    President Trump's sweeping cuts to the U.S. government are hitting a crucial part of the financial system: the independent agency responsible for preventing future banking crises.

    The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC) is responsible for insuring consumer deposits against bank failures — and for preventing those failures in the first place.

    Since its creation 92 years ago, during a national panic that closed thousands of banks, the FDIC has performed some of the unglamorous but crucial work of ensuring financial stability. Its very existence reassures consumers and businesses that their money is safe, by insuring deposits of up to $250,000.

    And its employees closely monitor most of the United States' smaller banks — warning lenders if, for example, their debt levels are edging too high or if they're taking on too much risky business.

    The end goal of these examinations is to catch any problems before they snowball into a bank failure — or a wider banking crisis. In those worst-case scenarios, the FDIC is also responsible for taking over failed banks.

    It's taken a bit to gather my thoughts.

    I'm forward deployed at the tip of the spear in Guam. Every day my job is to solve material availability issues in one our most remote naval bases in the world in order to repair our forward deployed work horse submarine crews.

    I mentor Junior Supply Officers about being a bull dog of finding ways to YES in support of our mission and National Security in repairing submarines.

    I proudly lead my Sailors who are doing  the hard work of supporting not only our ship, but our tended submarines AND high priority requisitions around the world. I have the BEST Sailors.

    I also happen to be transgender.

    The past few days have been kind of shitty. My Sailors deserve my best and my best is what I can control. They expect to follow my example of Honor, Courage, and Commitment. They deserve my Integrity, my Character, my Discipline, and my Humility to be beyond reproach. 2/4
    We do not serve ourselves. We are called to a higher standard. Excellence is the expectation, not the exception. I've spent an entire nearly 20 year career getting people to look through my identity (whether that be LGB, woman, or transgender) and focus on my MERIT.

    Whatever comes next, know I will stand in the gap. May they never know the hardship I endure as they should not have to carry my burden. May they never see my commitment to the mission or them ever waver.

    While George W. Bush was president, the U.S. Coast Guard signed a contract to get administrative help from a company in Northern Virginia. It paid $144,000, and the contract was completed by June 30, 2005.

    Twenty years passed. Presidents came and went.

    Last week, Elon Musk’s restructuring team, called the Department of Government Efficiency or DOGE, said it had just canceled the long-dead Coast Guard contract — and in doing so, saved U.S. taxpayers $53.7 million.

    I have a client that used to be fairly high up in the Taxpayer Advocate's Office at the IRS. She said the DC office is just upside down. 

    They had them fire a ton of people last week and now they are scrambling to get a bunch of them back. Fucking insane to do this right in the middle of tax season.

    Italian employees at the NATO base in Aviano received a directive from Elon Musk's department to submit weekly work reports. As reported by the newspaper "Il Messaggero," they were asked to explain whether they are actually necessary. Trade unions are protesting.

    Trump wasted 2.5 billion gallons of California water for a photo op on his social media, let half a billion dollars in food spoil on docks and warehouses by abruptly cutting off funding for USAID, and wasted $200 million on an ad campaign at the Department of Homeland Security to thank himself “for closing the border.”
