Thanksgiving

We are going to a restaurant, and I'm not to happy about it. After dinner her family is coming over for dessert. So to protest the restaurant situation, instead of making 3 pies, I ordered 3 pies from Bakers Square.

What's everyone else doing Thursday, and what's on the menu?

Got a turkey from work, dry salt brine in fridge now. Spatchcocked it. Will do on the grill. Came out good last year. Have done brussel sprouts, mashed potatoes, stuffing. Maybe some carrots if my garden wants to give a few up. Time with a couple people and animals i love the most. Will be a nice quiet day.
    Enjoy it!
I'm sure you don't take it for granted. I'm reminding myself not to. ❤️

Flattened it out a bit. Remove backbone. Cooks faster and maybe a bit better imo.

    "Thanksgiving Day"

So many years down on my luck I don't know
Wondering how much lower I could go
Sometimes it's hard to make sense of it all
Searching for an easy place where I could fall

So many years I was lost I don't know
So many miles and nothing left to show
Dangling my toes across the precipice of sin
If there is a heaven will they ever let me in?

Thank you for the good times
    Thank you for the bad
Thank you for everything we never had
Can I stay here with you on Thanksgiving Day?

So many times on my own I don't know
So many gardens left for me to sow
Tossed the blame like seeds across a barren field
Scars upon my life just barely concealed

Thank you for the good times
    Thank you for the bad
Thank you for everything we could've had
Can I stay here with you on Thanksgiving Day?

Tossed the blame like seeds across a barren field
Scars upon my life just barely concealed
Thank you for the good times
    Thank you for the bad
Thank you for everything we could've had
The wonder of a sunrise the mystery of it all
The way the lovers kiss as the rain begins to fall
Shadows cast at dusk up against the kitchen wall
Can I stay here with you on Thanksgiving Day?

I am struggling with it. The family really does not care and told me to order in. But I cannot spend a Thanksgiving without the Macy's parade, a turkey, football on TV, and Alice's Restaurant playing on repeat. I was going to do the turkey spatchcocked on the grill, but it looks like wind and rain. We shall see.

Indeed it does. I do a wet brine overnight and then a dry rub. I hope the weather is ok up here in NY to use the grill.

I've done the Thanksgiving restaurant many times. But only because we often do it on Friday to accommodate work schedules or traveling, so we go out on Thanksgiving day. It's literally 1/4 the cost to fly on Thanksgiving or Christmas Day. My dad always had to work Thursday but got Friday off growing up, so we have been used to doing that for along time. And now we start the advent calendar a couple days early so we have "Christmas" around the 23rd and fly to wherever we're going on the 25th.  I agree though, it would be weird not having the main meal at home. It doesn't matter to me if it's Thursday or Friday, but I want it at home with family.
This year we're doing it on Friday again due to travel and work schedules.
I wish there was a way to do Halloween on November 1, so I can get all the half off candy to pass out. Haven't figured that one out yet though.

Well I went out in the mud and pouring rain and bought the bird, an apple sage brine mix, and an apple pie. To be continued. Only 5 of us this year. Trying to keep it simple. Sides will be stuffing and whatever is left at the grocery store.

Will be at my in-laws on Thursday, which somehow is way more work for my wife and I than if we just hosted. Other than turkey I don't really know what's on the menu, but it's probably normal sides and desserts.

A little ticked off my family isn't getting together. Long story short, it's my stepsisters' fault and my mom isn't too happy about it.

This year I'm very meh about Thanksgiving, which is unfortunate because it's my favorite holiday. At least my son isn't old enough to where he will remember this one.

Pretty traditional this year for us. Our first grandbaby is one month old. Only 11 of us so not a huge get together.

    Turkey
    Dressing
    Mashed potatoes and gravy
    Roasting sweet pots, carrots, beets
My daughter was wanting to make mac & cheese but trying to get her to push that to Fri/Sat lol
Trying to resist the green bean casserole this year

I’m leaving for my parent’s house tomorrow. There will be 11 of us - just immediate family. My mom has been cooking for days. She is the best cook so I am really looking forward to it. I will help her make the last few items when I get in. Photos to follow.

Do not fight the green bean casserole. It is the one thing my kids always request for Thanksgiving. Campbell's, French's and a few beans. I could make nothing else and they would be happy.

I miss Thanksgiving dinner. Probably the sides more than the Turkey. I was home for it about two years ago. It was my wife's first ever Thanksgiving dinner and she absolutely loved it.

We go to my sister's house.
Basic traditional meal for the most part

Turkey (fresh kill I get from work)
    Gravy,
    Mashed Potatoes
    Stuffing
    Peas
    Candied Yams
    Dinner Rolls
And my brother-in-law makes the vilest broccoli casserole and generally he's the only one who eats any of it.

A couple of pies and such for dessert, always including chocolate cream pie.

The turkey is just a vessel for the sides. Every now and then the turkey is done well. But it is really about the sides.

It is simple and good. It is the first leftover that disappears.

It's similar to the vile green been casserole.

I believe it cosmists of broccoli, cream of mushroom soup and cheese. Looks like vomit in a casserole.

One of my good friends moved to North Carolina thirty years ago. They do two turkeys- one traditional, one deep fried. He says the fried one is bones after dinner while the traditional one is barely touched.

I would be ok with that situation. An entire bird to use for leftovers? That would be fantastic.

A stick of butter in each turkey initially, so lots of amazing drippings, add turkey or chicken broth to the pan, thicken it up
and add more butter.  Because butter makes everything better.
