius of the original. My God your comment is offensive, cheesey and wholly inappropriate!

i dunno about sad, but the Modest Mouse song "Broke" is incredibly depressing. So is the Steelpole Bathtub song "Friday".

prime time deliverance - matthew good band

also, sometimes certain ben harper songs can be way too depressing for me to handle if things aren't going so well.
    Which came first,
the bad idea or me befallen by it?

All My Little Words by the Magnetic Fields. It made me all teary eyed when I first heard it...

    You are a splendid butterfly
It is your wings that make you beautiful
And I could make you fly away
But I could never make you stay
You said you were in love with me
Both of us know that that's impossible
And I could make you rue the day
But I could never make you stay

Not for all the tea in China
Not if I could sing like a bird
    Not for all North Carolina
Not for all my little words
Not if I could write for you
The sweetest song you ever heard
It doesn't matter what I'll do
Not for all my little words

Now that you've made me want to die
You tell me that you're unboyfriendable
And I could make you pay and pay
But I could never make you stay
"All the strength that you might think would disappear, resolving..."

    Change - Blind Melon

One of the most up-lifting songs in my life.

Sad only for the fact that it contains the Prophetic lyrics:

"...and I know we can't all stay here for ever...so I want to write my words on the face of today"

Yeah, I guess it has that bittersweet quality for me, doesn't stop me listening to it though, love that song.

I remember hearing a performance (I think it was Letterman) when Shannon sang this line:

"And when your deepest thoughts are broken,
Keep on dreaming boy, cause when you stop dreamin’ it’s time to die...and I don't ever want to die"

That kind of makes me sad.
