On the upside, polling wise, a majority don't blame the Dems for this.

This is really insane. I wonder what individual got onto Trump about this issue?? One of the Christian nationalists, or just someone who thought this up to give a boost to Christian nationalist approval ratings during the shutdown?

They aren't testing nuclear explosions so I don't expect us to start doing something so reckless.
I had an interesting conversation with my uncle about this over the weekend.
He lived in Vegas and worked for the nuclear testing sites. He wasn't a scientists, I'm not exactly sure what he did. I know the workers would park in an isolated lot, then be bussed into the location together an hour away or something. Thats about all I knew.
He's 89 now, and had to retire a few years earlier than planned when they shut it down.
He was saying there are very few people left who know how those tests were performed, and pretty much no one of working age. When they closed down the tests they created a bunch of top secret manuscripts of how to perform them and sealed them in a vault.
Going back to testing explosions now would almost be like starting all over as no one has used the equipment or done anything with it in over 30 years. No one with real life experience would be around to help conduct anything.
It would take years to get testing back on track, as it takes years to develop each test. They would have several in development at a time, so they'd be testing an explosion every few months, but it takes a few years for each one.
He thinks we should go back to testing before all the knowledge is completely lost and thinks most likely these other countries are testing it without our knowledge.

I don't think it's a good look to tell countries like Iran they can't have any nukes or even test them, but then continue to do so ourselves. But it was pretty interesting hearing his perspective.

how do you test them without actually blowing a few up?
They run them through simulated programs actually.  Nobody has done a nuclear explosion in quite some time. Korea was the last to do so I believe.

That is very interesting.  I'm curious about how true that is though.  We were doing testing in the 90's which like you said was 30 years ago and to think that we would forget how to do it seems odd.

I will dig into this because it is very very interesting.

Only forgot because, like my uncle said, who is left that was around for the testing? They're all in their 70s and 80s or dead. I'm sure there is a lot of second hand knowledge passed along and computer simulations can give a lot of info, but as far as first hand experience on how to conduct a test, it's almost all gone. Some things actual experience is more valuable than what you read in a manuscript.

i am more pissed off that the house of representatives has been in session working for just 12 of the last 84 days. these people are still getting paid and have basically been on paid vacation for months. they are not in their district holding town halls or meeting with constituents (looking at you, republics). the dems are mostly still in dc. the senate is working and trying to pass bills that the house will not take up. it is beyond frustrating when the people that are supposed to work for me are working for themselves, or doing absolutely nothing and still getting their $170k salary and full benefits.

the gop could end this today if they wanted to, but they have to have someone to blame during the next election cycle. blaming dems is the only way they can win since their positions are unpopular with the people.

$170k doesn’t buy what it used to.

Rs don’t want to fund healthcare. Period. Didn’t we want Dems to fight? Well…this is a fight. Are Dems doing a good job communicating the cause of this fight? Based on commentary above, from those forgetting about this fight, especially those north of the border, probably not.

If only Dems knew how to communicate with a false narrative, doctored photos, misleading statements and false information. And had MSNBC, CNN, WaPo and the NYT amplify it along with some “Internet personalities” who used to post videos on YouTube of their flower picking and vegan dinner parties.

Planned changes to Social Security’s disability program could leave hundreds of thousands of older blue-collar workers ineligible for aid. These changes would fall disproportionately on some of President Trump’s most loyal supporters.
