I'm not actually looking for any matte. It's just glass/plexi on glass/plexi, surrounded by a solid frame (so yes, so I can see front and back, but also so I can see the entire poster floating). I am hoping to just be able to buy the frames and mount the posters myself, but more and more I'm suspecting that I'm going to have to go custom on this. :(
No problem.
You might be able to skip the mat & just use 2 pieces of plexi but I can't say for sure. I do believe the plexi is a lot lighter than actual glass so I do think it would be better especially if using 2 pieces. I would give the nice people at American Frame a call and see what the recommend or can do for you.
They will know a lot better than me!
Thank you for clarifying that. I didn't think you were suppose to have the print right on the glass & that you wanted to have the mat to help create that space but I wasn't 100% sure and I am definitely no expert.
And thank you for all of your helpful tips!3/22/94 Cleveland, OH

You don't need a mat to create space, you can by spacers that will do the same thing."Populated with every reject and cutthroat from Bombay to Calcutta. It's worse than Detroit."0

Finally got around to hanging my PJ Wrigley / Cracker Jack poster on the wall...

Double paned framing without matte is not that uncommon. It's often used for items like old documents/scrolls, where the whole thing with the edges and everything needs to be seen. The two panes are contained by a solid surrounding frame - the glass doesn't actually touch (although that is also an option). However, the back of the poster does have to be right against the back pane, which I'm fine with - should not cause any issues.

Makes sense, but is this true?
I took mine out of the tubes and they are hanging out now...
It's been suggested to me that even after flattening, keeping them rolled for too long can lead to an irreversible rippling even after framing... however, I don't know if that's really true, or if it only applies to shittier quality paper, or if that is just when you don't let it flatten long enough, or what. I am just hoping it doesn't happen to me or you!
I have 6-7 posters that have been in tubes for a few years. :fp: I think it's time to flatten those out.0 -

According to a framer, here is the best way to flatten and store a print.
1. Let it "rest" out of the tube for a few days or a week. Just let it naturally unroll a bit. Trying to flatten a poster right out of the tube can damage it.
2. Begin to flatten it by using bean bag weights on each of the corners. Let it sit like that for a day or two. If you don't have bean bags you can use small ziplock bags filled with salt.
3. Then, place the print (it should be getting close to flat) between 2 acid free sheets of foam core (available at a framing shop). Place some weight on the "sandwich" and let it flatten for a week or so.
4. Move prints to a portfolio0 -
Ok...with respect to all the sound advice above, I would like to share my way of flattening a poster which only takes about five minutes. I came up with it about ten years ago and it works perfectly. Someone else may do the same thing and may have already mentioned it but I haven't seen it here so thought I'd share.
Before I begin, I will say upfront that my method does involve rolling the poster counter to the way it got its memory but after doing this with well over 75 posters (my own, brother, sister and friends) of varying types of paper and ink, I can say I've never had a single problem (and I'm an anal mother fucker).
I outlined this on the boards in '06 and included pictures but I don't think there is anyway to find it now. Anyway, it's pretty simple. I start with an over-sized poster tube (much bigger in diameter than the ones 10C uses) and a large sheet of paper (usually the paper they ship in). Make an about a three inch fold at the top of the paper or just use the fold they've already made when they shipped it and tape the paper to the tube. Be liberal with your tape. (Fuck, this is hard without pictures.)
Now you've got the tube at one end and the paper lying flat on the floor with the flap (fold) facing up at you. Unfurl that fucking poster carefully (with a friend's help preferably) and wrangle one end under the flap. Make sure to get her all the way in there nice and snug. Also make sure you've put something on the other end to keep it flat on the floor. Now the whole poster should be upside down and flat on the paper with the image facing the floor. Start rolling the tube over the poster like a slow steam roller (be sure to keep it rolling straight).
Once you've rolled the whole thing up, tape up the over-hanging paper to itself. Leave it there for 5 or so minutes and open it up. If you feel some resistance while opening, tape her back up and wait a few more minutes. Try again and when there is no resistance, you'll have a totally flat poster with no cracks or warpage because you're not an asshole. You were slow and deliberate and used a wide enough tube to not cause much stress.
I hope this makes sense. Let me know if you try it! If you're nervous, I suggest starting with an Ames Jon Tester Missoula print if you haven't already used it to test Bradbury's understanding of fahrenheit.
Good luck!0 -
