Israeli President Herzog on Wednesday responded to a request from President Trump that he grant a pardon to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu related to the latter's trial for alleged bribery, fraud and breach of trust.

"President Herzog holds President Trump in the highest regard and continues to express his deep appreciation for President Trump's unwavering support for Israel, his tremendous contribution to the return of the hostages, to reshaping the situation in the Middle East and Gaza especially, and to ensuring the security of the state of Israel," the statement by Herzog's office said.

The humanitarian and field situation in the Gaza Strip remains dire as the Palestinian Ministry of Health reported on Thursday that two more Palestinians were killed and five others injured in the past 24 hours amid ongoing Israeli violations of the ceasefire.

One of the latest victims was recovered from beneath the rubble, the ministry said, warning that many bodies and injured individuals remain trapped in destroyed neighbourhoods. Ambulance and civil defence teams have been unable to reach them due to continued shelling and unsafe conditions.

According to the ministry, 260 Palestinians have been killed and 632 injured since the ceasefire came into effect on 11 October. Rescue teams have recovered 533 bodies from destroyed locations during the same period.

This brings the total death toll from Israel’s offensive since October 2023 to 69,187 Palestinians, with 170,703 injured, amid what health officials describe as a near-total collapse of medical infrastructure and dwindling rescue capacity.

On the ground, Israeli forces have continued to violate the ceasefire agreement, carrying out airstrikes and artillery fire on several areas, including Beit Lahia, eastern Gaza City, and Khan Younis. Troops also demolished homes in eastern Khan Younis, while artillery targeted Al-Zanna northeast of Bani Suheila. Heavy gunfire was reported around Al-Shakoush, northwest of Rafah.

The U.N. estimates that at least 1.9 million people were displaced during the war in Gaza. One of them is Shahd Shamali, who was given just 20 minutes to flee her home. Mohammed R. Mhawish recounts her experience, with illustrations by Rama Duwaji. https://newyorkermag.visitlink.me/R9Vsjr
