So I recently purchased a brand new computer, and now that I finally have a decent system I've been dowloading music and burning discs like crazy over the last few days. Today I logged onto iTunes and spent $30 getting the Hip's "Live 10" series. There's some fantastic stuff on there, particularly a killer version of "Apartment Song" from 1996. One of their most underrated songs in my opinion."I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."

3 more sleeps 'til Virgin Fest!!! This is gonna be a great day of music. The weather is looking like it's going to be gorgeous, and there are some fantastic bands on the bill: Constantines, New Pornographers, Matthew Good, Stars, and a bunch of others I can't remember at the moment. City & Colour might be worth checking out as well, if only for the possibility that Gord might make an appearance on stage with Dallas Green to sing "Sleeping Sickness":

Great show yesterday! The Hip were awesome as usual. The setlist was a little too 'greatest hits' for my liking, but hey, it's a festival gig, so I'm not complaining. "The Drop Off" is my new favorite live song. They really went balls-to-the-wall on that one. Gord was breaking mic stands like crazy. By my count he destroyed at least 5 of them, and handed one to a lucky girl in the front row. My favorite part of the show was when Gord took someone's hotdog bun and put both halves on his ears like they were headphones. Hilarious! As for the other bands: The Constantines were amazing, and City & Colour were better than expected. Stars bored me to tears, which was somewhat disappointing as I've always heard good things about them. Matthew Good on the other hand was excellent. It had been a long time since I'd seen him live, and I thought he was very good. Not to mention his band was top-notch. Looks like he's put on a little weight, but it suits him fine. I also caught a bit of the New Pornographers' set over on the B-stage and they were in fine form as well. Mr. Downie came out on stage twice earlier in the day. First with the Constantines to sing "Do What You Can Do", and then later with City & Colour for "Sleeping Sickness". The crowd went absolutely bananas each time he came out, causing Dallas Green to say "Maybe we should've saved that for the last song." All in all it was a fantastic day of music, the weather was beautiful, and the crowd was surprisingly well-behaved for a festival show. A couple of idiots tried to crowd surf during Matt Good and the Hip, but that didn't last too long. Needless to say, a great time was had by all.
Setlist:
Yer Not the Ocean
My Music at Work
Grace, Too
The Drop-Off
It's A Good Life If You Don't Weaken
Ahead by a Century
In View
Gift Shop
Courage
World Container
Long Time Running
Poets
Bobcaygeon
Springtime in Vienna
Nautical Disaster
Fully Completely
Family Band
New Orleans is Sinking
Lonely End of the Rink
Wheat Kings
At the Hundredth Meridian
Almost identical to the Belleville setlist the night before, except for a couple of songs."I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."

yep! just switch out 100th Meridian for Blow at High Dough....
Belleville was a blast as well!! The crowd was great, eveyone was having a great time.
Gord came out and sang one song with Sarah Harmer, which I got a great video of.
Gord only sacrificed one mic stand, which he also gave to a person in the front row, after wrapping the sharp end in a hanky and giving them a stern warning not to hurt anyone!
I'll get my pics from the show posted soon..... i got some great ones!~~*~~ ...i surfaced and all of my being was enlightend... ~~*~~0 -

I don't really get the thing with that city and color guy. The music is really bad. Well maybe not bad, but terribly mediocre. Seems like an odd choice for a guy of Gord Downie's calibur to do a song with. I heard he did a song with the Constantines, which is more like it, they are actually a decent band.0

Seein them next Thursday, Can't FUCKIN WAIT!!!Believe me, when I was growin up, I thought the worst thing you could turn out to be was normal, So I say freaks in the most complementary way. Here's a song by a fellow freak - E.V0

I don`t find City & Colour bad, just kinda dull. His songs are quite well-written if you listen to them, but they all sound too similar and seem to bleed into each other. There`s only so much angst-ridden melancholy a person can take. ``Sleeping Sickness`` is probably the best and catchiest song the dude has written, and that`s probably why Gord likes it. The story goes: When Dallas Green was writing the song, he couldn`t find a guitar arrangement he liked until he heard the Hip`s ``Thompson Girl``. He ended up borrowing part of the main guitar riff from that song, which worked perfectly for his lyrics. He figured since he blatantly borrowed from the Hip, he`d try to ask Gord to come down and sing on it, which of course he did.
As for the Constantines, I agree they`re an amazing band. Gord`s performance on ``Do What You Can Do`` at Virgin Fest was a beautiful moment."I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."

LOVE The Tragically Hip. Some people call them the Canadian Pearl Jam.
Poets live is great. Grace Too is my fav song!0 -
maybe they will finally capture their raw sound again like on "Fully Completely" and "Road Apples"..
or maybe we'll have to wait for the live versions of everything like last time.."This here's a REQUEST!"

Personally I think Fully Completely has the worst sound of any Hip album. It's a perfect example of a brilliant record tarnished by lousy production. Oh "Pigeon Camera", you deserved so much better! The album is way too polished, the guitars are too wimpy, and Johnny's drums sound like a plastic spork hitting mashed potatoes. I remember an interview that Rob Baker did a few years after Fully came out where he talked about how depressing the recording process was for that record, mainly because the band was never in the same room together and all the instruments were recorded seperately and then pieced together. He said the band prefers to record live together in the same room, and then go back and add the necessary overdubs afterwards. World Container definietly has that slick Bob Rock polish, but at least the guys got to play in the same room, and Gord gives the best vocal performance he's ever given in the studio. He really knocked it out of the park, especially on songs like "Lonely End of the Rink", "The Drop Off", and "The Kids Don't Get It". Having said that, I too am looking forward to a more raw sound for the next album. Most of World Container was recorded at Bob's studio in Hawaii, so perhaps the change of scenery and being at their home studio will result in a more live-off-the-floor sound. Regardless, I'm already drooling in anticipation of a new Hip album. Everytime they put one out, it's like Christmas."I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."
