Voter ID

And a passport is not required. Thats one of the false narratives I keep see popping up. A passport is just one of several documents needed. It's also probably the most difficult and expensive to get, which is why it's always used as the example. But there are easier and cheaper options than a passport that are offered.gimmesometruth27 said:
this is a very black and white way of looking at it. doesn't take into account if that save law passes, if you do not have a passport you can't vote. does not take into account the need for a birth certificate to get proper id. does not take into account that a married woman would have to get special documentation since their married name does not match their birth certificate, does not take into account the purposeful reduction in the amount of voting machines in the poor community forcing long lines and people having to potentially take off a full day of work. does not take into account trump trying to outlaw vote by mail.mace1229 said:

the problem is not with "voter fraud". it is with republicans deliberately trying to disenfranchise groups that vote democratic.
But I'll repeat that I don't agree with the save act either. Just pointing out that needing a passport isn't accurate.0 -
Getting people that are disconnected to show up at the polls is not really a great thing IMO unless they will put the time in to be an educated voter.Tim Simmons said:I mean, the real issue that needs to be dealt with in terms of voting is why don't we have more people getting involved in the process? (what is it, like only 50% vote? terrible) THATS worth spending time on. But its the inverse of the reason why Voter ID is an "issue" today. They like having people stay home and not participating, wheras this SAVE act is to keep more people away from the process.
The less people that participate, the more it is easier to maintain the status quo.
Looks like in Nov 2024, 73.6% of eligible voters were registered to vote and about 89% of registered voters actually voted.

I never said that, they definitely do.Tim Simmons said:You can’t fathom that people like that exist?
I'm just agree with Tempo, and are probably not a big part of the voter demographic. They probably have a lot going on, are struggling in their lives, and voting is probably not a priority. Probably not turning out in large numbers to the polls.
And if they wanted to, most states or counties offer support to get a basic ID. It might take a little effort and help from a social worker, but a basic ID is either very cheap or free.
Claiming a basic ID (not a passport) is going to prevent a mass number of people from voting is probably as big of an issue as voter fraud itself is. Thats why the majority of the country is okay with basic ID laws for voting.
I believe in many states you can use an old W2, a utility bill, SSN card, sometimes even old school or hospital records to get an ID for those having trouble getting other documents. Many states have financial fee waivers as well.0 -
Most states have financial assistance to cover the minimal cost of an ID, and also provide resources to assist in obtaining it. Poverty shouldn't be a reason someone doesn't have an ID.HughFreakingDillon said:

Thats why the Voting Issue we should be tackling right now is getting more people to turn out rather than coming up with ways that prevent people from voting.mace1229 said:

But I understand you don't back the SAVE act. I'm just saying, The obstacles or the reasons why people don't vote are a more critical issue to overcome rather than an imaginary threat of people who shouldn't or can't who do. Its great that everyone thinks we need an ID to vote, but that fixes a problem thats not real while letting a real problem that lingers unaddressed or at least under addressed.

If the game for politicians is to game voting so your side wins, wouldn't it be better to bring more people into the process to get more votes rather than suppressing votes so you can slightly win?

I don't think that is accurate. I see estimates as low as 2-7 million that don't have any form of government ID. There may be 20+ million without a driver's license, but there are other forms.Halifax2TheMax said:mace1229 said:

But I can try and guess to answer this question. Some are homeless, yes. Some may be a spouse and do not need ID in their day to day lives because their significant over covers those areas. Many are probably 18-19 year olds who are not driving at a record rate right now and are living at home, so they have never received an official ID. 40% of 18 year olds don't have a drivers license, double from a few decades ago, so I am guessing a large portion of that 7 million are probably old teenagers who are still in high school or just graduated and ar living at home and have never had to get a bill in their own name.
My point was, if you want an ID, you can get one. Most people who haven't bothered to get an ID are probably the same ones who don't bother to vote. If you work legally, you have what you need to get an ID. Most places will take a W2 or tax return to get an ID if you don't have the other forms. As mentioned social workers can help and there is financial waivers for those who can't afford the $12. There really is no reason to not have a basic ID unless you just don't care to have one.Post edited by mace1229 on0 -
There are reasons beyond just apathy. Maybe you don't have transportation. Maybe the DMV hours don't work with your work hours and can't get them off to go. Maybe you never had a SS card or birth certificate because your parents didn't take care of those docs. Maybe you don't trust banks because historically they took advantage of people like you. Maybe your credit isn't good enough for a card.
There are hurdles. Yes, maybe you have to put in the work with some added expense and time. But also if its so essential, shouldn't it be easy to get with minimal hurdles?

You still don’t get it and yet, seemingly support a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist. You also tried to minimize the issue by saying it’s “just the guy under the dock that doesn’t have ID and they’re probably not voting anyway” or words to that effect.
Getting an “ID” is not the same as proving citizenship in order to vote under the SAVE Act. The repubs are requiring that you prove citizenship in order to register to vote.
Acceptable methods include providing a passport, an original birth certificate or a REAL ID, or government issued ID with a birth certificate or naturalization papers, all of which, if you don’t have, which you now admit may be in the millions, you won’t be able to register to vote. You’ve also previously stated that “some” states provide aid or monetary assistance to avoid what amounts to a poll tax. Please link to said states and the process. I’m sure it’ll be an easy-peasy, no hassle process for anyone not living under a bridge to navigate.
Yea, probably “old teenagers”, sure.
About 12% of registered voters do not have ready access to the types of documentation most likely to satisfy federal documentary proof proposals, such as a passport or a birth certificate paired with a photo ID. That equates to 28.4 million voting-age citizens.

I wouldn't mind the ID/citizenship showing for voting just so I never have to hear about this being an issue ever again.
Call me living under a rock if that is a thing.
voting should be free and easy for all citizens.
the problem is not with "voter fraud". it is with republicans deliberately trying to disenfranchise groups that vote democratic.

2) Get a job
3) Open a bank account/apply for a credit card
4) Buy a home/rent an apartment
5) Vote
Of all the else things, voting is by far the least important. Yet I never hear democrats talk about helping people that don’t have IDs to get IDs. Because if they solved that problem (if it is in fact a problem), then there’d be no reason to be against voter IDs. id.me , feds and states use as verification for websites and services online. cant recall how they verify but they take existing info and link it to a person if memory serves.cincybearcat said:I have the solution....tie it to cell phones. Everyone, even the homeless has a cell phone.

democrats are not against voter id. they are against the roadblocks republicans put in place to voting. but of course it seems by your example you've bought into the fact that means dems are against voter id. they aren't. if R's agreed to ID being free and roadblock free, I guarantee you majority would vote for it.Ledbetterman10 said:

Without ID you can't legally drive, have insurance, have a checking account, get a loan, rent an apartment, get a credit card, get utilities....
Where are all these people who struggle to do any of this? You can't live an adult life without basic ID.
Sure, maybe some homeless guy living under the pier gets by without it.....but I probably don't see him lining up at the polls either.
you do not need an id to get utilities turned on. all you do is call them and they come turn it on."You can tell the greatness of a man by what makes him angry." - Lincoln

republicans keep cutting things like that. that is why they are implementing these voting laws. to keep people from voting them out.mace1229 said:
Most states have financial assistance to cover the minimal cost of an ID, and also provide resources to assist in obtaining it. Poverty shouldn't be a reason someone doesn't have an ID.HughFreakingDillon said:
