Consumers’ expectations fell but remained above the threshold that usually signals a recession ahead, the Conference Board said. PHOTO: BRANDON BELL/GETTY IMAGES
Confidence among U.S. consumers weakened for a second-straight month, reflecting retreating optimism of both current and future conditions at the start of President Trump’s second term and expectations that inflation will rise again.
The index of consumer sentiment published by the Conference Board, a research group, fell 5.4 points to 104.1, it said Tuesday, worse than the 106.0 expected by economists polled by The Wall Street Journal.
The index measuring consumers’ expectations—based on their short-term outlook for income, business and labor-market conditions—fell but remained above the threshold that usually signals a recession ahead, the Conference Board said. Indeed, the proportion of consumers anticipating a recession over the next 12 months was stable near the series low, it noted.
“Consumer confidence has been moving sideways in a relatively stable, narrow range since 2022. January was no exception,” said Dana M. Peterson, chief economist at the Conference Board.
However, all five components used to compile the index declined on the month, with consumers’ assessments of their present situation leading the fall, and pessimism about future employment prospects returning. The fall in sentiment was led by consumers under 55 years old; those above 55 registered a small uptick in confidence, according to the data.
The result shows consumers cautious about their future situation at the start of the new Trump administration. The cutoff date for the survey was Jan. 20, the date of Trump’s inauguration.
Ahead of the Federal Reserve meeting this week, average year-ahead inflation expectations increased to 5.3% in January from 5.1% in December, according to the survey.
Still, consumers notably remained bullish about the stock market, though slightly less than at the end of 2024. More than half of consumers expected stock prices to increase over the year ahead, Peterson said.
This is just the beginning. 45/47 fully intends to wreck havoc on the economy, weaken the poor and middle class, and make the super rich even more wealthy. The shit-show is still in the early seconds of the game.
But hey, America asked for this. Way to go!

It’s total chaos already. Cutting Medicare payments, cutting federal loans and grants, school lunches, it affects Americans immediately. I feel really bad for those that didn’t vote for him. For those that did, now you know.

I'm not sure very many of those who voted for him know what their in for yet. A lot of them still think this whole mess is some kind of glorious transition via a blessed revolution. More like a gory transfusion of a blustery revulsion. But give them time. They will feel it (sadly, along with the rest of us who already know).

My wife works in education for our county. She deals with parents in getting their special needs kids placed in the appropriate classrooms. They were concerned today, and still are, that Trump's funding freeze my affect them in some way.
In cases like this, with so much uncertainty flying around, even if it ends up not affecting them, just the thought of potentially being laid off or furloughed or whatever weighs on people. It adds unnecessary stress to many people's lives.

Make sure that cross is visible. Fucking stupid has won.
Leavitt appeared wearing a purple jacket and a gold cross, of a size commonly associated with the warding off of vampires. She revealed several helpful nuggets, including that “President Trump has always been the hardest-working man in politics,” that “the golden age of America has most definitely begun” and that Europe has “no greater ally” than Trump. She also disclosed the “news” that Trump had determined that those drones in New Jersey were hobbyist and commercial aircraft and “not the enemy” — precisely the same news that the Biden administration announced on Dec. 17. She volunteered her view that all undocumented immigrants “are criminals” and, asked about Black History Month, said “we will continue to celebrate … the contributions that all Americans, regardless of race,” have made.

Back in my youth in the 80’s, I always envisioned 2025 as some futuristic utopia where people weren’t so fucking stupid as to be fooled by fascists anymore. And that we could move forward as a species instead of arguing over the shape of the planet.
2025 is stupider than the 1993 was angry.

All the Medicare portals across all the states seem to be closed down for now… Or maybe that changed after the court delayed this crap.m
As heartless and mean as these people are, I honestly think it’s the incompetence that made this escalate this quickly. I have a generally believe they tripped over their own feet and causing this much pain as quickly.
That all said the intentional part is having Trump do illegal things that the courts will back him for because they are loyal to him and his party. Checks and balances are done. It’s over.

To me trump is the strongest argument for term limits. We're in this situation where his party has collapsed in fealty because they are too worried about getting primaried and losing their cushy gov't salary/benefits.
Imagine how different things would be if a Senator could only serve one term. No need to bow to a moron like trump if you don't have to worry about fundraising or winning your seat again.

Good point. As much as this whole disaster is a GOP creation, if you didn’t have some feckless opposition party pushing centrist legacies into perpetual roles in Congress, people might actually get a chance to select some folks that would take on what’s happening with the attention it deserves. And, as you point out, they wouldn’t be doing it for a cushy government job for life. It’s probably too late now, but it does seem to be something that people from all over the spectrum agree upon… Lifetime appointments in Congress are not good.

Is RFK, Jr. okay? Guy sounds like he’s about to drop dead. He doesn’t sound healthy at all. But sure, let’s put an anti vaxxer in charge of our health care system.
With trump shutting down all these agencies and freezing funding all down the line, which I believe is the beginning of his effort to consolidate his power, I’m starting to wonder if the end game here is to basically strong arm 2/3 of congress into overturning the 22nd amendment. “You vote my way, you get (insert resource)”.
