Why is Ohana so behind the times?

Has anyone asked Eddie about this? Visiting this last fall and having a greeeeeeeeeeat time seeing Neil Young, I was very surprised by how dreadfully meat-focused the festival was. Barely anything vegetarian to choose from at all. It's easy to stand on stage and talking about whales and the ocean and showing a video about the planet with Pearl Jam music as the soundtrack, but Eddie and the festival doesn't walk the talk at all. It was quite a disgraceful sight.

Compare this to Sweden's most famous/mainstream music festival Way out West (where Neil Young also has cancelled a gig - so let's refer to it as a sister festival):

The festival is vegetarian and has been completely meat free and largely dairy free since 2012.
During 2019 year’s festival, the carbon footprint from an average meal was 0,38 kg CO2e, which is below WWF’s One Planet Plate recommendation of 0,5 kg CO2e. We also CO2e marked the menus at the festival so you could easily make a decision when you wanted to eat and drink. The meat and dairy industry accounts for 14,5% of the greenhouse gas emissions globally*, which exceeds the emissions from the transport sector (cars, boats, trains, planes, others). By becoming vegetarian we lowered our emissions by 40% – and 15% of the festival’s visitors say they eat more veggie food after they’ve been to Way Out West. Yay!

TLDR: Way out West Festival which is Sweden's most mainstream music festival and brings 70.000 people in, is all vegetarian.

Even "Sweden Rock" with 170.000 of these types of people have plenty of vegan and vegetarian options:

And today this popped up in my feed:

And where does this environmental-focused Eddie stand with his festival? A bunch of basic food trucks with pretty much nothing vegetarian and with seemingly no pro-active take on what is being served at the festival. because being pro-active about the planet means vegetarian options.

Let's all collectively just say: Yuck.
"Mostly I think that people react sensitively because they know you’ve got a point"

Well, Sweden is more Vegetarian (10%) than the US (4%). So thats probably why. A US festival selling more animal based products is just catering to the market's demands.

I flew 3500 miles to Ohana in 2021. Guess my carbon footprint was already bad enough that a plant based sandwich wouldn’t have changed much… Do the Swedish festivals ban entrance those that travel to Goteborg by plane?

Ohana does so much for the local community that I’m not sure it needs to change much at this point. Best thing for the environment would be to cancel the event.

It’s simple. What sells the most? If people bought more, there’d be more veggie/vegan options.
You’re going to a music festival in a beach. Idk how environmentally friendly any of that is. Humans next to oceans usually aren’t a good mix when it comes to pollution

The only thing surprising is that his post didn’t have a KISS reference.

Fun fact: the top Swedish vegetable is the Rutabaga. Maybe sneak a bag of those in with you . Just remember, watch out for the lack of street lights as you run home.

An entirely vegan menu at an American festival like the one in Sweden would be a tough sell, but there should be more options. I would bet that it wouldn't be too difficult to locate a few vegan only food trucks or vendors in Southern California. It could also be that the vegan businesses have tried it before, didn't get the amount of business that they needed to be profitable and decided not to do it again.

While I personally don't mind the options that were available, I was hoping there would be more vegan/vegetarian options to try as that's my preference these days and was very surprised there were not many presented given some of the points OP is making.

This was my first time at Ohana so I'm not sure if this is normal or the last festival was an exception.

Price of food and lines are a bigger issue than selection.

Truth. ^oddly agree. I'm an avid gardener and no kidding feel a little bad to cut lettuce and pull up roots. To pick and eat the fruit or vegetable as intended is not a big deal.

I eat meat and kind of starting to feel bad. It just tastes so good.

Just respect it all and the meat will have the last laugh as my arteries clog up.

    Love you all.

Plan to eat a couple hot dogs for lunch. There's no lettuce or vegetables harmed there.
Although the place I go hits it with a pickle and onions. And might have fries. Oh well. Fml

If Ohana was vegan you'd have a lot of broke vendors. More choices would be great, but then you also need nut-free and gluten-free options. Pleasing everyone can be tough. You can read any the threads on this board and see that in a minute.

The OP just likes to complain and nitpick every little thing he can about pretty much everything . He’s never happy and needs to voice it in every thread he can. It’s exhausting. Maybe it’s time to move on. Maybe he can start his own band and start his own festival and make it perfect for himself. Glass half full should be his band name.
