    2 turkey breasts
    Ham
    Stuffing
    Mashed potatoes
    Sweet potatoes
    Yeast rolls
    Green beans and tomatoes
    Corn Casserole
    Pumpkin squares
    Pineapple upside down cake
    Peanut butter pie
Sour cream pecan streusel bundt cake
    Nap

    Happy Thanksgiving!

Nobody in your family likes dark meat?
    Nope, not a one.
If there is no dark meat involved, then how are you making gravy? What's your recipe?
A stick of butter in each turkey initially, so lots of amazing drippings, add turkey or chicken broth to the pan, thicken it up
and add more butter.  Because butter makes everything better.
I put carrot/celery/onion scraps in the turkey roasting pan with the neck, herbs and some chicken stock...butter under the skin and season

then strain the pan for the gravy...add a bit of white wine to deglaze and cook up the roux

    dog gets the heart/gizzard/liver

    he loves thanksgiving

I've cooked plenty of turkeys over the years. I've stuffed them with stuffing, onions, lemons, oranges, etc.

I've come to the conclusion that simpler is better. I just put a ton of butter under the skin, cover the entire bird with olive oil, salt and pepper and that's that.

we've never gone the stuffing route....my family always made dressing so we've all stuck with that

I miss Thanksgiving dinner. Probably the sides more than the Turkey. I was home for it about two years ago. It was my wife's first ever Thanksgiving dinner and she absolutely loved it.

The turkey is just a vessel for the sides. Every now and then the turkey is done well. But it is really about the sides.

One of my good friends moved to North Carolina thirty years ago. They do two turkeys- one traditional, one deep fried. He says the fried one is bones after dinner while the traditional one is barely touched.
I have never tried it. I get scared by all the roof fire videos. And yes to the dark meat. It is the best part. I will be cooking all day tomorrow, and loving every minute of it. I hope the weather holds out. I would like to use the grill.

Hope you all enjoy time off from work, relaxing and having good eats. The green bean casserole is not vile, in the same way meatloaf is not vile. Its American tradition. And I do seem to recall a broccoli cheddar casserole at some point. It was good.

The roof fire videos are wild. Every Friday after Thanksgiving, I have to turn on the early morning news. So I can see video of the poor folks who set their house on fire, cooking a fucking turkey.

I'm sure it's very good but to me the hassle of deep frying just isn't worth it. I would be all for standing around a fryer drinking beer at someone else's place but I'm sure as fuck not doing it.

    Agreed 100%
The only time I have had deep fried was just that. My friend invited us over, we drank a bunch of booze and watched him do his thing. The bird was delicious!

We did a deep fried years back outside in my back yard as long as it’s not raining it’s safe at least 15 feet from the house, we’ve also done a turkey in paper bag that came out delicious!
My daughter is doing the turkey this year here at home she’s in charge of it!

haha. I actually admire the american tradition of thanksgiving. It's crazy to canadians that it's essentially bigger to you than christmas (as far as I've been told/see on tv haha).

Founders: we're going to have thankgiving on a thursday
everyone: but why on a thursday? shouldn't it be on the weekend so we don't have to work the next day?
founders: Thanksgiving shall be 4 days so everyone can get drunk and fight and then recover before returning to work.

Holidays have been tricky since my mom passed away a few years ago. I live with my brother, and he has zero interest in going to a relative's or a friend's, and would be anti-social if I decided to host.

I don't leave him alone for Christmas, but Thanksgiving I have. I usually go to my aunt's, who has hosted our entire extended family for decades. She's not hosting this year because her back is jacked up, so her son is hosting instead, and he invited us, but we're going to diner here instead:

Took off Friday, heading to my best friend's to see my Goddaughters and surprise them with Hamilton tickets for their combined Birthday/Xmas present.

I looked at that. But I was able to put together a home cooked meal with all the fixings for $110. Just get together with family. The rest is gravy. And apple pie. And football. I guess the six hours I will spend cooking probably justifies that cost.
  • Every restaurant we looked at was $69-$89 per person. Then we found a well known steak/seafood restaurant offering the full Thanksgiving experience for $39 per person. Well that's where we are going. Hopefully it's a good choice. Then dessert and coffee at my house.

We battle with the restaurant question every year. But nothing cheap in these parts. My back will hurt, but screw it. I cook. I buy the pie.  Everything else from scratch.

Its true. If you cannot shut it down for two or three days and enjoy eating with friends and family, something is wrong. Cold turkey with mayo on whole wheat the Friday after is the best.

My first job out of college was with my uncle's insurance company. His office was directly above the end of the Macy's parade in NYC. Every year, he'd invite the agents, the underwriters, and some clients for breakfast, and we'd watch the parade out the window. I'd be drunk and full by 10AM lol, and then I'd go to my aunt's and get more drunk and fuller.

And I had off maybe 9 or 10 Black Fridays in a row at one point, across multiple jobs. That was MY day. When the vacation calendar came out in January, it was understood that I was gonna be off.

    The halcyon days...
