Willie Nelson is such a bad-ass on guitar! He gets a lot of respect as a country music legend, but I feel he never gets his due as an amazing guitarist. He has his own, unique style and feel. The man transcends musical genres. He's almost his own genre. As a guitar player, he is one of my very, very favorites.
Also, I feel you never hear enough about Brian Setzer. He is so good, and has been for a while.
I don't think Robby Kreiger gets enough respect either.

Not really a lead guitar player but really created his own lane when he played - Michael Hedges. I saw him live about 10 times -- the consummate musician and entertainer. Listen to his version of Zappa's Sofa No. 1...or just about anything else he ever recorded.

I've always really loved Ross Childress from Collective Soul. When he was their lead he always played with so much energy and his style is AWESOME!!! Their new lead guitarist Joel Kosche is pretty good too. He has some really good slide work on their new album.
And yes, I second Alex Lifeson!!! Next to Mike McCready I'd say he's the best guitar player around.

Have we lost our way tonight?
Have we lost our hope to sorrow?
Feels like were all alone
Running further from what’s right
And there are no more heroes to follow
So what are we becoming?
Where did we go wrong?
mike campbell is so awesome
Alex Lifeson is usually overshadowed by Lee and Peart.
Al Jourgenson is better than many people think.
Doug Martsch is awesome.
Adam Jones.
Mick Mars is better than people give him credit for.

One of the best, and you've heard him and maybe not have known it.
He played with Frank Zappa,
Talking Heads, "Remain in Light" and on tour with them,
David Bowie, Peter Gabriel etc
Lately, NIN Downward spiral.
He and Robert Fripp playing together in King Crimson are out of this world!
A busy man he is: http://www.adrianbelew.net/discografy.html#producer/performer
Also,
Pat Martino is an amazing jazz guitarist. Also John Scofield. They're two more of my favorites

He has a big ego for a reason - heis very very talented, you dont even have to like any of his stuff to appreciate how musically gifted this man is.
