I chose Dylan over Vedder

edited July 2008 in The Porch
I bought Bob Dylan tickets a couple weeks ago, I got 3rd row centre.
When the EV tour was announced last week I thought "ohhh boy" what to do.
Keeping in mind I am getting married next year and trying to save my money. If this was a few years ago I would have gotten the Dylan tickets plus the 2 Eddie shows.
So needless to say I opted out of the Eddie tix...if it was PJ it would have been another story but . . . . It's going to hurt the night of the shows but I'll survive.

I think Eddie would choose Dylan over Eddie, so it's all good!

I think they both skipped English/Effective Speaking class in high school to hang out with their music buddies in the lounge playing tunes.

That my friend was a horrible choice. Coming from a true Dylan fan, he is by far the worst live act I have ever seen. I never got to see him in his prime but I have seen him a handfull of times in the past 10 years. I actually left a show last year early and swore I would never waste $85 on him ever again. He is just flat out terrible.
If this was 1975 I would say go see Dylan (Yes I know Ed was just a pup). Believe me, he is worth seeing just to say you saw him live. He is an icon and the GREATEST song writer ever. But he won't be remembered for his past 10 years of touring. His studio albums are actually ok but when he sings those songs live it sounds like he just had a stroke 5 minutes before the show.

I had to go cheap with Dylan tickets, just bought lawn seats for $40 a pop. Not too bad, but if I had to pick, I'd go with Eddie... Dylan is an old old man

    Bad choice. Why?

Because Eddie is touring to support Into the Wild. There is no promise that he will ever tour solo again.

Meanwhile Bob Dylan is midway through his "I'll Tour Til I'm Dead" Tour.

If you could only choose one, it would be Dylan, but for this round I would go with Eddie and then catch Dylan on one of the next 39 trips through your city.

    Easy choice IMO.

I'm not just writing something negative because you chose Dylan over Vedder, but the truth of the matter is; the Dylan you are expecting hasn't been around for over 10 years. I've seen him a couple of times, the last time he was wearing a full white cowboy outfit with hat, studs and all at IU auditorium and it was awful!
Good luck, I just don't want you to be disappointed.

Dylan is the man but he sounds bad in concert. His voice is shot.

P.S. I've seen Dylan twice. Even took my 4 year old son, just so he can someday say he's seen THE GREAT Bob Dylan.

With that said, both shows were, OK. Nothing too special. I think the reason to see Dylan is so that you can say you saw him. The magic is not gone, but it is not strong.

Eddie's show is "Holy Shit" awesome!

Between the cowboy outfit and Dylan's propensity for being incoherent, it's almost like Don Imus is on tour!
  • I have to agree with those who say "bad choice". I saw Dylan last year... sorry man but Dylan is done :( He is still considered a hit or miss show, so I hope for your sake he is a hit that night.

i caught him on an 'off' night. he is one of my faves....love everything he's written...but the live act was painful. we were about two minutes into tambourine man before i even realized that's what song it was.

I saw Dylan at Chastain Amphitheatre in Atlanta a few years back and it was one of the worst shows I've ever seen. I like Dylan and was excited to see "the man" live and in person.. problem is I never actually got to see him. I had a front table on the left side of the stage and Dylan stood behind his bass/guitar player the entire time. He didn't come to the front center of the stage at all. He didn't play the guitar once it was all keyboards and he didn't even say "hello" to the crowd. At least not before I decided to leave 1.5 hours into the show. I'm glad my tickets were free!

I can't believe how many people didn't enjoy Bob Dylan over the last several years.

I love his act these days.

all i can say is thank bejeebus i didn't buy tix for the police august 5th. i had already purchased tix for their august 4th show - was initially scheduled to be their last - as an anniversary gift for my husband. then my sister just surprised me with tix to see the police on august 7th, NOW their 'last show ever' scheduled for MSG. so the police 2x and ed 1x all in the same week! :) just glad i didn't go for night 2 at jones beach, although i'd probably have resold those tix, NO way would i miss ed in my city! however, if i didn't have the polcie monday, you bet i'd go for ed 2x in NYC, but as it's hubby's gift.....that's that. :p

I saw Dylan in Feb 2002 for the Houston Live stock show and Rodeo. I had to take the opportunity to see Mr. Dylan (One of my fave artists ever) live. I just had to see him to say I saw him. I didn't have high expectations going into the show cause I kind of figured his voice is real hit or miss in the live setting. Plus, the sound in the Astrodome is terrible for acoustics so that was part of the problem too(when the band played some acoustic instruments.) The show was ok, but not great. He does re-arrange the songs musically quite a bit and trying to sing on key with the new arrangements is probably the biggest flaw with his show. However, I know that Dylan only entertains himself when he plays live so I also take that into account. The band screwed up "Lay Lady Lay" so bad, that Dylan had to wing a verse. They should have just started the song over. Other than that I'd give the show about a B minus. My Parents would beg to differ. My mom swears to this day that Dylan was "stoned out of his mind" and was just awful. I laugh every time she says that cause well it is Dylan after all. ;) Dylan never talks to the crowd from what I have gathered. I have a friend who has seen him like 15 times.

Having seen both in the last few years, im quite happy to have my Ed tickets.

Im sure im more than just a touch biased....i like a number of Dylan songs, but he's no Ed to me....but the one time i did see him (the tour he did with the Foos accoustic) was just dreadful.

I know what you guys mean...I should have stated a few things.
If I would have known Eddie was going on tour, I would have chosen Eddie. BUT I was at my computer when I heard about the Dylan show, went on ticketmaster and 3rd row centre came up. . . "what the hell" I thought.
I saw Dylan about 10 years ago, ehhhhhh not to good, but I have really been getting back into him a lot lately. I know about the re-arrangements and the voice but I really wanted to see him again probably for the last time.
Oh, the Eddie show is a week before the Dylan show.
    Ah well. . .

you go to concerts hoping to hear near perfect renditions of album tracks?
    that's just weird...lol!

i happen to love the fact that it sometimes takes till ya get to the chorus till ya realize what song it is! ;)

dylan over eddie? eddie would win but that's only because i've never seen him play solo and i've seen dylan 12+ times...having said that if you have never ever seen dylan play, then the decision should be REAL CLEAR :)

Eddie live will definitely be the better show but I still think Dylan's live show is pretty sweet.
Seen him 3 times, 1st in '98 with Joni Mitchell when I was 14 and i almost cried from wasting all that money on it, but that was bc I was a youngster who had only been to a few concerts prior and was expecting studio-like versions of songs.
Needless to say the other couple of times I saw him (with Phil Lesh and Foo Fighters, respectively) were great. I will definitely see him again when he comes back to town. Just don't expect anything close to a studio version of anything.
Someone tell me I'm not the only one who listens to Dylan boots from the last few years. I don't know anyone else who does...
