I figured it had to do with his health issues that were addressed in the sequel monologue.

It's a great damn song live (and the monologue sure helps it), but it does take up 10-15 minutes of the show. It may just be that Patterson doesn't want to perform the full thing anymore, complete with story.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

Hmm...I guess I haven't heard the sequel monologue.

I do love an extended version of this song...but I can see how it can get old to long time fans.

    ...sort of like "Evenflow"?

Seriously man. I like those spoken word intro's...if that's the version they're referring to, then I'm looking forward to it.

i'm guessing patterson's mom's husband died, rather than divorced, only because they were still singing 18 wheels to celebrate the guy less than a year ago, and the long version's story was about his failing health.

what happened to "fuck new west"? did they still owe them an album?

what the hell is this FAP giclee that Patterson's selling with murdering oscar preorders? is it just a fancy name for poster?

I think they did...thus, the b-sides and rarities album. Or, it could be that New West is releasing this without their blessing to get some money off album sales. When I heard Patterson speak of the album in March, he didn't sound exactly pleased about it's release.

They are free agents now looking for a label last I heard.

This is from the last show that I attended.

    http://www.archive.org/details/dbt2008- ... 481.flac16

You can stream the ~13 minute 18 Wheels complete with the sequel monologue in all it's glory.

Damn good show across the board. 18 Wheels, Lookout Mountain, Steve McQueen to end it out.

Well, let's not jump to conclusions, guys...don't you think Patterson would have had a few nice things to say about Chester in that last update, if he had passed?

if anyone is interested patterson's new solo album is being released next month. sounds like it'll be alot more upbeat than his last (it was keeper too).
check out his website for more info.
going to try to catch his screwtopians band in louisville if at all possible.

drive-by truckers have a 'b side' album coming out later this year and a real record coming out next year.

for all you dbt fans, check out jason isbell and 400 unit live if possible . just fantastic!

...and i think pattersons father in law is still around.

Yeah, it's pretty heavy. I can see why Patterson wants to retire it. Hopefully they keep playing 18 wheels though, even without the monologue.

  • I love DBT. One of my student's this past year is the cousin of Jason Isbell. I had them write a journal entry about meeting someone famous, and this kid wrote "My cousin used to be in a band called the Drive By Truckers but he left and they're not very famous." I got a huge kick out of that!

murdering oscar is really good, if anyone's been on the fence. much better than killers and stars. my first impression was that it sounds like his better blessing and a curse era stuff... little bonnie, goodbye, world of hurt.
