Ahhhhh, remember when there were posters who scolded those of us for comparing CCOOTWH to Nazis and claimed, “it could never happen here?” Remember? Ahhhh, the good old days. From Letter From An American;
The apparent plan of the Trump administration reflects the strategy of Nazi political theorist Carl Schmitt, whose writings seem lately to have captivated leaders on the American right, including billionaire Peter Thiel and the man who influenced him, Curtis Yarvin. Schmitt opposed liberal democracy, in which the state enables individuals to determine their own fate. Instead, he argued that true democracy erases individual self-determination by making the mass of people one with the state and exercising their will through state power. That uniformity requires getting rid of opposition. Schmitt theorized that politics is simply about dividing people into friends and enemies and using the power of the state to crush enemies. As J.D. Vance described Schmitt’s ideas in 2024: “There’s no law, there's just power.”
Much of Schmitt’s philosophy centered around the idea that the power of a nation that is based in a constitution and the rule of law belongs to the man who can exploit emergencies that create exceptions to the constitutional order, enabling him to exercise power without regard to the law. Trump—who almost certainly has not read Schmitt himself—asserted this view on August 26: “I have the right to do anything I want to do. I’m the president of the United States. If I think our country’s in danger—and it is in danger in the cities—I can do it.”

It feels like it was Civil War 2.0 and the south won this one without a fight. I guess they were playing the long game.
0 -
I don't think the south "won" anything. if anything the current environment hurts them more in the long run.
If anything its the cynics, grifters and opportunists that are currently winning.0 -
unless you are just talking about the Sports-ness of this. Then sure, I'm certain they think their team won.

If you try to debate something outside of the accepted ultra left orthodoxy, you get mocked. If you say take responsibility for your election losses and try to find a better message and do a better job making that argument to voters, you get mocked and not taken seriously.

Dems had legislation and a message. Stupid fell for “they’re eating the cats. They’re eating the dogs. They’re eating the pets of the people that live there.” I’m holding stupid accountable because if you were paying attention to any degree, it should have been a no brainer as to which party and candidate had ‘murica’s best interests at heart. But with stupid, there are no, no brainers and no amount of messaging is going to break through that stupid bubble.
You know how stupid stupid is? Not one repub voted for Brandon’s bills that Lerxst is going on about yet every repub went home to their districts and claimed credit for it, bills where the spending overwhelmingly went to red states/districts. Stupid can’t be fixed.
Time to lay the responsibility where it belongs, on the heads and shoulders of stupid who voted for what we have now. Give it another 6 months to a year and they might awaken from their stupor but I’m not hopeful. It’s too late. Scare messages work better than actually stating what you're going to do to make things better.
The exception is probably the message that our republic itself is in jeopardy, which people just don't want to believe or have been conditioned to believe isn't possible because of a 250-year-old document. They're eating the cats, your kids are peeing in litterboxes, an immigrant is going to kill in in a drunk driving wreck, the streets are dangerous, etc. all resonate better than the actual danger. Part of it is that the GOP is just better at this stuff but scaring people about things they think could happen tomorrow resonates much better than scaring them about something that could be years off.1995 Milwaukee 1998 Alpine, Alpine 2003 Albany, Boston, Boston, Boston 2004 Boston, Boston 2006 Hartford, St. Paul (Petty), St. Paul (Petty) 2011 Alpine, Alpine
