Anyone watching the opening ceremony? Pretty cool with the athletes on the boats and in the rain.

I thought that was cool as well, but I found the rest of the ceremony quite boring, I thought the Lady Gaga performance was HORRIBLE. And I think she is fantastic.   And that image of a beheaded Marie Antoinette was just disturbing.  I know Europe has a much longer history than the US.  I don't claim to know all of it.  France was trying to orchestrate their history and for me it just didn't work.  I have to acknowledge a beheaded Marie Antoinette is part of France' history but to include that image in the opening Olympic ceremony just seemed wrong.  Just my opinion.

I was wondering why they had Raf Nadel from Spain take the torch so I googled “famous french athletes” and the first site I checked had Andre The Giant at #4 all-time … so I guess picking him made sense in hindsight

I’m amazed that NBC got Peyton Manning and Dottie from Pee Wee’s Big Adventure to do color commentary…

Nadal has won the Roland Garros tournament 14 times so he is almost at home in Paris and the french public loves him.
I understand about Gaga but this song is very difficult to sing and she would have desserved a better venue for her performance. And she sang in french.
It was a great show for me (lots of positive comments in France but maybe difficult for outsiders to have all the references. I hope your commenters on TV have all the information to explain)

Wild move by the Olympics to commit what about 2.4 billion people consider blasphemy in the opening ceremony.  That shouldn’t hurt NBC’s ratings … but don’t be surprised when your Peacock subscription goes up a few bucks next month to cover the losses.

I saw some of my FB "friends" posting about boycotting the Olympics due to the supposed diss of the last supper.

I mean really? Whatever committee was responsible for that piece means you won't watch the USA participate? Fuck off.

It WAS NOT the last supper.  It was Dionysius.  The Greek god of wine and fertility or celebration.  They were paying homage to the Greeks here but yeah, f the Olympics, lol!

Gorija playing the opener, being a metal band.... Awesome!

This was what they were interpreting.  A 17th century painting by Biljert.

I am afraid we crossed that bridge a while back. Critical thinking is in critical condition for a big chunk of the world, it is sad and frustrating.

I will admit we are a knee jerk reactionary society now.  Everything is done in a split second of a tweet and having to break the story first.  I would not have thought this as mockery of Christianity though.  It had to go through dress rehearsals and committees.  You think they'd want to piss off that many people, lol?
