Slash Sucks

Yup you heard me correctly.
After reading an interview about how he worked with producers to create his "infamous" solo's (not just arrangement, but note for note solo's to make them as catchy as they are)

Sure he may be good at bending his notes and few quick licks BUT there is an extreme lack of originality.

I walked out of the Velvet Revolver show at the Borgata in AC on Saturday due to his crappy playing. (I had free tix, AIC opened up, and I have complaints on Sean Kinney's terrible drumming .... standing up holding his sticks out and dropping one by accident due to his drunkeness....)

Anyway....let's see....Slash...

Every single song, every single lick, and solo is note for note the exact same on the cd. Oh yea, and he would miss some of those notes while solo'ing too. He put his guitar over his head and strummed a chord for about a minute... so much for showmanship ... Before their song "Set Me Free" it starts with a Slash solo and he would just miss a ton of notes, like playing Guitar Hero on expert and missing all the licks, he got that sound!

I'm expect some fightin' words from some of you, but does anyone agree with me?

I think he's good, just not the apparent "legend" everyone seems to make him out to be.

Say all you want about Slash but Sean Kinney is a seriously awesome drummer.

So you think you can push some pretty buttones on a Playstation console, and that makes you a guitar hero, so you can hack on Slash.

We all know Slash is a boozer and a druggie and hardly a boy scout. Lotsa people like to hear the solo they are expecting.

What's your point ? Everyone works with producers in studios to refine their stuff and make it as good as they can. Young bands benefit hugely from this. So listen to punk if you want music anyone can write.

I was about 10 feet from Slash a couple days ago at the Camden show, and he seemed fine to me. The solos were NOT note for note. They did resemble the album cuts more than someone like Mike McCready's solos do, but he's never been big on long improvised solos his entire career.

But that's how I feel. By the way, he is probably the greatest riff-writer of the 80's.

wow someone is negative. it is without a doubt both slash and sean have tramendous talent. i saw aic/vr in ct and the show just absolutely blew me away along with a bunch of other people. got great reviews too. i thought slash was great, and not note for note. slash has always had great guitar playing skills, whether you like it or not. to walk out during the concert is just absurd. fucking ridiculous. aic was amazing too.

James Hetfield, ugh. Never been a Metallica fan personally.

Not all of GNR's riffs were Slash's (Mr. Brownstone wasn't his), but most of the best ones were. Sweet Child intro, Estranged, Coma, Welcome to the Jungle, etc. etc.......

you had to have seen how drunk sean kinney really was. Missing beats, missing fills.

And as expected, a lot of slash fans here apparantly. To walk out on a VR is not absurd as it is 2 groups past their prime combined into 1.

Mediocre Rock Music = Velvet Revolver. What is so over the top with them? Wow, they have Scott Weiland (whose voice was about 2 steps below the rest of the guys when they did the STP songs) and GnR (Duff is the only respectable one)

One thing that cracked me up was Slash's double neck guitar for Patience. There was no need for it but it was funny. Duff had ample time to switch from acoustic guitar to bass, so slash had enough time to switch from acoustic to electric, but it was just funny.

free tix....and i'd say the event center was about half full too. The floor seemed crowded (not overly packed like when PJ played) and the risers were practically empty

I'm always surprised when someone likes PJ but not Metallica. Try the Loads.

I was thinking of Izzy Stradlin, people are alwys saying he was the driving force beind GNR riffs.
Personally, I like Slash for the good stuff he did. His tone and feel were amazing, and he makes me want to play all the time.

I couldn't agree more. One of the greatest guitar tones of all time.

I saw Slash towards the end of touring for the first VR album, and he was pretty spot on, but he has always had a pretty loose style. What I have always loved about Slash is that he can flat out shred but it still doesnt sound like a robot crankin it out.

If Slash sucks, we should all be so lucky as to suck as much.

I saw VR last year at the mid-state fair in california and slash's solos were far different then on cd. Like the extended 6 minute solo he added into set me free. Slash IMO is incredible. Tone, presence, riff's everything. Izzy wrote a lot of the music for GNR, but no more then slash did. Every member of that band had a large part in song writing.

I know they come from different decades, but IMO slash is the second greatest riff-writer of all time behind Joe Perry

  • yea the 6 minute solo before set me free was more like a minute and a half of coughed up notes and slight note bending at the show in Atlantic City

Oh by the way, what VR did with Sex Type Thing was AMAZING... Duff was playing the main riff on his bass while Scott went on a little spoken tangent. Slash was putting in all these atmospheric effect fills and Matt Sorum drove it with this awesome slow, steady drum beat before they all went balls out and slammed into the full speed song again. Definitely one of the highlights of the night. They did a similar thing with Slither to close the show, which was also great.

  • First off to say Slash sucks is too strong. He may not be as creative now as he was with Guns N Roses, but if you were to poll the guys you consider to be " Great " guitarists, they would show you nothing but respect for Slash and what he has created. His tone is amazing and his solos in Gnr rank up there with some of the best in rock history. I think Velvet Revolver kinda sucks, but that should'nt take away from what he did in the past.

You quoted MLC2006, and he was saying Hetfield was the greatest riff writer of the 80's. And he was. One of the best, if not the best. Mustaine had nothing to do with that.
If you want to go on a Metallica suck rant and Dave is the greatest. Start a thread already.
