Nassau Has Risen

Zohran Mamdani's historic victory as New York City’s mayor, making him the city’s first Muslim and youngest mayor in over a century, has been hailed as a major win for the Democratic Party’s progressive wing. Capping a stunning ascent, Mamdani's  victory delivered a strong mandate for change within the five boroughs.

The GOP's Grip Tightens in Long Island's Local Contests

The celebration of the progressive victory in New York City, however, is contrasted by a different story unfolding just outside the city limits on Long Island. In key local, non-federal races across Nassau and Suffolk Counties, Republicans demonstrated considerable strength, reinforcing the region's rightward shift, in what once was a battleground swing region.

The most closely watched contests, which served as a true barometer of the suburban political climate, were the county executive and county legislature races, where Republicans largely prevailed, undermining the narrative of a Democratic wave.

Nassau County: A Sweep of Top Offices

In Nassau County, Republicans successfully defended the county’s most powerful positions:

 * County Executive: Republican incumbent Bruce Blakeman secured a second term, defeating his Democratic challenger by a comfortable margin.
 * County-Wide Offices: Republicans also retained control of the County Comptroller and District Attorney seats, completing a sweep of the major county-wide offices.
 * County Legislature: The GOP maintained its majority in the Nassau County Legislature, signaling deep, institutional strength at the local level.

Suffolk County: GOP Dominance Endures

Suffolk County also saw Republicans solidify their power, particularly in the legislative contests, though not without a few Democratic bright spots:

 * Legislature Majority: The GOP maintained control of the Suffolk County Legislature, successfully defending most incumbent seats.

The results confirm that while New York City embraces a progressive, leftward trajectory, the neighboring counties of Long Island are continuing their rightward shift in local politics. This geographical divide highlights a profound electoral disconnect, with the suburban desire for lower taxes and enhanced public safety proving to be a winning message for the Republican Party in critical county-level elections. The outcome ensures that the new progressive leadership in NYC will be immediately balanced by a strong,  entrenched Republican government next door in Nassau and Suffolk, with strong ties to the Republican White House machine.

Our county has repeatedly elected a right wing nimrod to congress, but to be honest, not many people in neighboring Sacramento county (as in California's capital city as well) gives a shit.

This doesn't mar nor diminish Mamdani's huge victory.  But nice try, I guess.

Long Island is NOT NYC.  Never was.  The people on Long Island like the things the way they are, don't want change.  I get that.

Jose is also right where there are a lot of MAGA on Long Island.  That's the blight on the areas.

Mamdani won his position by buying votes.  He offered free things and the people responded with votes.

The reason I want to leave NASSAU is the costs and the amount of people.  Once grand properties are being knocked down and made into multiplexes.

We have city folk buying up summer homes where I live rather than in the Hamptons because it's 1-1/2 hours closer.  I live on a block where half the residents are gone in the winter.

Fun times, eh? And what did the cats do to earn such scorn? Oh right, turned all those grade school kids into mirror images of themselves so school budgets were devastated by the purchase of litter boxes and kitty litter. How could I forget such a divisive campaign issue? Sssssssssss, rearowe, ssssssssss!

George Santos, the disgraced former Republican member of Congress recently released from jail after Trump commuted his seven year sentence, reserved his ire for Curtis Sliwa, the defeated Republican candidate in the New York mayor’s race, who won 7.1% of the vote and criticized by some for drawing support away from Mamdani’s main independent challenger, Andrew Cuomo.

“Fuck you @CurtisSliwa. I HATE YOU, your dumb wife, that stupid Beret of yours and all your fucking cats!,” he wrote.

The point is, the MSM narrative yesterday about the election is a lie, Dems did nothing outside of solid blue regions...the GOP did fine outside the blue base. Joses point is the usual lazy political analysis, which is what we get often on forums like this. Not that long ago Dems were competitive there.

Not that long ago the LI congressional map was 4-1 Dems.

when Obama had solid majorities in congress, he won LI, and Dems were very competitive here.

when the speakership flipped just three years ago, NYC suburbs, not only  LI, was the difference for the GOP.

and come out to Suffolk, slightly less expensive and some nice exurban areas. I wouldn’t mind retiring on the north fork, a gorgeous region that could fool some to think they are upstate, but with plenty of bay and sound beaches. But that comes with cost.

the two counties compared to the largest cities it would rank between LA and Chicago. It represents a lot of voters. Yet was completely ignored by the media yesterday.

dems are masters at misunderstanding basic politics. This a a region they used to win and have to be competitive in places like this, not ignore it.

Dems won higher-profile elections. I don't think the response of it being a big day for the Dems is a lie necessarily but it's an overreaction. Pretty much everything happened in blue states in the eastern time zone; maybe a purple state or two...

The Dems are still RC (as opposed to Pepsi) to the GOP's coke. Trump would still win a third term if the election were held today.

You are free to ignore my earlier points that Dems used to win here recently, and the US speakership flipped because of the NYC suburbs just three years ago. But everyone decided to focus that there was no red wave in 2022, ignoring where and why the Dems are losing voters.

TaxDanny won 50% of the vote in a city that is 70% dem, while right next to him, Rs are stronger than ever in a formerly blue region . Believe whatever truth makes you happy.

lol Smithtown has always been strong R , im sure you remember Vecchio ran it for decades. He used to coach in my bball little league when I was a little one and PJ wasn’t even a gleam in mamasons eyes…and he was town supervisor back then!

but LI on a whole was very competitive recently. Lee Zeldens congress seat, before he became a cabinet member was held by Dems for close to twenty years.

Suburban realtors have seen an increase in New York City buyers, often referred to as the "Mamdani effect," which has been driven by concerns over potential policy shifts following the NYC mayoral primary. This influx of buyers has led to a surge in demand and competitive bidding, particularly in areas like Westchester County and Connecticut.
    • Increased demand: Real estate agents in the suburbs report a significant uptick in interest from NYC buyers, with some calling it a "steady rising market".
    • Motivation: Many buyers are motivated by potential changes in city policy related to taxes, public safety, and livability under the leading mayoral candidate.
    • Competitive market: This new demand has created a highly competitive environment, with homes receiving multiple offers and selling quickly, often at or above asking price.
    • Geographic focus: The trend is most evident in areas close to NYC, such as Westchester County, NY, and Greenwich, CT.
    • Data: County-wide data shows a substantial rise in contracts for single-family homes, especially for those priced over $1 million.

If taxpayer funded services are free things, then that means all politicians are offering free things. Republicans in the burbs won because they offered free public safety.

Meh. Realtors want to feed a political narrative with anecdotal evidence. The population of NYC has been increasing since the pandemic and rent it still out of hand.
