As alluded to earlier by Speedy, expectations were high for Cincy 2006 after 2003 was cancelled.  The main set started off great at that show too and then it became normal.

My expectations were high at the second 2003 Camden show.   Ed said before the encore that they were going to play a lot of requests.  Sweet?  And then the encore was:

Jeremy, Small Town, Better Man, Daughter, Alive.  Ha.

Lightning Bolt! Been wondering where it’s been
Where’s Lightning bolt been?  I was hoping they left it in 2013-2018 when they spent five years touring the same record.
I like Lightning Bolt every now and then. In this regard it is interesting that they played so much Gigaton, I guess rightfully so, from 21-23 and now, poof, nowhere to be found. I know there is only so much to fit in with all the Dark Matter and overall it wasn't well received by the fans but it's funny that they played it so much and now not at all.

Of course it is hard to disagree as those are great songs.  It was my 10th show that tour and I was chasing songs at that point.

I was still in college.  When they announced Boston III awesomeness, I got in the car the night before and drove to Boston last minute (about 14 hours I think).  Had to ditch the car as transmission was having issues when I got there.  Had to take the bus home.  My parents were ticked "how many shows will be enough?"

As someone who was in line for merch last year when the cancelation tweet hit, and as someone who went back and forth about flying back to Indy with my family AGAIN in 2024, I agree.  I kept thinking if we go, this show is going to be awesome as they know they “owe” Indy a banger.  But this was one of the weaker setlists of the entire tour so far (festivals aside).  When Spin the Black and Lightning Bolt are your deep cuts…

It was a pretty mid setlist.  I’m sure they sounded awesome and everyone had a great time. So happy for those who got our hopes crushed last September who got to see them!  You earned it.

Well, those sound like the songs that the average Pearl Jam fan would request. It makes me think of when I see Jeff Tweedy and people shout out "California Stars" and "Jesus, etc."-- as if there's any chance he won't be playing those songs. I imagine them telling all their friends, "OMG! Jeff Tweedy played my request!" without realizing that he plays it virtually every night.
I gather speed from you fucking with me.

I'll keep seeing shows as long as they tour places that are new to me. Otherwise I'll be content with a couple shows a year.  Awesome shows, but the anticipation of they could play anything was a lot of the fun (and the fact they did play anything).  Now, 18 of 23 songs are predictable from about a song list of 50.   And then the other 50 they sprinkle in are covers, or deep cuts like Dissident and Animal.

Not complaining.  Different era for the band.

Tonight's performance of "Lightning Bolt" notwithstanding, what I don't like about these setlists is that, aside from Dark Matter tracks, the entire rest of the set could have been played in 1998. It's 2024. Tonight's set included exactly two Pearl Jam songs from the 27-year period from 1997 through 2023.
I gather speed from you fucking with me.

P.S. thanks for following along. I'm no Dimi, but I always love reading these, so I don't mind making them (fast & loose!)

Shameless plug: I'm going to Wrigley for the 1st time! Shows #24 & #25 for me. Bringing my buddy who's NEVER seen the boys live (and it's his 2nd favorite band!)

We've moved & shaked to the following pairs, but we are always looking to upgrade:

N1 - Field M, Row 23 (back row, easy access)
N2 - Field AB, Row 1 (front, but in the back)😅

If anyone's got a bead on closer seats, or GA, hit me up! And I'll make sure someone on here gets these in return🤘

Have a good night, drive safe, and see you in Sweet Home Chicago😎

Wanted Posters: WPB '98, Tampa/WPB '00, Tampa '03, EV Batmobile '08        ISO: any picks, or setlists from any of my shows!
  • I'm kind of over the setlist thing. I've never been a song chaser by any means, but definitely love the unknown of what they are going to play.

Early in this tour it did bother me and with six shows I definitely debated going to all of them. But they are Vegas, Chicago and Ohana so sort of hard to hate going to any of those places. That said I did do a lot of back and forth on Chicago. Vegas was too early in the run and my only sort of likes music wife just loves Ohana, so it was sort of the one to wrestle with on time and money. But I made the choice to go and honestly can't wait. I know I might not be blown away, but I suppose who knows.

Of course even if the catalog has shrunk the sets are still mostly different each night and that is still a surprise. It is also still Pearl Jam and I know we all wonder how much more we'll get. I look at the last two shows and I think tonight's was way better, but I doubt I'd turn down being at either if I could.

Maybe this is the new Pearl Jam, and we'll all debate how many we do next time, or maybe it will change back once Dark Matter cools some. But it's still pretty great to follow along and even better to be there.
